When It Comes to Music and Beer, Hop Along Won't Be Easily Defined

triggercut, Saturday, 22 September 2018 02:31 (seven years ago)

Simply hate when people incorrectly define me When It Comes to Beer.

triggercut, Saturday, 22 September 2018 02:32 (seven years ago)

I once cut a guy for mistakenly thinking I prefer Mosaic hops to Cascade hops.

The Swedish producer takes the long view on his fifth album

sixth album

their review of the new Orbital album demonstrates something I've always disliked about Pitchfork, their tendency to canonize their old reviews and treat them as though they were all written by the same person

it's probably a concious decision to preserve integrity of their existing base of critique, but yeah, being forced to contextualize a release in accordance with the assertions of totally different review can definitely undermine the authors freedom to build a coherent narrative of his or her own.

This blessed collection of unreleased demos, recorded by Prince to cassette in a single take, is enthralling.

groovemaaan, Tuesday, 25 September 2018 13:15 (seven years ago)

I know one person who wouldn't be blessing it

Number None, Tuesday, 25 September 2018 15:45 (seven years ago)

I thought it was a solid review.

The Silky Veils of Alfred (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 25 September 2018 19:28 (seven years ago)

It is well written (with maybe a few overreaching metaphors).

growing up in publix (morrisp), Tuesday, 25 September 2018 20:52 (seven years ago)

I love this image: "When some musicians die, their record company grasps for whatever material remains, like a medieval saint parceled out into increasingly meager relics."

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 06:48 (seven years ago)

OK, trying again: JP is a great writer but this piece sucks: https://pitchfork.com/features/article/reckoning-with-pinegrove/

flappy bird, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 21:28 (seven years ago)

It's not only the insanely bad timing w/r/t current events, it's that they buried the lede that Pinegrove's shelved record is suddenly coming out in 2 days. Piece itself is bizarre though and shouldn't have been published as is. But ya know $$$

flappy bird, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 21:31 (seven years ago)

Not really having known anything about that band or that dude's statement, I thought it was fascinating.

in twelve parts (lamonti), Thursday, 27 September 2018 06:28 (seven years ago)

the replies to her tweet with the story are all dudes being like "great piece, i love this band!" and everyone else being "you are trash you rape apologist"

in twelve parts (lamonti), Thursday, 27 September 2018 06:34 (seven years ago)

that's why it's so disingenuous and shameful that they published. it's a new 'narrative' for the band and a way forward. I get the band's position and their PR strategy, but anyone that plays along fucking sucks

flappy bird, Thursday, 27 September 2018 06:42 (seven years ago)

burying the lede on the album release is sly for sure.

also i assume dude is independently wealthy considering he had a year to sit around thinking about what he'd done.

this live album of songs about death allows listeners to revisit their private grief

where do I sign

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 1 October 2018 19:44 (seven years ago)

two weeks pass...

“boygenius Are the Egoless Supergroup of Your Indie Rock Dreams”

And then in the Pitchfork email update

“boygenius is your new favorite supergroup”

Love when media tells me exactly how I feel about things.

triggercut, Friday, 19 October 2018 02:33 (seven years ago)

yeah that's bad writing

gotta admit though... it is probably my new fav supergroup

niels, Friday, 19 October 2018 06:26 (seven years ago)

nope. wont be listening to that.

jmm, Monday, 22 October 2018 16:26 (seven years ago)

would be nice if they were as interested in asking musicians what they listen to as they are with tv actors

devvvine, Monday, 22 October 2018 16:42 (seven years ago)

this beer shit is beyond parody though, like do even people into craft beer care about this?

I stumbled on this 2003 review last night and good lord: https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/4277-what-was-me/

Cool Courtneys interview. I didn't realize they live in different cities (one of them in France!)

I also didn't realize the guitarist is named "Courtney Loove" (which is obviously f'in awesome)

I just discovered recently (when Snail Mail covered one of their songs) that there was also a band on K Records named Courtney Love:

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Tuesday, 23 October 2018 14:50 (seven years ago)

damn that's an old-school pitchfork review

never heard a note by these guys but judging by the Zep-obsessed dorks who won't shut up about them I figure this is pretty damn accurate

frogbs, Tuesday, 23 October 2018 14:53 (seven years ago)

It's also being discussed in the 'What Is Rockism?' thread.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 23 October 2018 14:59 (seven years ago)

it is a throwback to old style p4k but GVF is such an easy target

flappy bird, Tuesday, 23 October 2018 16:40 (seven years ago)

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Thursday, 25 October 2018 13:59 (seven years ago)

if you were an incoming freshman in 2005 who put “everything but rap and country” on your Facebook profile, there was another website growing in popularity that year that covered everything: Pitchfork Media.

I’m being unfair. Pitchfork did cover rap once in a while, but that was new at the time.

yeah they weren't as rap-focused in 2005 as they are now, but there are more than 300 pre-2006 hip hop reviews in the archives, so "once in a while" is also also unfair.

President Keyes, Thursday, 25 October 2018 14:41 (seven years ago)

I mean they also didn’t cover a lot of metal or punk unless it was hipster contingent stuff.
