the clean version is butchery

I’m still laughing about “Yilbert”

El Tomboto, Monday, 1 October 2018 20:01 (five years ago) link

/ymmv but it doesn't strike me as any different than rockstars posturing or destroying their gear, the spectacle is fun. artists don't have to be moral leaders/

No, they don't. But when they *declare themselves to be moral leaders* they're open to criticism as such. And West is attempting to declare himself a moral/philosophical leader - at one point he was planning to turn his tweets into a self-help book, remember? So it's perfectly OK to point out that his political philosophies are bullshit and that he seems like a dude who's genuinely fucked in the head and has no idea how to read a room or really to relate to anyone but himself, in a way that you wouldn't do with, say, Thom Yorke.

Yeah I already said I don’t fuck with what he’s doing now. Also remembered “BILL COSBY INNOCENT” merch at the Pablo MSG launch. I don’t remember stars and bars at the Yeezus show I went to, could be wrong, but that era, that’s the spectacle I’m talking about. And yeah I don’t see how long rambling narcissistic diatribes about how “this shit is like, well thought out” is different than what Corgan did at Lollapalooza 1994 and in the Silverfuck jams (which were often very brutal!). Again ymmv w/ Billy obviously but I know you’re a fan, LBI.

flappy bird, Monday, 1 October 2018 21:03 (five years ago) link

maybe you should wonder why you're giving a pass to/supporting tinfoil hat right-wing conspiracy theorist jerk narcissists

Οὖτις, Monday, 1 October 2018 22:12 (five years ago) link

esp when it's right there front and center in their work

Οὖτις, Monday, 1 October 2018 22:13 (five years ago) link

I'm really looking forward the meeting of Kanye West and Jordan Peterson. That's a collision bound to happen.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 1 October 2018 22:25 (five years ago) link

I never defended Corgan or Kanye's right wing rants, Shakey. I defended delusional narcissism in service of great rock spectacle. Kanye wasn't right wing in 2014, and Corgan was completely apolitical until like 6 years ago. like I said YMMV with that kind of energy from a performer!

flappy bird, Monday, 1 October 2018 22:59 (five years ago) link

it's true, I have no use for dragon energy

Οὖτις, Monday, 1 October 2018 23:00 (five years ago) link

yes. we both know that. we know that I like it. I ain't right wing tho!

flappy bird, Monday, 1 October 2018 23:02 (five years ago) link

although I do have two wings...

flappy bird, Monday, 1 October 2018 23:02 (five years ago) link

what other delusional narcissists do you find fascinating

Οὖτις, Monday, 1 October 2018 23:05 (five years ago) link

That's a good question...

flappy bird, Monday, 1 October 2018 23:16 (five years ago) link

I'm actually looking at my records & books & movies and drawing a blank. Lots of one or the other but not both. PKD maybe.

flappy bird, Monday, 1 October 2018 23:18 (five years ago) link

I don’t understand what condemning kanye will accomplish.

Trϵϵship, Monday, 1 October 2018 23:20 (five years ago) link

he's one of the most famous musicians alive and he's supporting Trump with very little information or understanding or context. he should stop. being pissed at him might work

flappy bird, Monday, 1 October 2018 23:22 (five years ago) link

Maybe. Seems like he has become more of a joke than a dangerous pro trump voice.

Trϵϵship, Monday, 1 October 2018 23:23 (five years ago) link

PKD was def delusional but I don't think he was a narcissist

fwiw

Οὖτις, Monday, 1 October 2018 23:24 (five years ago) link

I dont think kanye is a narcissist

He seems really contrite whenever he is confronted eith the fact that his outbursts hurt someone else. By all reports he truly loves his family even though most of us see kim kardashian as some kind of human metaphor; her getting robbed precipitated his breakdown last year. I think he’s a guy with manic tendencies that in the past fueled creative work but have now taken him to a dark place and i just can’t look at this and shrug him off as an oportunist. For one the antics don’t seem to be helping his brand.

Trϵϵship, Monday, 1 October 2018 23:28 (five years ago) link

PKD is the only one that made me stop and think about it. even with the Exegesis & info from the few bios I've read, still don't really think so.

flappy bird, Monday, 1 October 2018 23:28 (five years ago) link

Kanye is wielding his dragon energy irresponsibly

flappy bird, Monday, 1 October 2018 23:29 (five years ago) link

I care to the extent that he has made music i connecred with at an impressionable age. Don’t like seeing him all incoherent and making himself a pariah. Of the things that i care about, it’s number 10,000 or something but it’s the thread topic.

Trϵϵship, Monday, 1 October 2018 23:29 (five years ago) link

We should lock the thread tho bc i am no longer enjoying sharing unpopular opinions

Trϵϵship, Monday, 1 October 2018 23:33 (five years ago) link

Him being an eccentric and him having mental illness are different things.

are they? these seem to be the dots you are failing to connect

k3vin k., Monday, 1 October 2018 23:35 (five years ago) link

I think it’s tough with bipolar bc mania is known to fuel creative work but it is a double edged sword. I don’t have bioolar so i can’t speak that eloquently about it. Also I am graduating from this thread.

Trϵϵship, Monday, 1 October 2018 23:37 (five years ago) link

I posted this on my FB wall earlier tonight, though I'm well aware that nobody really cares.

"There is something alluring about a car wreck; I know. And there is an impulse or magnetism to gawk at famous people who do and say upsetting things.

Our president is one of them. I would argue that we've gotta pay attention to him, even if we don't want to. Until he is no longer president, we're stuck.

There is another very famous person, an American rapper turned pop star, who - particularly in recent years - has gotten more mileage out of being a public jackass than for his music.

Some people enjoy the show, and make a point of defending him. If you're one of those people, this post isn't for you.

If you are tired of this person I'm pointedly not naming - as I am - can I make a suggestion? Turn away. Focus on other things. And most meaningfully, stop clicking on links to stories (that aren't really stories) about him.

Just don't do it.

The less you click, the less of a commodity he continues to be for so many outlets at the expense of more deserving artists of all genres - and the better the chance that he pursues a long, quiet period of reflection and the professional help he desperately needs."

There’s nothing more maddening than debating someone who doesn’t know history, doesn’t read books, and frames their myopia as virtue. The level of unapologetic conjecture I’ve encountered lately isn’t just frustrating, it’s retrogressive, unprecedented and absolutely terrifying. https://t.co/4jCFwB4T5U

Let's face it, Captain America vs. Kanye was the third act that 2018 needed.

Drake's account of what went down w/the Wyoming situations, Pusha-T's diss and everything on Lebron's new HBO show was pretty damning of Kanye, he's a manipulative little shit

Drake's account of what went down w/the Wyoming situations, Pusha-T's diss and everything on Lebron's new HBO show was pretty damning of Kanye, he's a manipulative little shit

didn't see the show but the recap on Stereogum certainly makes a good case for Kanye being a shit and Drake being sensible https://www.stereogum.com/2018640/drake-says-he-shelved-a-pusha-t-response-track/news/

but then of course the last paragraph has me rmde:

At his show in Los Angeles last night, as Pitchfork reports, Drake brought Chris Brown to the stage as a special guest. “I want to share this moment with y’all tonight. This is something I waited a long time for. I got the utmost respect — I think this guy’s one of the most talented human beings on the planet,” he said before Brown performed “Party.” “I never really got my chance to show him. So I figured tonight — in Staples Center, with each and every one of y’all — it would be the perfect time to share this moment.”
