fans of Hate Eternal won't be disappointed by the new one, but there are a lot of tasty, melodic and dual harmonic moments that elevate this one a wee bit.
it's fuckin pummeling.
decided to go see the first show on the HE/CC tour

Brutal Death Metal album art is like an A E S T H E T I C now
Me, I'm listening to the most recent Arizmenda album and it's pretty good but lacks some of the outre imagination of his tapes or track on the Desert Dances and Serpent Sermons comp.

Triptykon will be performing the complete work 'Requiem' (Celtic Frost's 'Rex Irae' was the first movement of three) at Roadburn 2019, with an orchestra. I gotta say, Tom G. Warrior describing a collaborator with the words "whose patience with me appears to be limitless" has given me my biggest laugh of the day, if not the week.

Listening to the "Work In Progress Rough Mix" disc of the ...And Justice For All box. It's not that interesting - what it mostly proves to me is that the argument that these songs needed more bass has always been bullshit. There's bass on these tracks, and it adds nothing. It's just a dense rumble in the background, with zero additional melodic or harmonic content. It sounds like distortion, frankly.
The most interesting thing about these tracks is that the guitar solos (and in some cases, like "The Shortest Straw," the backing vocals) hadn't been laid down yet, so there's long sections of James and Kirk hammering down the riffs and you just have to imagine the solo that should be there.

I was listening to Cowboys From Hell the other day and was struck how much the production sounded like AJFA - if you play a few songs back to back you can hear the similarities quite clearly, but also how Pantera (despite being a vastly inferior band) totally nailed this super overdubbed dry thrash metal sound only a year later, while with Metallica it just sounds much weaker, there’s something missing, maybe it’s bass, maybe it’s the drum sound but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

From TGW himself on the Tryptikon board:
The second part of Celtic Frost's Requiem was not "lost". It had never been written, which is something very different. I began writing the Requiem in 1986, and I finished the first section for inclusion on the Into the Pandemonium album in 1987. I had always intended to eventually write a section two and three, but there was no urgency attached. We had also planned to eventually release an EP with the finished Requiem and, perhaps, perform it live at a special event. These plans were utterly derailed, however, when I pathetically lost my sanity and credibility and recorded an abomination instead of a Celtic Frost album in 1988. Upon reforming the group in 2001, Martin and I soon mused about finally finishing another section of the Reqiuem. The result was Winter, released on the Monotheist album, which was the third, and final part. The second part remained to be written (the sequence was of no importance to me as long as the entire piece wasn't finished). I thought that I would include it on a future Celtic Frost album. Once again, Celtic Frost disintegrated before this could be accomplished, but ever since the formation of Triptykon, I have talked with the members of the band about one day finishing the missing second part of the Requiem and perhaps then recording and/or performing the entire three-part piece. Due to the initiative of a friend of Triptykon late last year, we have now begun the process of writing this second part. The intention is, if all goes well, to perform the entire Requiem onstage in 2019. This will likely also be filmed.

Best part of doc is probably performance at what appears to be some sort of "fair" in front of a enraptured but not exactly adoring audience. Music in it a little different from new record (or at least first track on new record) more Boredoms than Utech to me.

For those who loved Astronoid but wish they would be more prolific (it's been a while since their last album and with Mike DeMellia leaving the group it may be even longer even as they get yet another decent support slot for Between The Buried And Me and TesseracT) I think I discovered a reasonable facsimile in Sylvaine.

Two of the veteran metal bands here in the midwest I like have put out records in the past few months.
Stonecutters from Louisville just put out their fifth LP. Just heard a couple of tracks, but they are really good live and I hope to see them live again sometime soon.

Apostle of Solitude from Indianapolis put out their album back in February but they are just getting ready to tour in Europe starting next week. Saw them last Saturday night here in Lexvegas. Doom metal with harmony vocals is pretty good in my boat. I like these guys quite a bit.

I like the new Psycroptic, cos it has hooks amongst its noodling, but I feel like every tech death album to come out in the wake of the two Necrophagist albums has the same wafer-thin, sterile production and it drives me nuts.

Famine's lyrics are as despicable as ever, although when he spews the line 'gros comme Babar' (big like Babar the Elephant) to describe his pureblood tribe, I couldn't help but wonder whether he's been taking the piss all along.
