By that standard there are other albums that should be way up there. Right?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 September 2018 13:35 (seven years ago)

It's clearly an important record, I just don't like it that much as a record. But obviously others do!

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 September 2018 13:36 (seven years ago)

It's that high because it placed on just about every submitted list.

The Silky Veils of Alfred (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 10 September 2018 13:37 (seven years ago)

weirdest thing about the list to me is The Sensual World placing but not The Dreaming

ufo, Monday, 10 September 2018 13:38 (seven years ago)

if you’re listening for just the songs from thriller in toto* you’re missing a lot of the reason it’s still regarded so highly. the pyt sample on kanye’s “good life,” etc

* lol no pun intended

maura, Monday, 10 September 2018 13:38 (seven years ago)

Wait for it...

5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 10 September 2018 13:38 (seven years ago)

are there any 9/11 references in this list or no

marcos, Monday, 10 September 2018 13:40 (seven years ago)

Love seeing Tango in the Night

Yes! That's one of my favorite reevaluations.

Yeah, this is weird.

agreed, The Dreaming is sort of the Kate fan's Kate record in so many ways

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 10 September 2018 14:01 (seven years ago)

fourth'd but also not mad that my favorite kate record made it

I feel like "This Woman's Work" has been having a bit of a moment over the last couple of years

Might be a factor

Number None, Monday, 10 September 2018 14:05 (seven years ago)

do you mean eighteen years?

The Silky Veils of Alfred (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 10 September 2018 14:06 (seven years ago)

Culturally, like

Obviously it's a masterpiece

Number None, Monday, 10 September 2018 14:07 (seven years ago)

I listened to Minor Threat this weekend. No idea why anyone thinks it should be that high.

President Keyes, Monday, 10 September 2018 14:08 (seven years ago)

Yeah, I'd say that's another good case of "important" vs. good.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 September 2018 14:14 (seven years ago)

There should just be a list of "angriest albums of the '80s."

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 September 2018 14:15 (seven years ago)

"this woman's work" is always having a moment

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 10 September 2018 14:16 (seven years ago)

Can’t load this thread to see if anyone’s said this already but they did this one already in 2002. The list is still up.

piscesx, Monday, 10 September 2018 14:17 (seven years ago)

i think a lot of that is prob due to the aftershock of the maxwell cover which also still seems to be relevant and beloved xp

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 10 September 2018 14:18 (seven years ago)

You underestimate ILM.

this is partially my fault

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Monday, 10 September 2018 14:22 (seven years ago)

Also, what do you think are the reasons for the decline in Tom Waits stock? Rain Dogs down to 42, and Swordfishtrombone gone completely.

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Monday, 10 September 2018 14:23 (seven years ago)

lol just saw the bottom of the list described as "a bunch of dance and dance-adjacent acts that they let brad nelson write about"

lowercase (eric), Monday, 10 September 2018 14:23 (seven years ago)

(I failed to vote for a lot of things I would have voted for)

what's upppp

wish i had gotten the virgo blurb tbh

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 10 September 2018 14:25 (seven years ago)

Also, what do you think are the reasons for the decline in Tom Waits stock?

The Best Show, maybe?

President Keyes, Monday, 10 September 2018 14:25 (seven years ago)

i've notice a pretty big tom waits backlash in the last couple years

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 10 September 2018 14:28 (seven years ago)

Yeah Tom Waits coolness stock is way down right now as far as I can see

Evan, Monday, 10 September 2018 14:29 (seven years ago)

Nice to see Music For The Masses sneak in a list for once.

Hounds Of Love was 92 lol in the previous 80s list.

piscesx, Monday, 10 September 2018 14:30 (seven years ago)

Hey, Don't Break the Oath got in. Guess I can't complain too much.

jmm, Monday, 10 September 2018 14:31 (seven years ago)

you know, I hate to nitpick, but goddamnit, the B-52's led the way for REM, not "alongside".

campreverb, Monday, 10 September 2018 14:31 (seven years ago)

it's all been downhill for waits since he had a song on the shrek 2 soundtrack

bitch that’s the tubby custard machine (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 10 September 2018 14:32 (seven years ago)

How come everyone outside of ILM thinks Blue Bell Knoll is the best 80s Cocteaus album? I honestly though we'd seen the back of such nonsense.

piscesx, Monday, 10 September 2018 14:33 (seven years ago)

part of it might be too that people caught on to waits essentially doing the exact same thing for 30 years

i was thrilled that all four of the metal records i voted for made it in (oath, to mega therion, altars of madness, streetcleaner)

Yeah! Think it's the first Danish album to ever show up on one of these lists. Anne Linnet still got robbed, though.

Frederik B, Monday, 10 September 2018 14:34 (seven years ago)

xxp Blue Bell Knoll is the best CT album fyi

(best ct album still being debated as of last week on here, on some other thread)

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 10 September 2018 14:34 (seven years ago)

it's sort of shocking that Cocteau Twins and Kate Bush had that little indie rock coolness stock back in 2002 for Treasure and Hounds of Love to barely make the list then

ufo, Monday, 10 September 2018 14:37 (seven years ago)

biggest omission for me is lexicon of love

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 10 September 2018 14:39 (seven years ago)

and dare

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 10 September 2018 14:41 (seven years ago)

no chic? was hoping real people wld make it

lowercase (eric), Monday, 10 September 2018 14:44 (seven years ago)

I'm annoyed I wasn't asked cuz Dare would've been in my ten and I would've big upped The Glow of Love

The Silky Veils of Alfred (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 10 September 2018 14:45 (seven years ago)

biggest omission for me is lexicon of love

or Golden Age of Wireless.
kind of starting to think classic new wave/synth-pop is a problem for the current generation of writers, especially given similar omissions on the singles list.

campreverb, Monday, 10 September 2018 14:47 (seven years ago)

okay i will say some of their hip hop picks were the wrong album (BDP should be Criminal Minded not By Any Means) and Straight Outta Compton is way too high for an album that is about half filler

though the half that's not is about as impactful as music gets

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 10 September 2018 14:47 (seven years ago)

No Def Leppard on the list? or did I miss Hysteria or Pyromania?

No Van Halen 1984?

I saw Appetite for Destruction but pop metal was pretty underrepresented for huge that was in the decade

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 10 September 2018 14:48 (seven years ago)

xpost Criminal Minded is #20

President Keyes, Monday, 10 September 2018 14:50 (seven years ago)

no don't be cruel?

maura, Monday, 10 September 2018 14:51 (seven years ago)
