RE: Post-Waters Floyd, I saw parts of the video for "High Hopes" last week (in the context of a Beavis and Butthead episode, lol) and the inanely "trippy" visuals actually made me angry

There's good stuff from every era before Waters left

a formidable songwriter nonetheless

David Gilmour's songs on The Wall > "Echoes" > Dark Side Of The Moon with "Money" ignored > flashes of brilliance here and there from all eras >>> albums that are considered "classics" but are completely worthless if you pay attention to Roger Waters' peak-terrible lyrics (Wish You Were Here, Animals, all his parts on The Wall)
― flamboyant goon tie included, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 00:09 (seven years ago)
I really do think the more Gilmour-y Wall songs are this band's finest moments ("Comfortably Numb", "Hey You", "Run Like Hell", "Goodbye Blue Sky"; hard pass on that "I need a dirty woman" song though)
― flamboyant goon tie included, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 00:11 (seven years ago)
Since we're on FLOYD RULES... BUT... "Echoes" is a nice 3-4 minute psychedelic pop/rock song pointlessly and redundantly padded out to 20-odd minutes.
― Never Turn Your Back On Virginia Woolf (Tom D.), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 00:14 (seven years ago)
Actually controversial take: I find both Gilmour and Waters fairly unengaging as vocalists, to the point that I often struggle to identify which one of them is singing by ear, and prefer the vocalists from just about every other major prog band.

Waters has the worse voice of the two, particularly when he tries to belt it out. The guy from the Arcade Fire has a similar "quality" to his voice when he tries to do the same. Rick Wright was the best singer in the band.

You are all grebt and I value everyone's contributions. But I will go to my grave thinking that "Cornftably Numb" probably represents the pinnacle of my ilx career. In fact I may just stop posting now.

I always think of The Wall as an album for moody teenagers. I keep having to remind myself that it was mostly written by a man who was 36 when it was released.

"I always think of The Wall as an album for moody teenagers. I keep having to remind myself that it was mostly written by a man who was 36 when it was released."
Why would you keep reminding yourself of that?
Isn't he just writing from a younger person's perspective, like 30-something Salinger writing "Catcher In The Rye"?

Anyway not controversial to love or hate Pink Floyd. Sometimes people even flip-flop

ok, comparing roger waters to salinger is taking things a little far
on the other hand, i'm not sure why a 36-year-old rock star should be expected to show the wisdom and maturity of an adult, or why it's a particular knock against him that he's not "mature". this is one of his great strengths as a lyricist. david gilmour "matured" and his lyrics are boring as hell.
― Sigur Ros or Pomplamoose type shit (rushomancy), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 14:32 (seven years ago)
The album is about a mid-life crisis, surely? Pink recalls childhood but also recalls his failed marriage and musical career.
― Locked in silent monologue, in silent scream (Sund4r), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 14:36 (seven years ago)
Not having an opinion about Pink Floyd at all would be kind of controversial.
― pomenitul, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 14:47 (seven years ago)
Like, I don't know that I find the pov likeable but it does strike me as the perspective of a middle-aged (or close) person. I listened to it most when I was 14 but I think that's more because the sweeping narrative and melodrama seemed most interesting then (or maybe just because I had fewer albums and it was new to me), not because I related to it as such. xp
― Locked in silent monologue, in silent scream (Sund4r), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 14:58 (seven years ago)
arrested emotional development or mid-life crisis? maybe one leads to the other?
I think The Who's Quadrophenia (film) seems to deal with, but from the fan's point of view instead of the artist's.
― nicky lo-fi, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 15:50 (seven years ago)
But I mean, that IS the wisdom and maturity of a man in his 30s, a broken and damaged man in his 30s for sure, but certainly the concerns of an adult man.≈
― Locked in silent monologue, in silent scream (Sund4r), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 16:25 (seven years ago)

I wasn't gonna get in on this but I gotta say in general I find the anodyne, affectless Floyd vocals a v positive feature rather than a bug

― jmm, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 17:01 (seven years ago)
i'm increasingly convinced overplay shouldn't affect how you evaluate music but wish you were here is really hard to hear bc of how every song is a classic rock radio staple except "cigar" and the second "shine on"

boring personal anecdote
in the fall of '89, me and a group of friends, all of us 8th graders, travelled from Wichita, KS to OKC to catch R.E.M. on their Green tour. On the way back, up I-35 in the wee hours, once everyone had talked themselves out and were drifting off, our chaperones put "The Delicate Sound of Thunder" in the CD player of the van. I was only passingly familiar with and of the songs, but the #mood was just overwhelming, and it remains one of the most blissed-out listening experiences of my life. I asked Mrs Brown what CD this was and ponied up for it the next day.
