No Smockin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 10 December 2018 15:49 (seven years ago)

lol autocorrect y’all

I just think her lyrics are generally weak

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 15:52 (seven years ago)

i love the lyrics to "slow moon's rose"

dub pilates (rushomancy), Monday, 10 December 2018 15:54 (seven years ago)

her lyrics have an awkward ESL quality that I enjoy, esp in "High Horse." "Space Cowboy" is the one I'll likely end up throwing points to though

resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 10 December 2018 15:57 (seven years ago)

xp ?? is that the Peter Blegvad song? not sure where the reference is in this thread

sleeve, Monday, 10 December 2018 15:58 (seven years ago)

High Horse is not the best track on that album (it's decent, but surely not the best) but mostly it's not v representative, Slow Burn is

I believe there was something approximating board consensus that Love Is a Wild Thing is the best of the bunch

niels, Monday, 10 December 2018 15:59 (seven years ago)

“Space Cowboy” is my favorite of the bunch; tho when I said that on the Kacey thread, I think literally 5 ppl. jumped in and said, “Nah, that song suxx!” — so, ??

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 16:02 (seven years ago)

Maybe I’m just not meant to be a Kacey Head

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 16:03 (seven years ago)

(Oh wait, it was “Velvet Elvis”)

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 16:03 (seven years ago)

Space Cowboy is my favorite too!

No Smockin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 10 December 2018 16:20 (seven years ago)

"high horse" is pretty lame as the song off that ppl have galvanized around... every other song on the record is a classic tho

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 December 2018 16:29 (seven years ago)

for the "outre" choice I would have expected "Oh, What a World"

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Monday, 10 December 2018 16:32 (seven years ago)

Is it evening? Late night? Daytime? Why does it seem to change with every line?

this is not a personal attack on morrisp, but i'm so glad i'm the kind of listener who would never even notice this, much less care

alpine static, Monday, 10 December 2018 17:20 (seven years ago)

also, if pressed, i *might* argue that's the best verse on the best song on the best album of 2018, so *shrug*

also also ... i love "Mother" so much

alpine static, Monday, 10 December 2018 17:21 (seven years ago)

No attack taken... (and I’m not usually even the type to get hung up on lyrix, so i dunno)

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 17:26 (seven years ago)

Mother is a beautiful little song, the vocal melody reminds me of Rapture

niels, Monday, 10 December 2018 17:27 (seven years ago)

Joaquin Oliver, an avowed Frank Ocean fan who loved Blonde so much he’d dyed his own hair to match, was only 17 when he was gunned down in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting this past February. The same day, Ocean released a cover of the melancholy “Moon River,” from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It was a coincidence;

xp I think that song (“Slow Burn”) feels like an accumulation of banalities that are supposed to strike the listener as little epiphanies, but it just doesn’t work for me personally... it’s no big deal.

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 17:32 (seven years ago)

(Like talking to someone who’s high when you’re not, and maybe that’s actually the idea, lol)

Textura's top picks for 2018

this is where I'm at with it -- there's this sense, it seems to me, that "In Tennessee, the sun's goin' down / But in Beijing, they're heading out to work" is supposed to elicit a #whoa #wow reaction, which it really doesn't. it's still a pleasant song! it's just strange to rally around, being so unassuming. the unassumingness is what's good about it, too.

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Monday, 10 December 2018 17:38 (seven years ago)

xxp definitely no big deal :)

and let's be honest, the primary reason to love Slow Burn is the vibe, the space, the *sound* ... I do love those lines (and all the lines) but there is no song in 2018 more worth living inside than Slow Burn

alpine static, Monday, 10 December 2018 17:41 (seven years ago)

"born in a hurry, always late, haven't been early since '88" is a good opening long for a song called "slow burn"

popmatters list has a bunch of things i haven't heard of at all that sound interesting

ufo, Monday, 10 December 2018 17:53 (seven years ago)

xp to me **opening line, d'oh

big crime for a SPECIAL WHATEVER (voodoo chili), Monday, 10 December 2018 17:56 (seven years ago)

I rate that Anne Garner #1 from the Textura list very highly.

Siegbran, Monday, 10 December 2018 18:04 (seven years ago)

xp ?? is that the Peter Blegvad song? not sure where the reference is in this thread

― sleeve

lyrics were written to make no sense

dub pilates (rushomancy), Monday, 10 December 2018 18:09 (seven years ago)

popmatters list far less interesting than it looks

textura seems intriguing tho

imago, Monday, 10 December 2018 18:12 (seven years ago)

As usual, Textura has zero overlap with any other publication’s list.

Siegbran, Monday, 10 December 2018 18:26 (seven years ago)

Anne Garner sounding great so far.

pomenitul, Monday, 10 December 2018 18:28 (seven years ago)

slow burn has great lyrics and i'm not sure what the criticism of the quoted lines is supposed to be ...?

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 10 December 2018 18:56 (seven years ago)

Is it evening? Late night? Daytime? Why does it seem to change with every line?

so the earth is a globe,

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 10 December 2018 18:57 (seven years ago)

well, if the sun's going down in Tennessee and the bars are closing in an hour where she is, then she's probably somewhere in Europe. Seems like a detail you might want to mention, Kacey!

President Keyes, Monday, 10 December 2018 19:02 (seven years ago)

she has acknowledged that it's a dubious timeline, and that her husband called her on it, but she didn't care.

speaking of which, her husband made a top 20-worthy album this year that i've seen on no lists at all.

alpine static, Monday, 10 December 2018 19:25 (seven years ago)

xp Yep, that's pretty much it... plus, you don't usually "look at flowers" in the dark(?)

I haven't read her interview, funny it came up, all is cool, etc.

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 19:29 (seven years ago)

If you can go fishin' in the dark you can look at flowers imo

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 19:39 (seven years ago)

i would think the funky timeline fits the concept ... 'slow burn ... ' the bar closes in two hours ... we hang out all night and then see the flowers ...

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 10 December 2018 19:47 (seven years ago)

so is anyone contributing to Uproxx's list or

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 10 December 2018 19:48 (seven years ago)

i want to contribute to a list but i don't want it to be hosted by a record label

i fancied trying to DIY it earlier this year but...

alpine static, Monday, 10 December 2018 19:56 (seven years ago)

sorry, hosted by an outlet that is owned by a record label, is what i meant to write

alpine static, Monday, 10 December 2018 19:56 (seven years ago)

"Slow Burn" sounds like Sufjan Stevens so the p4k list has credibility.

billstevejim, Monday, 10 December 2018 19:57 (seven years ago)

assuming it's in their list, i did not read it yet

if Sufjan Stevens covered "Carolina On My Mind" maybe

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Monday, 10 December 2018 20:02 (seven years ago)

Kacey talks about those lyrics *very briefly* at the end of this:
