Just heard this for the first time and I love it! It's the song Sky was born to cover. As much as I love the Till Tuesday version (and I really do!), I think Sky's vocals are superior Aimee's.

Also that bass is amazing! I don't have high hopes but it'd be great if they polished it a little bit and it became a proper release.

daavid, Tuesday, 25 September 2018 07:59 (seven years ago)

*superior to Aimee's

two weeks pass...

How did this cover become my favorite track of 2018? There's been a lot of good music this year but I keep coming back to this. Where's the fookin ablum?

Cousin Slappy, Monday, 15 October 2018 15:57 (seven years ago)

Mine too!

daavid, Monday, 15 October 2018 18:47 (seven years ago)

not getting my hopes up yet but maybe this means new music in the coming months...?

I’m releasing music this month 🥴 (for real)

The first song isn’t a pop song...because I really want to make a video for it (& I love it). I’m confident about all of the pop songs on my record so I decided to start with something different. 🤠

a date! with the month and year specified!

dyl, Friday, 22 March 2019 01:32 (seven years ago)

I think this is just a single, no? Either way, yes!

Johnny Fever, Friday, 22 March 2019 02:33 (seven years ago)

I'm stoked thinking there'll be a Sky Ferreira album released in 2019. I avoid singles like I avoid movie trailers, but can't wait!

SKY FERREIRA RETURNS: THE MASOCHISM INTERVIEW

With an uncompromising vision and the studio hours to back it up, the enigmatic singer is back with a new single—and a promise that her first album in six years will be worth the wait.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 26 March 2019 20:40 (seven years ago)

Additionally, Sky is even more particular about her final mixes. She will only be satisfied after she’s evaluated her song in seven different listening contexts: a car stereo; a smartphone with “regular” headphones; a smartphone with Apple earbuds; a smartphone’s built-in speaker; on a laptop; through “really bad, bad computer speakers—like the ones that came with Dells back in the early 2000s”; and the lush splendor of the studio, which is a personal luxury because, as she notes, “most people aren’t gonna listen that way.”

lmao iconic

Smart move

flappy bird, Tuesday, 26 March 2019 23:59 (seven years ago)

So new song, pretty different, more of a dirge than a pop smash.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 14:02 (seven years ago)

reminds me of kym brown/pj harvey or ema on their ballads/carina round/that whole entire swath of things I like, plus even more strings

(also the song lana del rey has attempted but failed to make for almost a decade)

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 14:04 (seven years ago)

Idk, this is a decent grunge ballad, but the last three singles LDR released are all way better.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 14:13 (seven years ago)

I completely disagree with that on a few levels but this does fucking rule xp

Simon H., Wednesday, 27 March 2019 14:13 (seven years ago)

it's totally free of irony/distancing for starters (AFAICT on first listen)

Simon H., Wednesday, 27 March 2019 14:15 (seven years ago)

actually the vibe on this one is downright Dulli-esque

Simon H., Wednesday, 27 March 2019 14:20 (seven years ago)

i don't see why ldr needed to be brought up in either a negative or positive capacity

here i posted the song

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 14:24 (seven years ago)

I don't see how it's an invalid comparison to compare a purposefully dirge-y ballad with a prominent string arrangement to the work of an artist who primarily records purposefully dirge-y ballads with prominent string arrangements

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 14:31 (seven years ago)

ok you got me, i just dislike it when anyone praises a song with a negative comparison

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 14:37 (seven years ago)

kim gordon vibes

that's basically how everyone who's mixed a song in the past 30 years works.

fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 27 March 2019 15:29 (seven years ago)

I'd guess the distinction there is that she's doing it (but also I've heard mixers hate artists who do this kind of thing)

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 15:46 (seven years ago)

("this kind of thing" = being particular and/or perfectionist about the final mix)

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 15:46 (seven years ago)

Strange to read about the whole perfectionism thing when the new track is sounding a lot like a demo to me. Like, the vocals seem lost in in the mix? I'm not a fan, TBH. Maybe my expectations were a little too high after Voices Carry, which sounds like a million times better than this.

daavid, Wednesday, 27 March 2019 15:51 (seven years ago)

Every engineer I've ever worked with recommended listening to mixes on a range of speakers.

This sounds much more polished than Voices Carry, but definitely has some deliberately dry sounding drums and vocals that maybe make it sound a bit rougher.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 15:58 (seven years ago)

Stunning song.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 27 March 2019 16:59 (seven years ago)

oh, I mean, every engineer I've worked with listens to mixes on a range of speakers, I'm just struck by the disparity between how fans/music journalists view artists who do dozens/hundreds of takes (very positively) and how engineers do (very negatively)

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 17:01 (seven years ago)

(I land on the "very positively" side myself)

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 17:01 (seven years ago)

I suspect the more established the artist and bigger the recording budget, the more positively inclined an engineer might be.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 17:03 (seven years ago)

The more money you have the more you can obsess and unmix tracks by too much tweaking

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 17:19 (seven years ago)

The bass guitar sound on this probably links it more the my old 4AD favorites than it likely would otherwise, but I'm ok with being microtargeted.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 27 March 2019 17:28 (seven years ago)

Interesting, it reminds me of the bass tone on "Come As You Are".

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 17:37 (seven years ago)

I did not enjoy this :(

L'assie (Euler), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 17:50 (seven years ago)

I was wondering why everywhere said this sampled bittersweet symphony despite it... not

It doesn’t have anything to do with the Verve’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony.” It’s completely unrelated. I was JOKING!What a mess. Please take it out if written & out of your brains. I spent so much time recording/writing/arranging it & having people play it. It’s completely original.

nothing is complete original, hasn't she read harold bloom?

affects breves telnet (Gummy Gummy), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 20:20 (seven years ago)

Great song. Love that she worked with Dean Hurley on this (whose Anthology Resource was quietly the best musical thing that came out of the Twin Peaks reboot).
