"She is a pretty, petite woman whose trademark outfit — a vintage evening dress accessorized with flashy sneakers, a 60’s updo, heavy eyeliner, door-knocker earrings and gold chains — recalls Gwen Stefani in the way it stylishly synthesizes a dizzying array of influences."

OMG I am DIZZY because of her many different kinds of clothes! Only Gwen Stefani has ever dressed so outrageously!

Martin Van Buren (Martin Van Buren), Sunday, 6 August 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

If only she were a rich girl.

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Sunday, 6 August 2006 12:52 (nineteen years ago)

Also, thanks for telling me what the president of her record label thinks of her music, Newyorktimes!

Martin Van Buren (Martin Van Buren), Sunday, 6 August 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

REMEMBER BACK IN 1936 WHEN HITLER WAS "VERY NOW"???

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Sunday, 6 August 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

i had some lily allen album tracks playing last night at a bbq and was asked "what is this" many, many times.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Sunday, 6 August 2006 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

the day sia michel writes an article for the times that doesn't mention the looks of whoever she's writing about is the day that the world ends.

maura (maura), Sunday, 6 August 2006 23:34 (nineteen years ago)

What exactly are the words Belle and Sebastian doing on this thread?

I think they are misprints for "Belle Stars" (also see below).

my colleague compared her to a "watered-down version of Pauline Black" from the Selecter, which I thought was a bit weird.

Hm interesting! Can I ask how old s/he was? As an outsider in nationality and (partly) time, I definitely get a UK 1979-81 feeling from the four songs I've heard -- "Oh this must be on Stiff Records", if you see what I mean.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Monday, 7 August 2006 00:22 (nineteen years ago)

vintner, he is 40 this year and is a big music fan but grew uip in the punk/postpunk eras.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Monday, 7 August 2006 10:39 (nineteen years ago)

she made it into a diplo set this weekend.

jergins (jergins), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 03:48 (nineteen years ago)

meeting of the minds, etc. people didn't dance much to it.

jergins (jergins), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 03:49 (nineteen years ago)

I assume this single will be number one immediately it's out.

-- mark grout (mark.grou...) (webmail), June 26th, 2006 8:34 AM. (link)

I assumed right. I see she's doing a video for LDN now. As opposed to one she made earlier. I assume this single will also be number one immediately it's out.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:08 (nineteen years ago)

hype's worn off.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:11 (nineteen years ago)

"I hate that Lily 'cockhead' Allen."

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:13 (nineteen years ago)

JESUS WTF?

as in, I hovered my mouse over the word "Trainers" and I immediately get a popup advertising the Nike website!

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:15 (nineteen years ago)

ooh, check so-offhand-it-hurts dig at miquita.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

"quietly made her foul point"

rtccc (mwah), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:23 (nineteen years ago)

peaches and her posh mate sound hateful too, it must be said.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:25 (nineteen years ago)

Apart from the whole story sounds like cobblers.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:37 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, how do you 'gob' onto the back of someone's trainers?

Did she kneel down? Or was Peaches actually holding them?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:37 (nineteen years ago)

it's not the point, if it's true or not, the point is the mirror wants to print it and therefore (ooh, well, this bit is shaky) people want to read it.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:40 (nineteen years ago)

What it means is that Peaches Geloff's PR have pissed off the 3am Girls and Lallen's PR have given them an exclusive on something else.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:43 (nineteen years ago)

For the record , I did not spit at the lovely Peaches Geldof . I went to the V festival and some silly journo came up to me and said ' Hi lily , that peaches , over there , said you are a stupid cokehead . Why dont you go over and have a word with her ? ' . I've known Peaches for a while now , and doubt she would say such a thing , so I ignored this journalist ( I use term journalist loosely ! ) and went about my day .

Thank you for your time

By the way Peaches is a lovely , incredibly intelligent young lady , and I want you to know there is no issue there whatsoever .

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 25 August 2006 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

I still don't understand why people don't like Lily Allen, especially the hardcore poptimists. The argument that Lily is fake and nasty just doesn't ring true. If she is fake, then what is true? If she is nasty then how is her subject matter any nastier than a rapper singing about hos and bitches nd money?

wogan lenin (dog latin), Friday, 25 August 2006 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

lily on time out's 'carnival' cover -- how apt for this week of debate on multiculturalism.

a rapper singing about hos and bitches and money (Enrique), Friday, 25 August 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

lallen's realness or lack thereof isn't why i dislike her (though it is why i resent her getting all this publicity). i fundamentally don't like her musical style, think the songs are shit, and find her voice (and esp the mockney accent) grating. i don't find her musical persona compelling either - in fact it slots neatly alongside a whole range of laddish/ladettish musical personae which are offputting to me. because of all of this, her hypocrisy in interviews also irks me, but as i've said a gazillion times, it's not something i focus on given how easily i'd forgive it if the music or persona were any good (see MIA, paris hilton, etc)

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 25 August 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
I see she's done the Kooks' "Naive" as a b-side to "LDN".

That's quite well meaning of her!

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 25 September 2006 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

i like her version of 'Naive' much more than i thought i would (see also cover of Khazi Chefs 'OMG'). Have warmed to 'LDN' LOADS also - it's so whirly.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 25 September 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

I could've qualified above by pointing out I HAET Kooks but perhaps not necessary.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 25 September 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

Amber and Alice like the song loads. Alice especially as she's just managed to ride a bike for the first time.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Thursday, 28 September 2006 08:56 (nineteen years ago)

I'll wait until she rings me up to ask whether I've ever considered changing my gas supplier.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 28 September 2006 08:57 (nineteen years ago)

i only like half of her album. i prefer it when she actually sings rather than the more bantery stuff altho 'knock 'em out' and 'alfie' are alright. it is probably a fleeting fancy as have gone off 'Smile' a bit already. it's very stupid that 'LDN' still hasn't actually been released yet.

found the Soundboy Dub dnb mix of 'Smile' on slsk - pretty bad but not as bad as the grimey Gutter mix which is appalling. dance remixes of Allen are a VERY bad idea (see also Wookie mix of LDN) unless they're going to remove her voice almost completely or just shove a load of delays on some snippets for that dubby effect. her voice def. isn't suited to more uptempo treatment - but then her songs are all quite slow in their original form.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 28 September 2006 09:19 (nineteen years ago)

it's very stupid that 'LDN' still hasn't actually been released yet
?? (I bought the CD single on Monday!)

I don't much like her indie cover versions.

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:23 (nineteen years ago)

i suspected it came out last Monday and didn't notice it at #27 last week on downloads.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:25 (nineteen years ago)

the Warbox Original Dub of 'LDN' is OK and pretty much the only route to go with Allen remixes it seems.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:26 (nineteen years ago)

hurray! 'nan you're a window shopper' is on the bsides too. they must
have cleared the sample (or removed it?)

pisces (piscesx), Thursday, 28 September 2006 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

Saw this album in Tesco for sub-£5 already.

steal compass, drive north, disappear (tissp), Thursday, 28 September 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

seems to have sold reasonably well tho.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 28 September 2006 12:53 (nineteen years ago)

the shitty "rock" song she put on her album endears me to her so much for some reason

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 28 September 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

About 150,000 last time I looked.

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 28 September 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

anyone else heard the Switch remix of LDN yet? completely bizarre, as usual. even stranger than his spank rock remix maybe.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 28 September 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

it's not as good as the DJ Wrongtom 'STH LDN' mix - how do I get my hands on that?? and what about this South Rakkas Crew mix?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Saturday, 30 September 2006 07:05 (nineteen years ago)

I thought the acoustic version of LDN she played on Jonathan Ross last night was awesome! She actually has a really, really good voice.

three months pass...
Next stop for Lily Allen: America! Although I think the most likely to succeed British export would be Amy Winehouse. But since Rupert Murdoch is bankrolling Lily's career to prove how huge MySpace is I suppose she'll do well regardless of how ill-suited she is for American radio.

musically (musically), Sunday, 21 January 2007 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

SNL next week. I've still not heard any of her music.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Sunday, 21 January 2007 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

Wow really, SNL? That's good for her...

Amy Winehouse is much more deserving of stardom, but Lil Allen is pleasant enough. I keep seeing these little commercials with her on MTV... some annoying voice screams LILY ALLEN and then she talks for a few seconds about random shit. I guess they're prepping us for LILY-MANIA.
