yeah, friends, tot cool... (and my first on this board, I might add).

Yeah, I asked around and not many people could figure out why the Pipettes-- love em or hate em-- were on the bill with Amy. (I still haven't had a chance to check her out but I will definitely stick around to see her on your say-so).

The Pipettes have added 2 headlining gigs in the area since this one was booked, so those will probably be better for gettin your polka dot on anyway.

So, Back to Black was released here today, and they took "Addicted" off the record and put that Ghostface remix of "No Good"on instead. WHY?!? Ghostface is basically just screaming over the track, he's totally off beat.

Just saw her video on MTV this morning and been reading about her. She kinda sounded like Shirley Bassey in the video (that's good). The rhythm track was not that unique--standard retro samples--I had read real nice stuff about the production, but am not impressed (yet ?).

I thought the US release was going to keep "Addicted" and add the acoustic take of "Love is a Losing Game." Either way, it's better than the Canadian version.. or at least the promos they sent out. Mine just has "Addicted" lopped off and it's just ten tracks long without anything else added.

Jazz singer Amy Winehouse is leading the field for the Mojo awards with three nominations including song and album of the year.

Winehouse, who was named best British female artist at the Brit Awards earlier this year, is followed by the Arctic Monkeys with two nods.

The Sheffield band are shortlisted for best song and best live act, where they face veteran rock group The Who.

Bob Dylan's US chart topper Modern Times is in the running for best album.

'Sky the limit'

Reader of Mojo magazine and users of their website handed two nominations to Texas rock group Midlake, in the best album and breakthrough act categories.

Other nominees in the song of the year category are The Gossip for Standing In The Way of Control and Scottish band The View for Same Jeans.

Singer Johnny Cash is posthumously nominated for catalogue release of the year, for the reissue of his 1969 concert at San Quentin.

This is his second nomination in a row in the category, while he gained two further nods in last year's shortlist.

The Mojo awards ceremony will take place in London on 18 June, at which the magazine will bestow a number of honours including the Hall of Fame and lifetime achievement awards.

Mojo-approved, it figures - about as close to modern r&b as they'd get, I assume.

"Rehab" is an ok novelty one-off, but Winehouse is otherwise loathsome, retreading the hoariest soul/lounge clichés. I'm genuinely mystifed that Lex is on this one.

It's the Cleo Laine comparison that puzzles me. Other than moderately bizarre hair they have nothing in common.

Marsh is right on with "clumsy pastiche," but he comes off a little clumsy himself with that strained comparison to Bettye Lavette (stupid to take it out on Winehouse because radio doesn't usually play new music by really old people). He's expressed in the not-too-distant past a fondness for r&b of the Aaliyah/Whitney/Mary J. stripe, so he'd have been smarter to draw a comparsion that way, I think. (Then again, is it in r&b circles that Winehouse is getting noticed? Or is she more an "alternative" thing here?)

A critic in a local weekly just drew a comparison between Winehouse and "American Idol"--not one particular vocalist, of course, but the entire idea of it. His point, I believe, was that, finally, here's someone who can really belt it out! I think that was his point; I kind of saw it coming, so I didn't finish the paragraph.

As for Marsh's comments, I can also see him now after reading about Winehouse using the Dapkings as her backing band, saying "Hmmmm, Sharon Jones, older-African-American woman backed by the DapKings gets only alt-indie attention while Brit white woman gets major label support, video in rotation, and plays big festivals."

three weeks pass...

'Back to Black' just gets better despite it being inescapable.
I can't think of a time before when someone went from being a niche artist to being a massive star in this country purely because of the damn brilliance of one specific album. I mean i'm sure this must have happened before.

With all that's going on at the moment in tabloid-world i feel sorry for her, and i really hope she wins the Mercury prize just to show the lot of them.

And the fucking remixes of the singles have been brilliant, almost as good overall as Justin's last year.
