You know it was the first sentence of the press release, right? And I'm well aware of how long Yob have been around - the first record of theirs I heard was the aptly titled The Illusion of Motion. There's a fair amount of good doom out there, but Yob are boring and bad.

Literally every single one of their post-hiatus albums has been EOY list fodder.

There is nothing exceptional about the treatment this record's gotten AFAICT

There are plenty of hyped up releases I don't care for but I generally assume it's because they hear something I don't, not because they're dumb rubes who fell for an extramusical marketing hook.

Absolutely true. They've been critical darlings for a decade, and I'm honestly kind of impressed that they've managed to thread the needle and lure in both metal writers and "I don't know shit about metal but this is the best metal album of the year" indie schmendricks. I still think they suck, though.

You clown yourself by pretending that shit doesn't matter. I've argued for years that critics' polls should include four categories: Artist, Title, Label, and Publicist.

I have no idea who this band is, but, like, every press release tells a story about stuff happening in the artist's life, singling out any one band for it is kind of like singling out a person for breathing air. (there's a point to be made about how this is sometimes gruesome/commodifying for the musician, but that point is not here)

I think i read a Ben Ratliff thing that I always think about, w/r/t their interplay. They really feel synced into each other. They have melody and soar. This is maybe my third fave Yob record.

i just put on the new yob and i can sorta immediately tell why it's special? they're really locked in and dynamic and there are good melodies on top of it

just wanna note that the break in Yob releases was not exactly a "hiatus", more like Mike's attempt to start a totally new band that became a total clusterfuck cuz of some legalistic jerks:

and I think he just gave up at that point and went back to Yob, but not totally sure. I was roommates with the Middian bass player for a while and heard abt most of this as it was going down.

I mean, I will grant unperson that, yes, T E H N A R R A T I V E has granted them maybe a little more coverage/focus then they would get otherwise, but they are easily the best non-Sleep doom band of the last 15 years so who gives a shit

Having just heard the new Evoken, I'll take those guys over anything by Yob or Sleep.

Aside from Evoken, a few doom and doom-ish bands that have released albums more deserving of attention than Yob's or Sleep's this year: Messa, Argonavis, Hamferð, Hooded Menace, Churchburn, Mournful Congregation.

That Messa album is great.

i agree that Sleep isn't that great. Sleep is a merch-sales operation at this point.

Yob is fucking great, though. Whiney is right about the melody and the soaring. and Mike's one of the best vocalists going, in any genre. they're great recorded, and they're mind-blowing live.

did they get more coverage because of the near-death experience? maybe a couple pieces, but nothing major. everyone writes about a new Yob record ... and with good reason.

Scheidt's voice does absolutely nothing for me.

i also think it's worth noting that Mike does a good job - whether you're reading his words or you have a chance to talk to him about it - of passionately and precisely explaining how his experience affected and fueled Our Raw Heart. like, it's *part of the story* of the music, it's not just in the press release because it sounds cool.

"x do/does nothing for me" is of course a perfectly fine statement, my side-eye only gets raised when it's associated with "here's a list of similar bands who are OBVIOUSLY superior based on arcane personal criteria"
