I always think of The Wall as an album for moody teenagers. I keep having to remind myself that it was mostly written by a man who was 36 when it was released.

"I always think of The Wall as an album for moody teenagers. I keep having to remind myself that it was mostly written by a man who was 36 when it was released."

Why would you keep reminding yourself of that?

Isn't he just writing from a younger person's perspective, like 30-something Salinger writing "Catcher In The Rye"?

Anyway not controversial to love or hate Pink Floyd. Sometimes people even flip-flop

PINK FLOYD RULES!

I Love Music.

ok, comparing roger waters to salinger is taking things a little far

on the other hand, i'm not sure why a 36-year-old rock star should be expected to show the wisdom and maturity of an adult, or why it's a particular knock against him that he's not "mature". this is one of his great strengths as a lyricist. david gilmour "matured" and his lyrics are boring as hell.

Sigur Ros or Pomplamoose type shit (rushomancy), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 14:32 (seven years ago)

The album is about a mid-life crisis, surely? Pink recalls childhood but also recalls his failed marriage and musical career.

Locked in silent monologue, in silent scream (Sund4r), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 14:36 (seven years ago)

Not having an opinion about Pink Floyd at all would be kind of controversial.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 14:47 (seven years ago)

Like, I don't know that I find the pov likeable but it does strike me as the perspective of a middle-aged (or close) person. I listened to it most when I was 14 but I think that's more because the sweeping narrative and melodrama seemed most interesting then (or maybe just because I had fewer albums and it was new to me), not because I related to it as such. xp

Locked in silent monologue, in silent scream (Sund4r), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 14:58 (seven years ago)

arrested emotional development or mid-life crisis? maybe one leads to the other?

I think The Who's Quadrophenia (film) seems to deal with, but from the fan's point of view instead of the artist's.

nicky lo-fi, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 15:50 (seven years ago)

But I mean, that IS the wisdom and maturity of a man in his 30s, a broken and damaged man in his 30s for sure, but certainly the concerns of an adult man.≈

Locked in silent monologue, in silent scream (Sund4r), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 16:25 (seven years ago)

The lyrics of Roger Waters are of no interest to me tbh.

"Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is cringe

rip van wanko, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 16:48 (seven years ago)

I wasn't gonna get in on this but I gotta say in general I find the anodyne, affectless Floyd vocals a v positive feature rather than a bug

moaty, boaty, big and bloaty (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 16:49 (seven years ago)

"Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is cringe

Yeah, those lyrics have not aged well

jmm, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:01 (seven years ago)

i'm increasingly convinced overplay shouldn't affect how you evaluate music but wish you were here is really hard to hear bc of how every song is a classic rock radio staple except "cigar" and the second "shine on"

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:02 (seven years ago)

i still love and am discovering new things about animals however

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:03 (seven years ago)

which really harbors the worst vibes

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:05 (seven years ago)

Maybe I'll relisten to all of Pink Floyd this week. It's been like a decade since I heard most of these albums.

jmm, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:05 (seven years ago)

“Crazy Diamond” is good!

i stan corrected (morrisp), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:09 (seven years ago)

I could give a “toss” about the lyrics on Pink Floyd songs, I’ve just generally always enjoyed their sound.

omar little, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:21 (seven years ago)

I’ve also always had a bit of trouble figuring out which Pink Floyd dude is singing but I find the vocals always to be good and sometimes great.

omar little, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:24 (seven years ago)

boring personal anecdote

in the fall of '89, me and a group of friends, all of us 8th graders, travelled from Wichita, KS to OKC to catch R.E.M. on their Green tour. On the way back, up I-35 in the wee hours, once everyone had talked themselves out and were drifting off, our chaperones put "The Delicate Sound of Thunder" in the CD player of the van. I was only passingly familiar with and of the songs, but the #mood was just overwhelming, and it remains one of the most blissed-out listening experiences of my life. I asked Mrs Brown what CD this was and ponied up for it the next day.

GarugBand (rip van wanko), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:29 (seven years ago)

gilmour has a smooth but limited range and waters sounds like he's actively expiring, is the main difference

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:31 (seven years ago)

xp Great story (for real)!

i stan corrected (morrisp), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:31 (seven years ago)

GarugBand (rip van wanko), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:32 (seven years ago)

for the record i like both too but the first time i heard the wall after dark side i was like "who's this hysterical asshole who can't sing"

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:32 (seven years ago)

(and fwiw that REM show was absolute fire)

GarugBand (rip van wanko), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:36 (seven years ago)

Yeah I guess it's Gilmour's voice I like

moaty, boaty, big and bloaty (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:39 (seven years ago)

I like the lyrics to Shine On Your Crazy Diamond. It's all bound up with the story of Syd appearing in the studio. I find the whole package kind of overwhelming.

xp *You Crazy Diamond, obviously.

Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:43 (seven years ago)

I can definitely tell it's Waters when he's in his "i am dying" vocal mode but when he tones it down it's a little difficult to tell the difference and he's a bit more to my liking.

omar little, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:43 (seven years ago)

Oh, I actually like the histrionic proto-Arcade Fire vox on Wall stuff like "One of My Turns"/"Don't Leave Me Now". I'd probably like more of that.

Locked in silent monologue, in silent scream (Sund4r), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:56 (seven years ago)

Lol at his pitch, listening to the latter now.

Locked in silent monologue, in silent scream (Sund4r), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:57 (seven years ago)

"who's this hysterical asshole who can't sing"

LOL, accurate.

def true, took me a while to figure out he was singing "brain damage"

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 18:09 (seven years ago)

Yeah. Like a lot of people, my first Floyd album was The Dark Side of the Moon, and when I think about it Gilmour is pretty much the dominant lead singer on that album. Rick Wright sings parts of 'Time' ("tired of lying in the sunshine" etc.) and does a lot of singing in harmony with Gilmour. Roger doesn't appear as lead vocalist until right at the end of the album on 'Brain Damage/Eclipse' and it's a more reserved version of the Waters Experience that surfaces there - more laid back, in his lower register.

The next Floyd I heard was Animals which is pretty much dominated by Waters in "howl of pain" mode.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 18:12 (seven years ago)

Animals doesn't really make sense until you sync it up with Meet Me In St. Louis

Rhine Jive Click Bait (Hadrian VIII), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 18:18 (seven years ago)

I thought it was just me who had hard time telling them apart, cause I do that a lot.
So wait, who sings on Comfortably Numb? I like that delivery
