production is indeed nice, but i feel like it seriously lacking in hooks compared to the previous two

First listen was more vibes than hooks, but obviously I think I need to pay close attention to the lyrics. Not sure I'm down with all the spoken word interview interludes, but there weren't many of them, iirc.

his records sound so good though in the summer, it was like 81 and humid at 8am today and this was so pleasant to hear

On Instagram Dev Hynes called the Blood Orange gig I just saw Friday night a "DREAM SHOW IN DC..." Nitpicky me was intermittently impressed with his songcraft,arrangements, guitar playing, & dancing; but (maybe it was the microphone & sound system & not him) at times his voice wasn't strong enough; many songs felt like '90s r'n'b homages but without the hooks, he didn't play the piano enough (which he sounds great on). I feel like he's on the verge of eventually doing something consistently great but he's not quite there yet.

Oh on Instagram, Dev also says he composed a new 75 minute score for a dance piece by the Chicago-based Hubbard Street Dance Company that premiered in Chicago recently. He says it's his "longest classical piece yet." It's a collaboration called "There was Nothing" with impressive Memphis juke dancer Lil Buck Da Legend and Third Coast Percussion.

oh excellent, must listen. truly enjoyed him showing off his gear and his late 80s Manhattan loft in the video for that song.

like most of his albums i feel like the last one features a few really strong songs interspersed with lots of texture and contextual production vibes. always feels a bit uneven, although i really dig the sounds and spaces he creates with them

I really wanna see that dance piece, actually—I'm in Chicago, so I really have no excuse not to (besides like.....lack of funds).

i guess hate is an exaggeration but i’ve never enjoyed his solo work

idk the songwriting feels stronger and less murky and monotonous in tone

I'm with Brad. He's written songs instead of atmospheres without sacrificing the poignancy of those atmospheres.

way more hooks on the previous two. i couldn't really get into this one

find this pleasant sounding but i have pretty much the opposite reaction to alfred. i.e. it's not quite songy enough but there's some nice atmospheres

i found most of those hooks to be p tepid at best & annoyingly condensed at worst (like, that crj song) so i prefer his songwriting stretched out as it is on the new one. still not totally converted yet but

i just love the production throughout... i think it's such a warm palette and fits his songwriting better than arrangements w more structure

yeah i think it earns its digressiony qualities bc the swirls of melody and structure that appear and disappear are, individually, pretty much always commanding and interesting. (imo, again, i found his previous two solo records, despite having more strictly bound "songs," far less imaginative.) it's a pretty filmic record, tracks run into each other like a cut or dissolve between frames. he's less hemmed in rhythmically here too

Lovely. I had started losing interest in him, his work began to sound samey to me. I like how sparse this one is. Am I right in thinking that he usually builds the songs off of loops? Does he ever work with a live drummer?
