I also didn't realize the guitarist is named "Courtney Loove" (which is obviously f'in awesome)

I just discovered recently (when Snail Mail covered one of their songs) that there was also a band on K Records named Courtney Love:https://www.discogs.com/artist/324130-Courtney-Love-2

damn that's an old-school pitchfork review
never heard a note by these guys but judging by the Zep-obsessed dorks who won't shut up about them I figure this is pretty damn accurate
― frogbs, Tuesday, 23 October 2018 14:53 (seven years ago)
It's also being discussed in the 'What Is Rockism?' thread.

it is a throwback to old style p4k but GVF is such an easy target

if you were an incoming freshman in 2005 who put “everything but rap and country” on your Facebook profile, there was another website growing in popularity that year that covered everything: Pitchfork Media.
I’m being unfair. Pitchfork did cover rap once in a while, but that was new at the time.
yeah they weren't as rap-focused in 2005 as they are now, but there are more than 300 pre-2006 hip hop reviews in the archives, so "once in a while" is also also unfair.
― President Keyes, Thursday, 25 October 2018 14:41 (seven years ago)
I mean they also didn’t cover a lot of metal or punk unless it was hipster contingent stuff.

Popula is a journalist-owned, journalist-run, ad-free publication on the Ethereum-based Civil publishing platform.

― dub pilates (rushomancy), Thursday, 25 October 2018 16:18 (seven years ago)
I know Burzum fans love feeling persecuted but most of the important black metal albums came out in the 90s
― 5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 25 October 2018 16:22 (seven years ago)
yeah, all those 90s Bathory and Celtic Frost albums everyone loves

Pitchfork had already published a list of The Top 100 Albums of the 1980s in 2002, since scrubbed from the internet.
um, it's right here. https://pitchfork.com/features/lists-and-guides/the-top-100-albums-of-the-1980s/
― fred-a van vleet (voodoo chili), Thursday, 25 October 2018 22:22 (seven years ago)
iirc you can also donate to Popula via traditional crowdfunding, which is good cuz Civil has turned out to be a fiasco (for some reason???)
― wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Thursday, 25 October 2018 22:33 (seven years ago)
Making it about Burzum seems like a strawman, as if the old Pitchfork celebrated Metallica and Van Halen and never ran a "worst guitar solos of all time" feature that included "Dazed and Confused" and "Comfortably Numb".

i guess i was too oblique, my point was more that both genres are absolutely riddled with racist pieces of shit, particularly in terms of their fanbases

Rewatching this, I feel like someone should really have told her not to post it, or at least to go back and work out what her arguments were and then make a new video.
― mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 22:02 (seven years ago)
that video is fascinating. I find this whole thing fascinating. not only does she fundamentally misunderstand what music criticism is, her anger betrays an insecurity that p much every GVF fan has expressed since the p4k review was published. if p4k really doesn't matter, if they really are just preaching to the choir, just churning out haters and think pieces, uh.... who gives a shit? your new favorite band is #1 on the Billboard Top 200. they're selling out theaters everywhere they go and will probably be playing arenas within the year. why so upset by p4k's scorn? it's Trumpian to me, doing air quotes every time she says "article" or "review," as if they're fake. she says there's a difference between expressing an opinion and "just bashing"... uh, no there isn't, a harsh opinion is still an opinion.
― flappy bird, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 22:15 (seven years ago)
seems kinda needlessly mean to link to a video of someone's onstage breakdown in the middle of what's already a sharply negative review of their new album

― princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 November 2018 11:32 (seven years ago)
the opening riff from one of the singles was a dead ringer for "fly away" so I assume the album's probably not so hot, but still
― wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Thursday, 1 November 2018 11:33 (seven years ago)
and yeah that seems revisionist
the album is very good, this review is not
