i agree that Sleep isn't that great. Sleep is a merch-sales operation at this point.

Yob is fucking great, though. Whiney is right about the melody and the soaring. and Mike's one of the best vocalists going, in any genre. they're great recorded, and they're mind-blowing live.

did they get more coverage because of the near-death experience? maybe a couple pieces, but nothing major. everyone writes about a new Yob record ... and with good reason.

Scheidt's voice does absolutely nothing for me.

i also think it's worth noting that Mike does a good job - whether you're reading his words or you have a chance to talk to him about it - of passionately and precisely explaining how his experience affected and fueled Our Raw Heart. like, it's *part of the story* of the music, it's not just in the press release because it sounds cool.

"x do/does nothing for me" is of course a perfectly fine statement, my side-eye only gets raised when it's associated with "here's a list of similar bands who are OBVIOUSLY superior based on arcane personal criteria"

“This is America” is all about the music video, and it’s a brilliant one... top 10 of the decade even. But, song of the year? To each its own but I don’t think it’s even the best song on his album.

I like it but the only song that really stuck with me is the one that kinda sounds like Neil Young

surprised to see tierra whack bag a couple of number ones. fun album but a bit slight and really wished she’d let some of the ideas stretch out a bit. felt like something that crop up in the lower (more interesting) reaches of these lists

it's nice that this year's been open enough that something like that can top some of these lists, makes a nice change from recent years where everything was dominated by a handful of Event Albums

I mean there are a few totemic ones that are making almost every list, but yeah this feels like a less consensus-ruled year than most

2014 was the last time there was this little consensus in all the publication lists and it was War on Drugs/St Vincent/Run the Jewels/FKA Twigs that did best in the aggregate lists

this year it's Janelle Monae/Low/Mitski topping the aggregates so far and at the very least Low doing so well is pretty cool

yes, as previously established your taste has a 1:1 relationship with the rest of ilm

xp that would be a pleasant shock at #1. It has been galling not to see it on a single list so far, Burna Boy too

i wouldn't be that surprised if sun-el popped up in the spin list but these lists very rarely engage with non-western scenes unless an act makes a strong push for recognition etc
