Ok here's a a JD controp for you: disorder is the weakest track on UP. Gets better towards the end of the song, though.

Crispy Ambulance slander? If anyone says a bad word about Stockholm Monsters we're gonna have words

i dunno if this is controversial but i prefer the alternate version of LWTUA, the one i think they used as a b-side -- it sounds a lot more like their other stuff and curtis is singing like he usually does, not doing the sinatra-esque croon. i actually heard that version first (it's the first track on the compilation album permanent, which was the first JD stuff i ever heard) and was really surprised when i realized it wasn't the famous one.

Yeah a controversial JD opinion would be "their vers of Louie Louie is the def vers"

― chr1sb3singer

or "their vers of Sister Ray is the def vers"

I do not think that there is a weak track on UP and if that is true the superlative weakest makes even less sense. Besides that Disorder is one of the best album openers ever, just take the drum intro, that bubbling bass line and the classic opening words. Later on the guitar shredding, the weird sounds and the vocal finish ("i've got the spirit but lose the feeling") are great as well but that fits perfectly with the rest.

I've sat out the discussion about Martin Hannett with amusement, but when I heard Les Bains Douches version of "Disorder" the Hannett skeptics make sense.

The version of “Love Will Tear Us Apart” on Permanent (which I don’t believe has been released anywhere else) is THE best version.

dx7 electric piano sound is good

― brimstead
there's been a big resurgence in FM synthesis and digital synthesizers / modules (specializing in FM/PM, for the average enthusiast) over the last few years. The Elektron Digitone, Korg Volca FM, Yamaha Reface DX are more popular examples. i've got a small modular setup--it's primarily digital, and a few of the voices use FM / phase modulation synthesis for really bright / robust / cutting sounds. ALM Busy Circuits have a few modules that use old Yamaha integrated circuits, and they sound freakin' lovely. For example: http://busycircuits.com/alm015/

Non controp at this point: the DX7 was and is an instrument. Like the krummhorn or hurdygurdy or oboe. Judge it as itself, not against the things it was alleged to be imitating, and all is well.

kraftwerk is corny and unenjoyable imo. there are a million other german bands/artists from the 70s that i'd rather listen to

marcos, Wednesday, 9 January 2019 16:10 (five years ago) link

ok tour de france is cool but imo the 70s stuff for which they are very famous is not good

I agree tbh, at their best they're the best tho

I remember that I found Autobahn rather ridiculous when it came out. It sounded very much like a flash in the pan. And I would have never guessed that this rather slight piece of music would have been the future. These days besides the nostalgy I quite like the soothing and trance-inducing effect it has when I listen to it. But you are right the tune is the epitome of corny. I have still to listen to it when I drive on the Autobahn which used to bore me a lot but which I almost love now. But I even prefer French and American highways as they are even more monotonous as the speed differences between the cars are almost nil.

lol and this is exactly how i felt reading about this record as a pivotal moment in electronic music and then buying it, putting it on and hearing this dinky little tune stretched out to 23 minutes

marcos, Wednesday, 9 January 2019 21:57 (five years ago) link

"Autobahn" is pretty much classic-era Kraftwerk's worst song/album, though. Radio-Activity and The Man-Machine and Trans-Europe Express are all much, much better.

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 22:00 (five years ago) link

Kraftwerk were kinda shit and the influence of dub on electronic music gets overlooked cause of Eurocentricity

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 22:00 (five years ago) link

Radio-Activity is a fairly engaging listen as a whole, but the only pre-Computer World song that I have a need for in my life is "The Robots"

It can be. I love Can. But that's not what I come to Kraftwerk for, and it's not where their talents lay.

I am exactly the opposite. I find Kraftwerk before they got into electronics much more interesting. In that clip upthread they consist of two thirds of the later Neu! and they are brilliant. When Hütter came back the band was more or less lost for me. I only discovered the early Kraftwerk much later.

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 22:32 (five years ago) link

I like efficient German engineering Kraftwork too! They were just generally really great

First one I heard was Computer World probably around 2004 and to me it was laughably dinky and slight

next year I'd purchased Minimum-Maximum and suddenly everything about the band made sense
