it should be out in the US at midnight
it's basically a full length TOTEP in sound which is exactly what i wanted
― ufo, Monday, 1 October 2018 00:34 (seven years ago)
this is a v nice album, although i maybe slightly preferred TOTEP, pound-for-pound. that's nitpicking though. this really is lovely

The whole of the second half is stupidly good.
― Jeff W, Monday, 1 October 2018 18:57 (seven years ago)
great stuff, visiting hours personal fav on first listen
bit saint etienne-y to me
― nxd, Tuesday, 2 October 2018 09:03 (seven years ago)
fantastic album. almost wish they hadn't split the material into two releases but that's a nitpick.
― wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 11:20 (seven years ago)
I listened to Intro Bonito a while back and thought it was terrible. But lots of people seem to like this band who also like things I like. Is that unrepresentative or do I just have bad taste in music?
― Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 2 October 2018 11:24 (seven years ago)
Their style has changed a lot since then. I like both old and new KKB, but basically the new LP seems to have gotten the PC music sceptics on-board as it has moved away from that sound. So if that sounds like you then maybe give it a go?
― mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 11:28 (seven years ago)
New one is much better and I'm a PC Music fan
― imago, Tuesday, 2 October 2018 11:37 (seven years ago)
this album barely resembles Intro Bonito (which i agree is pretty bad). Bonito Generation was definitely a step up though still a bit underwritten but it's this year that they've really come into their own
also Flamingo has 21 million youtube views, when did that happen wtf
― ufo, Tuesday, 2 October 2018 12:16 (seven years ago)
Would suggest that anyone more into their earlier stuff check out the Kane West LP as it features 2/3 members and is probably better than Intro Bonito
― mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 12:21 (seven years ago)
It's not just musically they've developed. Sarah has turned into an amazing lyricist seemingly overnight.
btw there will be physical editions of the album, but not shipping until mid December according to this:https://www.polyvinylrecords.com/product/time_n_place
But do scroll down and read the full press blurb - very insightful for once.

That didn't work :(
It's a guy (ID: acai) playing guitar hero version. He seems to be pretty popular.
― daavid, Tuesday, 2 October 2018 17:37 (seven years ago)
xxp the press blurb is very interesting, thanks for the link. completely agree that sarah's lyrics are really fantastic on this album
i'm definitely going to try to find a tracklist that coherently combines TOTEP with Time 'n' Place, it shouldn't be too hard to fit
― ufo, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 04:28 (seven years ago)
I mean you can be pretty free with it, almost every track is so self-contained and ends with a sudden whoosh of noise
― wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 3 October 2018 04:43 (seven years ago)
Saw them last night in Brighton. A very charming gig with most of the audience singing along. Would like to see them again in a year if they keep gigging to see a tighter performance.

Saw these guys in Atlanta last night and it was the most fun I've had at a show in years. The crowd was super hyped and you could tell the band were really feeding off their energy. I thought they did a great job of re-working the old songs in the live band format. Go see them if you have the chance.
― woman in the dunes, Wednesday, 24 October 2018 14:21 (seven years ago)
I had slept on Time 'n Place until this week but wow, what a fantastic record. It's very melancholy--I'm hearing a valiant struggle to stay positive in the face of existential boredom and/or tragedy. There are also so many gorgeous melodies and textures throughout, like in the bridge to Time Today, which might be my favorite bit of music from last year.
Does anyone else get Trish Keenan vibes from Sarah's vocals? To me, they both share a kind of wistful British stoicism, though both bands obviously come from different places aesthetically.

Pleased that they seem to have got the RAAAWWK out of their system. The EP still has the odd noisy moment, but it's all synth-led. It's a bit prog in places actually! I particularly like "Battle Lines".
― Jeff W, Monday, 7 October 2019 13:13 (six years ago)
I didn't know what the hell they were going to do next.... this whole EP is very fun... in a new way

Loving "The River"!
― daavid, Monday, 7 October 2019 18:19 (six years ago)
Is raaawwk still more or less what they're doing as a touring act? I was thinking of seeing them when they come through Minneapolis.

civilisation ii ep out in april. this single is fine but not really on the level of their 2018 material which is how i feel about the first civilisation ep these days
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9__MSNKRTtY
also found they were regularly covering u2's "vertigo" on their last tour lol. about as deliberately an uncool song as possible which i guess was the point

this is a good read about the making of time 'n' place
― ufo, Wednesday, 24 February 2021 09:02 (five years ago)
xp nice, finally! I can't say I'm any less psyched for Civ II than I was a couple years ago. As much as I'd love them to keep exploring the introspective sugary noise-pop of Time 'n' Place (probably my favorite album of the past five years, period), I think this electronic post-apocalyptic world-building thing they're doing now is a brilliant way for them to evolve. I love that they're an "eras" band that completely switches things up sonically and conceptually from album cycle to ablum cycle, which is something I associate more with art-pop "auteurs" like Björk and PJ Harvey than bands like KKB
― J. Sam, Wednesday, 24 February 2021 13:08 (five years ago)
they say in that twitter thread that the concept behind the civ eps is keeping things entirely hardware-based which is a continuation of what they did on time 'n' place, except that they're not working in the band format they did there. the results so far have been decently interesting, probably their most overtly video game soundtrack-esque music, but i don't love it as much as time 'n' place and totep.
― ufo, Wednesday, 24 February 2021 13:19 (five years ago)
i guess i like the sound of the civ stuff but the songwriting hasn't grabbed me anywhere near as much as what they were doing in 2018
― ufo, Wednesday, 24 February 2021 13:24 (five years ago)
Yeah musically the Civ stuff didn't appeal to me as immediately as the Time 'n' Place era stuff, but it's grown on me hard. The production is more sophisticated and darker than anything else they've done (though the video game music timbres help maintain a whimsical aura), and the way the lyrical focus has shifted from the personal to sci-fi/fantasy storytelling is really cool.
― J. Sam, Wednesday, 24 February 2021 14:07 (five years ago)
Man I love the new song already. Freestyle-ish beat, lush melancholy synths, wispy chopped-up vocals: yes, please

A young man of taste he is. Civilisation II EP is out today, absolutely slays as expected. "Well Rested" is a legit 7-minute deep house odyssey
― J. Sam, Wednesday, 21 April 2021 14:43 (five years ago)
A young man walking the one true path. Yeah this new one's great
― maf you one two (maffew12), Wednesday, 21 April 2021 15:09 (five years ago)
This does sound like video game music, in a way I can't appreciate or enjoy. And why are their tunes so aimless now, when they used to be all about catchy melodies (to the point that they had a song about how great they are)?
This band is clearly going places artistically, but they left me behind a while back. Oh well
