actually i do rly like 4 of the top 5 so no real beef

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:31 (five years ago) link

If I had to guess, I think Let's Eat Grandma might end up topping the ILM list.

resident hack (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:32 (five years ago) link

no wayyyyy. they might make the top 10. might.

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:33 (five years ago) link

for all that i like the album it isn't in my 25, for instance

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:33 (five years ago) link

if i had to guess it'd be Kacey Musgraves but there's a loooot of possibilities

ufo, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:37 (five years ago) link

swear we're missing something obvious

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:39 (five years ago) link

It's going to be Robyn.

Robyn would surely be the most underwhelming winner ever? Guess I'd better see what the fuss is about this 'Robyn' character then!!

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:44 (five years ago) link

2014 was the last time there was this little consensus in all the publication lists and it was War on Drugs/St Vincent/Run the Jewels/FKA Twigs that did best in the aggregate lists

this year it's Janelle Monae/Low/Mitski topping the aggregates so far and at the very least Low doing so well is pretty cool

ufo, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:46 (five years ago) link

oh yeah, Low. Low was the obvious thing

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:47 (five years ago) link

Semi-plausible winner that would make me genuinely proud of ILM = Sun el-Musician.

Matt DC, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:47 (five years ago) link

no wayyyyy. they might make the top 10. might.

yes, as previously established your taste has a 1:1 relationship with the rest of ilm

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:04 (five years ago) link

xp that would be a pleasant shock at #1. It has been galling not to see it on a single list so far, Burna Boy too

rob, Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:11 (five years ago) link

i wouldn't be that surprised if sun-el popped up in the spin list but these lists very rarely engage with non-western scenes unless an act makes a strong push for recognition etc

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/06/arts/music/best-albums.html

here's the New York Times' lists - Jon Caramanica's is probably the absolute weirdest out of anything posted in this thread but then it's a personal list and not some sort of consensus

ufo, Thursday, 6 December 2018 15:20 (five years ago) link

Does Ben Ratliff not write for them anymore? He used to do a list, too

Great to see DJ Healer place quite high on the Noisey lis. He's prob missing out bcz of the relative obscurity of it. But man, what an album.

"god is a woman" is such a bad song

"No Tears Left to Cry" is a victim of being released earlier in the year and/or Ariana leaning into gigantic meme status later in the year, but it's the best single by a mile

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 6 December 2018 16:58 (five years ago) link

noisey list has some interesting stuff but also stuff that's just... noisy

glad to see "hands" place

kudos to stereogum for putting together a metal top ten that i haven't heard any of

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 December 2018 17:07 (five years ago) link

There are too many mediocre Skepta collabs in that Complex list but otherwise it's the best list so far, banger after banger in there.

afaik seandalai, gr80, and moka

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 6 December 2018 17:10 (five years ago) link

The Agrimonia is the only album on the Stereogum metal list I've heard, and it rules.

This quote is amazing:

This list will disappoint you. (Also, year-end lists are dumb, dumber than our usual lists, which is saying something, but I digress.) Picture Jake Bannon screaming “YOU FAIL ME” at someone vomiting on his shoes — that’s us, failing you in real time. Unless the things you love happen to perfectly align with the schizophrenic nonsense we slapped together and labeled “BEST OF 2018,” your thirst for listicular validation shall go unquenched. There will be no Thou. No Yob, Panopticon, Horrendous, Slugdge, At The Gates, Dödsrit, Deafheaven, High On Fire, Sleep, none of it. Not even Deicide. (Stan is furious.) For better or worse, we made a collective decision to eschew grand narratives and editorial coherence, and instead give you our unvarnished favorites — the things we loved most (or hated least).

co-sign. "thank u, next" is fun to write/read/think about i guess, but it's a pretty dull song imo.
