ok so it's definitely "dream fighter" but also..... is it????? what about "chocolate disco"? the (i think) underestimated "twinkle snow powdery snow"??? "nee"???? "spice"?????????

Turning down Laser Beam or Chocolate Disco seems ridiculous but for me it's Spring of Life. No joy compares to its breakdown + synth harpsichord solo, even before adding in the video and its pixel hearts bursting into life.

It's gonna be hard for me not to vote for "Spending All My Time" just for its amazingly creepy video:

So difficult to pick just one, but went for Laser Beam. Although if this song had been released as a single it would have walked it for me:

the synth bass in "dream fighter" is the truth

if this counted as a single i would've picked it without hesitation

i'm very confident i'll end up voting for Polyrhythm which is one of the most thrilling songs ever to me. it starts out as a merely great pop song then the breakdown is really unparalleled, and the way it emerges back out of it! there is so much going on in that song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbiSxunJatM
dream fighter is a close second though
shout out to Kazuaki Seki who has directed nearly all their incredible videos too

The demo version of Polyrhythm that sneaked out onto Youtube is quite illuminating on the difference between something goood and something great:

for me the breakdown of "polyrhythm" is like... in the top five things that have ever happened in music
every time i listen to it is like the first time

that final measure of the "one room disco" chorus where they don't sing and there's just that twinkling synth

Haven't heard about half of these but "Natural ni Koishite" is one of the best songs ever so
(which reminds me that I should listen to the unheard half)

it was technically the b-side of "voice" iirc

Not voting for anything off it here, but Complete Best compilation is underrated as a Perfume album, 10/10.
Also since you added FLASH you should've added Let Me Know, what wiki calls promotional singles, ie digital singles.
― abcfsk, Saturday, 22 September 2018 21:19 (five years ago) link
ah i see. tbf almost every song on that album is good/memorable enough to be a single
― dyl, Saturday, 22 September 2018 21:19 (five years ago) link
xp
A lot of these I'm not familiar with but it'll be tough to find anything that beats Polyrhythm

otm even though it had 30 singles released from it already i kinda wish “my color” at least had a video
― princess of hell (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 September 2018 22:28 (five years ago) link
it was a little hard to figure out where to draw the line with what counts as a single so i mostly kept it to ones that had separate digital releases - Flash does but Let Me Know doesn't for some reason.

It's amazing how many different ways this sound managed to manifest itself. A huge portion of this decade comes off as reactions to the sounds of Perfume and Nakata in their prime.
Voting Fushizen na Girl.

It's amazing the songs that get buried away on b-sides or EPs, this is better than most of the Cosmic Explorer album:

I voted 'Spice', but almost any of the songs would be OK with me winning. First time I saw Perfume live they opened with Electro World and I cried.
Spice is just total lush beauty, melancholy, comfort all in one. It was an amazing single with b-side GLITTER. Their new song "Future Pop" (not official single but with its own MV) reminds me a bit of that groove.

this is a version of 'polyrhythm' I made which goes for one extra repetition of the breakdown, using the single & the instrumental version. dj secret weapon.

"spice" is the first song i heard by perfume that really got me to notice them and seek out more of their music. i think i had heard "polyrhythm" before but didn't figure out who the group was at the time. these days i prefer "polyrhythm" so i guess that'll be my vote!
― dyl, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 02:02 (five years ago) link
yep. esp this tokyo dome live ver which is just... unbelievable:
https://youtu.be/XzQvlKzDTz8
mmm hmm. maybe weirdly their most consistent record? I like every song on there a lot and love the way it feels a little more shibuya kei.
"sweet donuts" RULES too tbh and I love the low budget video where they're hanging out in a break room and baking, esp in contrast to the sci-fi epics they do now.
I'd vote "my color" if it were on here. since it isn't, tough choice between "electro world," "chocolate disco," "polyrhythm," and "dream fighter" for me.
hmmm.
