First instinct: "For Pete's Sake."

I hope Peter got some nice residuals for it being the end credit music for Season 2.

Second instinct: Pinball repeatedly between 3 or 4 songs, brain gets deadlocked, end up not voting.

I just ran through the OG albums last week (probably heard 'em all dozens of times since my mom passed her LPs down to me thirty years back), and I don't even know, man. I've always liked the lower-key and weirdo songs best. 'Randy Scouse Git' maybe?

Kinda want to listen to the complete sessions again now.

Totally doing this rn, btw.

'All of Your Toys' is a pretty hot track. No idea why it didn't wind up on the album.

And hey, 'She'll Be There'!

I might have to do a Headquarters b-sides and rarities poll after this one has concluded. Maybe follow that up with a poll of alternate takes, see if I can get all of two or three people to cast votes. It'll be fun.

Alternate title: The distant night bird POLLS the sun

There is really nothing I dislike on this album. Boyce and Hart's tunes are good, Weil/Mann, Tork's song is great, Nesmith, it's all good.

I could vote for "Randy Scouse Git" or for "Sunny Girlfriend," but I think I'm gonna stick with the one the producer wrote.

Sunny Girlfriend.

Yeah, I have one.

Mark G, Wednesday, 28 November 2018 10:37 (seven years ago)

i only knew the songs on the box set and then when i went to see them in concert they did "early morning blues and greens", which was great, so i voted that

Bruh, look upthread, I was just live-'blogging' my journey through the sessions yesterday morning. And yes, I've listened to the whole thing before. Davy was certainly a foul-mouthed little git.

Fantasy Eyelid (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 28 November 2018 14:49 (seven years ago)

Oh my bad! I must listen to it all, it's on Spotify too.

"Shades of Gray", the bit where Pete comes in with his wavery uncertain vocal always tugs at my heart strings.

Monica Kindle (Tom D.), Wednesday, 28 November 2018 15:17 (seven years ago)

"You Just Maybe the One", "For Pete's Sake", "Randy Scouse Git", all great.

Screen Gems could not acquire the copyright, apparently.

You Just May Be The One came on on shuffle in the car the other day, so might as well be that as anything else.

One of my favourite albums, even without Girl I Knew Somewhere making it on.

No mention of "Mr. Webster" yet? My love of wordy, yet succinct, story songs probably stems in large part from this. And I love the little trick of leaving the last line of a lyric hanging on a minor chord, like ..."each time Frisbee promised him a ^^^ RAISE..." (I don't know the technical name for this.)

"Early Morning Blues and Greens" is haunting too. This is a really strong record.

Will all these tracks get votes, or will some get zilch?
