Pink Floyd should have been eaten by wolves

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 14 January 2019 04:49 (seven years ago)

Oh stfu you boring cunt.

Never Turn Your Back On Virginia Woolf (Tom D.), Monday, 14 January 2019 09:13 (seven years ago)

Never forget this classic thread:

TS: Prince or Bowie?

Ok, just stumbled across this shit-encrusted gem and like wow. Excepting the period from about April to December 2016, any comparison between these two artists is just asinine. But if you must compare it's like this: Anyone who favors Bowie is worse than Donald Trump as a human being and ought to have their ears sliced off because they obviously aren't fucking working

the F word, the N word, raunchy sex, your name it (thewufs), Monday, 14 January 2019 10:20 (seven years ago)

^Intentional exaggeration btw. I like Bowie but give me a fucking break. If we can't convince twentysomethings and younger of Prince's greatness we will have failed as a species

the F word, the N word, raunchy sex, your name it (thewufs), Monday, 14 January 2019 10:23 (seven years ago)

Thread turned nasty.

PINK FLOYD RULES

pomenitul, Monday, 14 January 2019 10:28 (seven years ago)

Good: Prince, Bowie
Bad: Being angry with people for having different taste in music to you
Worst: Reading about slicing off people's ears first thing on a Monday

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 14 January 2019 10:28 (seven years ago)

If we can't convince twentysomethings and younger of Prince's greatness we will have failed as a species

First step: stop harming your own case by pretending he had more than a half dozen songs worth a shit after 1989.

grawlix (unperson), Monday, 14 January 2019 14:34 (seven years ago)

controp not all songs in 7/8 time are good

rip van wanko, Monday, 14 January 2019 14:41 (seven years ago)

How many great albums has Prince put out since the twentysomethings and younger were born

frogbs, Monday, 14 January 2019 14:59 (seven years ago)

really glad we don't do T/S thread anymore they were pretty pointless

Prince and Bowie are both the kind of artists for whom Greatest Hits comps make a whole lot of sense.

his albums from that era are inconsistent but Anthology: 1995-2010 is pretty damn good front to back

this is right on the edge but the truth, the bonus album he tacked onto crystal ball, is at the very least close to great

after that pretty much nothing though 3121 has a lot going for it

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Monday, 14 January 2019 16:06 (seven years ago)

gold experience and the love symbol album are two of his absolute greatest but '95 and '92 both feel too old for the question you're asking

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Monday, 14 January 2019 16:07 (seven years ago)

Most of Prince's songs are not very good

was merely pointing out that a song in 7 would seem by its very nature to disqualify it from accusations of being "bluesy garbage," which in this context I take to mean stock, trite, and predictable, but it's OK, I realize not everybody knows what they're talking about

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 14 January 2019 18:03 (seven years ago)

it has a blues feel and there are tons of blues songs with dropped beats

Going back in time now to convince John Rotten to write this instead of "I hate" on his Pink F t-shirt.

As you prove every time you post.

Never Turn Your Back On Virginia Woolf (Tom D.), Monday, 14 January 2019 18:32 (seven years ago)

I can't think of many blues tunes that keep a regular 7 feel tbf; also the obvious use of loops of 'found' samples is pretty distinct for the time. It's a long way from generic blues-rock.xp

Locked in silent monologue, in silent scream (Sund4r), Monday, 14 January 2019 18:33 (seven years ago)

A fair point if anyone had said it was either a blues song or generic blues rock.

Never Turn Your Back On Virginia Woolf (Tom D.), Monday, 14 January 2019 18:34 (seven years ago)

pink floyd are worthless crap pretty much down the line. maaaaaybe some of the syd era stuff is a bit less shit. though i still call that album "shiter at the gates of yawn"

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Monday, 14 January 2019 18:35 (seven years ago)

I will double down on the controversial opinion and say post 1985

Yeah if I had to choose between 'falsely proclaiming Pink Floyd to be my favourite band' or 'having them be pulled apart by wolves' then I'd stan for them and feed the wolves another more deserving band

I'm not a big fan by any stretch but I don't really hear Dark Side as that different from their other albums of that time.

Locked in silent monologue, in silent scream (Sund4r), Monday, 14 January 2019 19:02 (seven years ago)

Wish You Were Here > Meddle > Animals > Dark Side of the Moon > the live half of Ummagumma > The Wall > a bunch of shit I never need to hear again as long as I live > the even worse shit they did before they wised up and punted Syd Barrett

grawlix (unperson), Monday, 14 January 2019 19:05 (seven years ago)

Dark Side is the last one that I really dig.

jmm, Monday, 14 January 2019 19:06 (seven years ago)

I'm not a big fan of it but's better than "The Wall", forcryingoutloud.

Dark side is definitely better than wish you were here. I can't listen to Shine on you crazy diamond any more. Animals is great.

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Monday, 14 January 2019 19:59 (seven years ago)

every person I've ever known who is huge Floyd fan is dismissive of Dark Side. every person I've ever know who isn't huge Floyd fan loves Dark Side, maybe likes a bit other Floyd stuff to lesser degree, and can't stand most of the rest.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 14 January 2019 20:01 (seven years ago)

imo Dark Side is firmly upper-middle of the pack

resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 14 January 2019 20:07 (seven years ago)

That doesn't mean shit. Why should a fan know better about the best album than the others? Obviously fans tend to like the more far-out stuff just to differentiate themselves from the lot.

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Monday, 14 January 2019 20:07 (seven years ago)

I'm not sure that's so obvious...?

PINK FLOYD RULES

marcos, Monday, 14 January 2019 20:18 (seven years ago)

what do you mean by "doesn't mean shit"? I take it to mean something along the lines of what you said. Partly might be to "differentiate themselves", but I think some people just like 25 minute psych jams more than the like the tighter, more focused stuff on Dark Side.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 14 January 2019 20:23 (seven years ago)

Xp Isn't fandom also about delusion? I do not think that a fan is the most objective person to judge the output of the band he/she is fan of. Like the band itself actually. They usually have no clue which is their best work. If you ask them usually it is their last album, obviously also for promo reasons.

I thought you implied fans are better "judges".

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Monday, 14 January 2019 20:26 (seven years ago)

Granny and Alex are both right. YES, serious Floydians are generally gonna prefer something more obscure. YES, casual listeners are generally going to embrace what is popular and familiar.

All of this is human and normal and good.

There's no conflict between these assertions, as far as I can see.
