ok, comparing roger waters to salinger is taking things a little far

on the other hand, i'm not sure why a 36-year-old rock star should be expected to show the wisdom and maturity of an adult, or why it's a particular knock against him that he's not "mature". this is one of his great strengths as a lyricist. david gilmour "matured" and his lyrics are boring as hell.

The album is about a mid-life crisis, surely? Pink recalls childhood but also recalls his failed marriage and musical career.

Not having an opinion about Pink Floyd at all would be kind of controversial.

Like, I don't know that I find the pov likeable but it does strike me as the perspective of a middle-aged (or close) person. I listened to it most when I was 14 but I think that's more because the sweeping narrative and melodrama seemed most interesting then (or maybe just because I had fewer albums and it was new to me), not because I related to it as such. xp

arrested emotional development or mid-life crisis? maybe one leads to the other?

I think The Who's Quadrophenia (film) seems to deal with, but from the fan's point of view instead of the artist's.

But I mean, that IS the wisdom and maturity of a man in his 30s, a broken and damaged man in his 30s for sure, but certainly the concerns of an adult man.≈

The lyrics of Roger Waters are of no interest to me tbh.

I wasn't gonna get in on this but I gotta say in general I find the anodyne, affectless Floyd vocals a v positive feature rather than a bug

i'm increasingly convinced overplay shouldn't affect how you evaluate music but wish you were here is really hard to hear bc of how every song is a classic rock radio staple except "cigar" and the second "shine on"

Maybe I'll relisten to all of Pink Floyd this week. It's been like a decade since I heard most of these albums.

“Crazy Diamond” is good!

I could give a “toss” about the lyrics on Pink Floyd songs, I’ve just generally always enjoyed their sound.

I’ve also always had a bit of trouble figuring out which Pink Floyd dude is singing but I find the vocals always to be good and sometimes great.

boring personal anecdote

in the fall of '89, me and a group of friends, all of us 8th graders, travelled from Wichita, KS to OKC to catch R.E.M. on their Green tour. On the way back, up I-35 in the wee hours, once everyone had talked themselves out and were drifting off, our chaperones put "The Delicate Sound of Thunder" in the CD player of the van. I was only passingly familiar with and of the songs, but the #mood was just overwhelming, and it remains one of the most blissed-out listening experiences of my life. I asked Mrs Brown what CD this was and ponied up for it the next day.

gilmour has a smooth but limited range and waters sounds like he's actively expiring, is the main difference

I like the lyrics to Shine On Your Crazy Diamond. It's all bound up with the story of Syd appearing in the studio. I find the whole package kind of overwhelming.

I can definitely tell it's Waters when he's in his "i am dying" vocal mode but when he tones it down it's a little difficult to tell the difference and he's a bit more to my liking.

Oh, I actually like the histrionic proto-Arcade Fire vox on Wall stuff like "One of My Turns"/"Don't Leave Me Now". I'd probably like more of that.

Yeah. Like a lot of people, my first Floyd album was The Dark Side of the Moon, and when I think about it Gilmour is pretty much the dominant lead singer on that album. Rick Wright sings parts of 'Time' ("tired of lying in the sunshine" etc.) and does a lot of singing in harmony with Gilmour. Roger doesn't appear as lead vocalist until right at the end of the album on 'Brain Damage/Eclipse' and it's a more reserved version of the Waters Experience that surfaces there - more laid back, in his lower register.

The next Floyd I heard was Animals which is pretty much dominated by Waters in "howl of pain" mode.

Animals doesn't really make sense until you sync it up with Meet Me In St. Louis

Same here, yet I get impatient when friends have the same problem distinguishing Ben Orr and Ric Ocasek; they sound so obv different.

Orr and Ocasek ARE v different, though!

I feel like there are many vocalists who have a greater range than Waters to Gilmour all by themselves so it isn't really weird to not be able to differentiate them. In retrospect I'm not sure why, but for years (pre-internet, I guess) I assumed Gilmour sang pretty much everything.

Ha, I just realized I mixed them up on "Good Times Roll". xp
