That Messa album is great.

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 19:06 (seven years ago)

i agree that Sleep isn't that great. Sleep is a merch-sales operation at this point.

Yob is fucking great, though. Whiney is right about the melody and the soaring. and Mike's one of the best vocalists going, in any genre. they're great recorded, and they're mind-blowing live.

did they get more coverage because of the near-death experience? maybe a couple pieces, but nothing major. everyone writes about a new Yob record ... and with good reason.

alpine static, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 19:09 (seven years ago)

glad this thread has had a metal takeover anyway

imago, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 19:11 (seven years ago)

i mean they could've kept his medical issues under wraps and done just fine. Yob doesn't need to cook up a hook for press, c'mon.

alpine static, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 19:11 (seven years ago)

Scheidt's voice does absolutely nothing for me.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 19:12 (seven years ago)

i also think it's worth noting that Mike does a good job - whether you're reading his words or you have a chance to talk to him about it - of passionately and precisely explaining how his experience affected and fueled Our Raw Heart. like, it's *part of the story* of the music, it's not just in the press release because it sounds cool.

alpine static, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 19:17 (seven years ago)

yob have great album art

brimstead, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 19:26 (seven years ago)

"x do/does nothing for me" is of course a perfectly fine statement, my side-eye only gets raised when it's associated with "here's a list of similar bands who are OBVIOUSLY superior based on arcane personal criteria"

resident hack (Simon H.), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 19:32 (seven years ago)

wow american pleasure club is not for me

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 21:37 (seven years ago)

I didn't really get it either. Might go back and try again at some point, but who has the time

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 21:56 (seven years ago)

i do like the flasher record

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 22:09 (seven years ago)

Sleep sucks too, FTR. (So does Neurosis, just to complete the everyone-is-wrong-but-me trifecta.)

― grawlix (unperson)

so would you say sleep is wrong?

that Guttersnipe -My Mother the Vent record from the Wire and Quietus lists is completely insane

Dan S, Thursday, 6 December 2018 02:28 (seven years ago)

really kind of love ZULI - Terminal

Yeah, I’m down with this record

5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 6 December 2018 03:25 (seven years ago)

I know you all like "This is America" because it's feels like a statement or something but I'm still waiting for someone to give "Baby Shark" the respectful nod it deserves. The actual zeitgeist song of the year.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 6 December 2018 03:59 (seven years ago)

I for one have no idea what that is. any relation to left shark

resident hack (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 04:00 (seven years ago)

Oh it's an indie gem with 2,016,756,968 views that's been around for a while but the western world just became acquainted with its relentless power this year.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 6 December 2018 04:02 (seven years ago)

i feel confident enough that baby shark will place higher than this is america in the ilm tracks poll at least

ufo, Thursday, 6 December 2018 04:12 (seven years ago)

I will vote for it unironically.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 6 December 2018 04:15 (seven years ago)

if approx 1/5 of the world likes it (I'm assuming repeat views) how good can it be

resident hack (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 04:30 (seven years ago)

I can’t hum one bar of This Is America

5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 6 December 2018 04:56 (seven years ago)

The “I Ain’t Gonna Play Sun City” of our time

5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 6 December 2018 05:00 (seven years ago)

ouch!

sleeve, Thursday, 6 December 2018 05:12 (seven years ago)

“This is America” is all about the music video, and it’s a brilliant one... top 10 of the decade even. But, song of the year? To each its own but I don’t think it’s even the best song on his album.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 6 December 2018 05:31 (seven years ago)

thanks to Tim for mentioning the Roy Kinsey album, that's really excellent

ufo, Thursday, 6 December 2018 06:47 (seven years ago)

I don't want to be that guy but the Einsturzende Neubauten original version of Baby Shark is best.

I like it but the only song that really stuck with me is the one that kinda sounds like Neil Young

big crime for a SPECIAL WHATEVER (voodoo chili), Thursday, 6 December 2018 12:55 (seven years ago)

surprised to see tierra whack bag a couple of number ones. fun album but a bit slight and really wished she’d let some of the ideas stretch out a bit. felt like something that crop up in the lower (more interesting) reaches of these lists

single bed mentality (||||||||), Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:06 (seven years ago)

it's nice that this year's been open enough that something like that can top some of these lists, makes a nice change from recent years where everything was dominated by a handful of Event Albums

ufo, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:10 (seven years ago)

I mean there are a few totemic ones that are making almost every list, but yeah this feels like a less consensus-ruled year than most

resident hack (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:21 (seven years ago)

that is a very triumphant list. yassss

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:30 (seven years ago)

actually i do rly like 4 of the top 5 so no real beef

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:31 (seven years ago)

If I had to guess, I think Let's Eat Grandma might end up topping the ILM list.

resident hack (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:32 (seven years ago)

no wayyyyy. they might make the top 10. might.

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:33 (seven years ago)

for all that i like the album it isn't in my 25, for instance

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:33 (seven years ago)

if i had to guess it'd be Kacey Musgraves but there's a loooot of possibilities

ufo, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:37 (seven years ago)

swear we're missing something obvious

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:39 (seven years ago)

It's going to be Robyn.

Matt DC, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:43 (seven years ago)

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:43 (seven years ago)

Robyn would surely be the most underwhelming winner ever? Guess I'd better see what the fuss is about this 'Robyn' character then!!

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:44 (seven years ago)

2014 was the last time there was this little consensus in all the publication lists and it was War on Drugs/St Vincent/Run the Jewels/FKA Twigs that did best in the aggregate lists

this year it's Janelle Monae/Low/Mitski topping the aggregates so far and at the very least Low doing so well is pretty cool

ufo, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:46 (seven years ago)

oh yeah, Low. Low was the obvious thing

imago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:47 (seven years ago)

Semi-plausible winner that would make me genuinely proud of ILM = Sun el-Musician.

Matt DC, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:47 (seven years ago)

no wayyyyy. they might make the top 10. might.

yes, as previously established your taste has a 1:1 relationship with the rest of ilm

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:04 (seven years ago)

xp that would be a pleasant shock at #1. It has been galling not to see it on a single list so far, Burna Boy too

rob, Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:11 (seven years ago)

i wouldn't be that surprised if sun-el popped up in the spin list but these lists very rarely engage with non-western scenes unless an act makes a strong push for recognition etc
