I like D.O.A. It's not so great lyrically, but nice No I.D sampling, as usual. It's a bit weird for a 40 year old dude to care so much...not sure whether it's just a Flex-pleasing excuse for a minor headline, or something more substantial.

so jay has his "get off my lawn" moment

yeah funnier still is this was produced by a dude who just recorded an entire album using autotune

http://soulbounce.com/soul/2009/06/jay-z_death_of_autotune.php

He isn't saying anything new. Initially I was all ready to jump on board with Jay-Z and his wacky "Death Of Auto-Tune" idea, but after actually hearing the track, in which he bemoans not only the use of "T-Paining it" but tight jeans and bright colors on a track co-produced by Kanye West, I can't help but wonder if this approach isn't just little passive-aggressive. Here you have a man that has no doubt benefited financially from many of his friends going the Auto-Tune route, and he opts to "kill" it on a song instead of just, I dunno, not using it or even referring to it at all.

This is a gimmick. Just like "Hip Hop is Dead." People have been over Auto-Tune for a while now, but I suppose if Jay-Z gets other rap artists to stop using it, he can just sit back and take credit for starting a movement or saving Hip-Hop or whatever. I beseech anyone reading this not to fall for that shit.

that fake tracklist was pretty hilarious, btw. "The Audacity Of Dope"!

amazingly someone used an even worse version of that idea in total seriousness:

i almost wish jay'd delay B3 another year so this thread can get even loopier and snarkier

Beatrix Kiddo, Tuesday, 7 July 2009 15:07 (sixteen years ago)

i wish he'd drop "Big Hat Club" already

tweedle dee and tweedle (some dude), Monday, 31 August 2009 20:06 (sixteen years ago)

no really!

stfuhut (k3vin k.), Monday, 31 August 2009 20:06 (sixteen years ago)

ok...i like a couple of the Tim songs but people in general seemed to be pretty negative on all of them.

tweedle dee and tweedle (some dude), Monday, 31 August 2009 20:12 (sixteen years ago)

i don't know if i have the heart to listen to this.

Thought you were regal/Now who needs "Boston Legal"? (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 31 August 2009 20:18 (sixteen years ago)

i know right? i've basically had the same experience w/ this as with the last 2 Jay records, where i really want to find a leak of the whole thing to download, not so much cause i'm eager to hear it as that i don't want to feel any temptation to buy it on the release date and wanna just get my disappointment out of the way now.

tweedle dee and tweedle (some dude), Monday, 31 August 2009 20:21 (sixteen years ago)

i'm happy to report that most of what i've heard of this is at the very least "pretty darn good"

take it with a grain of salt - i loved american gangster

I'M IN MIAMI, TRICK-OR-TREAT (Beatrix Kiddo), Monday, 31 August 2009 20:39 (sixteen years ago)

The beat for Venus vs. Mars is kinda cool i suppose. The album is a total mess though.

Number None, Monday, 31 August 2009 21:29 (sixteen years ago)

An interesting mess?

do HOOS ever just steen into space and weep (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Monday, 31 August 2009 22:20 (sixteen years ago)

My opinion on what i've heard so far: At least it's conceivable U2 could have a big hat club.

i thought you were suggesting the album somehow sounded like u2 and i was so happily confused

do HOOS ever just steen into space and weep (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Monday, 31 August 2009 22:30 (sixteen years ago)

I think I'd prefer it if he'd stop making old man complains about hiphop hiphop records and made a u2 record, yeah.

stfuhut (k3vin k.), Monday, 31 August 2009 22:53 (sixteen years ago)

thing about still following bands with fading talent is that it's usually only evident in one place - jay-z is a mediocre rapper who feels the need to constantly apologize for that fact with his "i'm old, been there done that" lyrics. i don't like being hit over the head repeatedly with the fact that he is old

stfuhut (k3vin k.), Monday, 31 August 2009 22:55 (sixteen years ago)

swizz beats song sounds like 'headsprung'

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 01:09 (sixteen years ago)

this is pretty bad. "off that" is growing on me a lot, though - even tho i still dislike the sentiment, it's got some nice lines and i'm basically of the opinion at this point that the faster jay raps the better the song's gonna be

stfuhut (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 1 September 2009 01:26 (sixteen years ago)

wtf @ "forever young" tho

ojo, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 01:40 (sixteen years ago)

srsly, Forever Young pushes this album firmly into the gahbage pit. that track name, that guest star, that interpolation, that complete and pathetic lack of self-awareness. it's like him giving the final speech at the funeral of his rapping career. :(

methanietanner, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 02:01 (sixteen years ago)

the "interpretation" or whatever is awful but it's probably my second favorite track on the album just because i like the original song

stfuhut (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 1 September 2009 02:13 (sixteen years ago)

d.o.a. thru off that is solid, rest i can do w/out

major lols @ forever young. my roommate & i just kinda looked at each other like o_O

i'm beasting off the riesling (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 1 September 2009 17:41 (sixteen years ago)

j. cole is okay.

the beat to "already home" is real nice actually.

venus and mars is just unreal bad.

i'm beasting off the riesling (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 1 September 2009 17:57 (sixteen years ago)

talking bout the beat or jay? cuz the beat is actually kinda nice, i like the cracked-out spacey feel, but jay is awful on it

king dom, come (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 1 September 2009 17:59 (sixteen years ago)

no the beat, i just meant the beat to already home is a cool beat IMO, best one on the album so far by a mile

i'm beasting off the riesling (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 1 September 2009 18:00 (sixteen years ago)

YIKES this beat to "hate" what the fuck is this!

it reminds me of when i took some leftover vicodin and fucked around with MTV Music Generator on the original playstation but not as good

I like how he pedantically disputes Jay-Z's claim of ten #1 albums (which is correct) while snarking about "fact-checking"
