gorilla vs bear tracks list

ufo, Monday, 10 December 2018 06:06 (five years ago) link

Pitchfork tracks list is out. A bit of a surprise at #1.

monotony, Monday, 10 December 2018 06:09 (five years ago) link

Can you spoil it, so I don’t have to scroll thru 8 pgs.?

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 06:14 (five years ago) link

it's "love it if we made it" at #1. i'm delighted by that, i'd half suspected it might get there since they surely weren't going to go for "this is america" like everyone else

also fantastic to see "malamente" at #3!

ufo, Monday, 10 December 2018 06:17 (five years ago) link

i'm finding the pitchfork list quite agreeable this year for the most part, but i've also heard nearly every track on there so there's not the thrill of finding gems i'd missed, unfortunately

ufo, Monday, 10 December 2018 06:33 (five years ago) link

Lots of great stuff in that list.

Tim F, Monday, 10 December 2018 06:40 (five years ago) link

pleased to see a Rae Morris shoutout on the GvB list, that's up there for me as one of the year's most criminally ignored records

monotony, Monday, 10 December 2018 06:42 (five years ago) link

This list obviously blows, but to be fair, there’s probably been like 10 good songs released this year

5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 10 December 2018 06:45 (five years ago) link

wonder if we'll have a record number of album tracks on the ILX traxpoll this year

imago, Monday, 10 December 2018 07:36 (five years ago) link

and whether that'd even be a good thing

imago, Monday, 10 December 2018 07:40 (five years ago) link

weirdest thing about the pitchfork list is that the highest rated track from sweetener was the title track!?!?

josh az (2011nostalgia), Monday, 10 December 2018 08:19 (five years ago) link

The Pitchfork tracks list always annoys me, even though I like most of what's on it, it always seems so, I don't know, curated just behind the curve. Like of course they'll relegate This Is America to the b-leagues, of course there will be carefully chosen examples of current trends in there, but it's all so fucking polite and tasteful, nothing "problematic", nothing to argue about at all in fact. It seems to be all about what's in, not about what people love.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 10 December 2018 09:02 (five years ago) link

careful with that talk

imago, Monday, 10 December 2018 09:09 (five years ago) link

The Post Malone at #100 seems like a personal insult. Like "almost everything you liked this year is worse than this Post Malone track"

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 10 December 2018 09:26 (five years ago) link

padding out their 100 with kurt vile because that's their brand

imago, Monday, 10 December 2018 09:28 (five years ago) link

Joey B x La Même Gang "Stables"

Hahahahahaha wtf is this? Like you can decry excessive homogenisation and playlist culture all you want but then you realise that this year someone tried to make a spaghetti western afro-trap record and everything feels a little bit better.

Matt DC, Monday, 10 December 2018 09:40 (five years ago) link

i thought new patek was seen as boring + disappointing? anyway i think the pitchfork is good, for what it is, but then i dont care about robyn or mitski or serpentwithfeet so ymmv

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 10 December 2018 09:56 (five years ago) link

the post malone troll is funny but it kind of sucks to think abt all the artists who get left off for the meme

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 10 December 2018 09:57 (five years ago) link

i've kind of got bored with 'pick up', but it's nice to see 'itgehane' get lots of placings

my name is leee john, for we are many (NickB), Monday, 10 December 2018 11:43 (five years ago) link

not that they're related but they seem to be the two straight dance tunes that are appearing on a lot of indie-leaning lists

my name is leee john, for we are many (NickB), Monday, 10 December 2018 11:45 (five years ago) link

Koze has been indie-friendly for years, but 'Itgehane' is this year's 'Inspector Norse', it's just been everywhere.

Matt DC, Monday, 10 December 2018 12:01 (five years ago) link

what is this year's bicep album equivalent??

my name is leee john, for we are many (NickB), Monday, 10 December 2018 12:20 (five years ago) link

Jon Hopkins is the closest I can think of but I don't think there's a like-for-like example.

Matt DC, Monday, 10 December 2018 12:24 (five years ago) link

Could be the DJ Healer album tbh.

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 10 December 2018 12:25 (five years ago) link

Rival Consoles almost hit that spot for me.

pomenitul, Monday, 10 December 2018 12:27 (five years ago) link

lmao @ that P4K number 1

single bed mentality (||||||||), Monday, 10 December 2018 12:43 (five years ago) link

I don't know why I had this feeling the Alice In Chains record could be good and I'd missed out on some glorious 'return to form', but it totally washed over me (in a bland way). Next one on the pile: that J Mascis record that also completely flew under my radar.

Siegbran, Monday, 10 December 2018 12:49 (five years ago) link

Yeah, there's no bite to it.

pomenitul, Monday, 10 December 2018 12:53 (five years ago) link

Pitchfork tracks list is out. A bit of a surprise at #1.

You could literally pick any face tat thread at random and come away with a better song

The Poppy Bush AutoZone (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 10 December 2018 13:37 (five years ago) link

This is like the least surprising thing ever

I mean, it is in the sense that they were utterly lukewarm on them during their last album cycle.

resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 10 December 2018 13:45 (five years ago) link

They've been on the D so hard lately though

The Poppy Bush AutoZone (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 10 December 2018 13:48 (five years ago) link

Xpost oops I meant face tat thread POST at random

Alfred have you been working out?

The Poppy Bush AutoZone (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 10 December 2018 13:48 (five years ago) link

Never stopped!

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 10 December 2018 14:00 (five years ago) link

weirdest thing about the pitchfork list is that the highest rated track from sweetener was the title track!?!?

Yeah — I love the song (being a resident of the Republic of Ariana-stan), but that seems like a bit of a ... “challop,” am I using that right?

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 14:44 (five years ago) link

bandcamp's started rolling out their album list

lowercase (eric), Monday, 10 December 2018 14:53 (five years ago) link

the specific singles are definitely a surprise -- I think I voted for "No Tears Left to Cry"

doja cat is like the anti-'baby shark'?

my name is leee john, for we are many (NickB), Monday, 10 December 2018 15:30 (five years ago) link

12. JIMOTHY LACOSTE, “SUBWAY SYSTEM”

I was wondering when this would happen.

Matt DC, Monday, 10 December 2018 15:30 (five years ago) link

oh that reminds me, the other big surprise is "5 Dollars" over "Girlfriend" or "Doesn't Matter"

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Monday, 10 December 2018 15:31 (five years ago) link

"sweetener" sucks. on the whole the list is pretty good though

resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 10 December 2018 15:32 (five years ago) link

“Snow Burn” gets a lotta love for a song with this “??” verse:

In Tennessee, the sun's goin' down
But in Beijing, they're heading out to work
You know the bar down the street don't close for an hour
We should take a walk and look at all the flowers

Is it evening? Late night? Daytime? Why does it seem to change with every line?

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 15:34 (five years ago) link

I like Doja Cat, but "Go To Town" is easily the better track, think it might have a good position on these lists if (a) it hadn't been overshadowed by the Mooo! video and (b) that whole "saying 'faggot' is fine" / "Doja Cat cancelled" thing.

Still do not get 'It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)', it doesn't grab me at all, may try again.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 10 December 2018 15:35 (five years ago) link

great to see cupcakKe high on that p4k list

go to down def better than mooo

niels, Monday, 10 December 2018 15:36 (five years ago) link

doja cat had zero traction critically pre-"mooo" so i doubt it's overshadowing any of her tracks in that sense

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 December 2018 15:38 (five years ago) link

I like mooo and appreciate what it's done for her career, it's just that go to town is a banger

niels, Monday, 10 December 2018 15:39 (five years ago) link

the pitchfork list doesn't reflect a reality i recognize esp at it pertains to pop, rap and R&b but that's been the case for several years now... it's a good year to pick a crazy no 1 tho

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 December 2018 15:42 (five years ago) link
