honey soundsystem mix on beats in space is raddd. i feel foolish for not having checked out their night at the paradise as of yet
― psychgawsple, Friday, 29 May 2009 17:03 (seventeen years ago)
it's a good party. i don't really like the paradise lounge, but their night is in the upstairs loft, with the downstairs part of the club closed. i think it works better that way. they're def very good djs.
― one time, Friday, 29 May 2009 17:14 (seventeen years ago)
i like the upstairs area there; i think the space has potential but it's a little chintzy too i suppose. sundays are a good night in sf, what with this and sweaterfunk on the same night
― psychgawsple, Friday, 29 May 2009 17:38 (seventeen years ago)
What are Nobunny shows like?
― Trip Maker, Friday, 29 May 2009 17:39 (seventeen years ago)
i don't know how i feel about Honey Soundsystem DJs, but that's because i still harbor suspicions about CDJing, and that is what they tend to do a lot of.
also, though it's a silly sort of complaint, i often want them to play more stuff that i don't know-- it's pretty standard tracks that they rock, albeit in heavily-edited forms.
finally, sometimes the outside DJs that they bring into Paradise Lounge are superbly crappy. sometimes superbly good, but eh...

went to kon and amir last nite. very nice. lots of disco, boogie and latin. i am convinced cool chris (owner of groove merchant)has some of the best records in the western hemisphere. his set was only 30 minutes long but his 7-8 tracks pretty much destroyed what everyone else is playing right now in terms of the whole cosmic, disco, boogie, scene. being the owner of a record store im sure helps.
― oscar, Saturday, 6 June 2009 18:19 (seventeen years ago)
How is the Saturday night "Leisure" thing at Paradise? The descriptors on the flyer are kinda vague. Anyone who's been: What specifically do they play? Good vibe? How crowded, etc.
― DJ Mr. Face Stabba, M.D. (Whitey on the Moon), Saturday, 6 June 2009 18:56 (seventeen years ago)
glad everyone could dig up some great SF bands. i'm glad to call this place home.
― (jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Saturday, 6 June 2009 23:45 (seventeen years ago)
this band- the disappearance of the dwarf planet pluto- plays at my house pretty often (for noise pancakes- we're basically the de facto brutal-sfx headquarters) and is probably my favorite out of the regular acts here. if you check the myspace you'll get a pretty noise-oriented side of things, but they just acquired a crap-ton of expensive equipment and developed a jones for horror-flick synths and as of this morning things sounded pretty fuck'n awesome.
― psychgawsple, Sunday, 7 June 2009 09:25 (seventeen years ago)
clipd beaks is from oakland, no?
― (jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Sunday, 7 June 2009 17:17 (seventeen years ago)
that sounds right. none of these artists are new necessarily but i still enjoy seeing them if they're on a bill or i get the chance...
dominique leonearptusslewooden shjipshospitalsinca oret.i.t.s.ty segall/traditional fools (lots of stuff like this around but i know this dude and he does it well)rubber o cement/caroliner (maybe more b/c of the performance art aspect than the music tho)
at one point i would've said sic alps but they suck live and are ALWAYS complaining about technical difficulties
― psychgawsple, Sunday, 7 June 2009 17:40 (seventeen years ago)
arp/alexis moved to nyc last year...
― mikebee (BATTAGS), Sunday, 7 June 2009 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

― psychgawsple, Monday, 8 June 2009 02:37 (seventeen years ago)

that t.i.t.s record is a lot of fun
― Kitchen Paper Towel (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 8 June 2009 22:07 (seventeen years ago)
i'd love to hear the t.i.t.s. record. or see them live. great from the myspace clips i heard a while back. one of the girls was in Crack: WAR

we're playing sunday 6/14 @ the hemlock w/Odawas (psych-folk, just moved from Chicago) and Wiener Kids (zorn-ish instrumental trio), and 6/19 @ totally intense fractal mindgaze in oakland w/capillary action. come see! my band now is 7-piece, and we play minimalist jungle prog. AND WE DON'T SUCK!!!!! :)
― Dominique, Monday, 8 June 2009 22:28 (seventeen years ago)
xxpost - i guess from the T.I.T.S. myspace you can find a ton of local noize/experimental bands from the bay.
Numbers (they still here?), fuckwolf, the flying luttenbachers, Erase Errata (they still here?), Death Sentence: PANDA! , ezeetiger, xbxrx, TOTAL SHUTDOWN, Hands On Heads, Condor
― (jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Monday, 8 June 2009 22:29 (seventeen years ago)
one of the girls was in Crack: WAR
lolz wow they were horrible. Kinda wish I didn't know that, tbh!
― Kitchen Paper Towel (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 8 June 2009 22:30 (seventeen years ago)
oh Dominique, i'm sorry that one of your shows is with Capillary Action. j0n pfeffer might be the biggest douchebag i've ever met.
― the table is the table, Monday, 8 June 2009 22:34 (seventeen years ago)
he's the sort of guy that used to list EVERY TYPE OF MUSIC EVER MADE IN EVERY COUNTRY AROUND THE WORLD as his favorite music on facebook. silly to take such things so seriously in my case, yes, but especially in his case...he also never credited me for some interviews i did with him back in the day, so he's on my shitlist for real.
― the table is the table, Monday, 8 June 2009 22:38 (seventeen years ago)
u should come to the show and I can arrange foxyboxing to settle the score
― Dominique, Monday, 8 June 2009 23:07 (seventeen years ago)
i liked Crack:WAR and am friends with one of the guys.
― (jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Monday, 8 June 2009 23:12 (seventeen years ago)
although they did have some terrible shows (and some amazing ones), so i can see not liking them
― (jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Monday, 8 June 2009 23:13 (seventeen years ago)
i'll gladly come to the 6/14 show. kind of psyched about it, actually...
― the table is the table, Monday, 8 June 2009 23:17 (seventeen years ago)
what's the cover? for the sunday show?
― space cowboy (san frandisco), Monday, 8 June 2009 23:29 (seventeen years ago)
things I liked recently - GWOC (Ava Mendoza / Weasel Walter / Devin Hoff) - power trio with Ava's totally awesome prog-melodic hyper riffing. 0th's last show that ditched the sloppy rock songs for weird theatre was incredible. Bulbs are always great. haven't seen Oaxacan in a while, they're one of those improv bands that either miss entirely or nail it so hard you think about it for weeks afterwards. (& I like all of Kim's bands, especially Death Sentence Panda)
still love Godwaffle Noise Pancakes whenever I go, SF Sound is still amazing for modern classical. Dominique's record is going to kill it. Madame Blavatsky Overdrive & the Lovemakers are putting out ambitiously catchy pop albums that I have total respect for. I don't know though, half my friends left over a year ago and I'm out of the loop
always good - http://www.gardenofmemory.com/
& favorite monthly dance party is still International Freakout (run by Sublime Frequencies' Porest & Paul of Total Shutdown) which is even better after moving to Oakland, at the Knockout it had to be over by 2, these days that's when it's starting to peak

xp Clip'd Beaks are in SF now, as far as I know - they're playing an Oakland show in July w/Indian Jewelry and Psychic Ills.

darshan jesrani of metro area is playing tonight! at triple crown.
― one time, Thursday, 11 June 2009 06:18 (seventeen years ago)
triple crown has a bunch of good stuff lined up, dude at tweekin was talking it up. pete herbert and 40 thievez aren't far off, among a BUNCH of others
― psychgawsple, Thursday, 11 June 2009 06:40 (seventeen years ago)
so tweekin's just a shitty dollar record store now, right? hardly any new dance records?
― (jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Thursday, 11 June 2009 15:52 (seventeen years ago)
yea, it's pretty dismal in there. i think the owner is well aware it's not making any money and acts accordingly. the lamest thing is how they're sorta disowning the whole house/techno specialty in some weird attempt at attracting a different market (i think they're trying to change the name to TRS). they still stock certain things of interest, like that new moodymann ep, but they have absolutely nothing on amoeba anymore
― psychgawsple, Thursday, 11 June 2009 16:01 (seventeen years ago)
i didn't make it to see darshan jesrani. anyone go?
i believe manny at tweekin is the owner of triple crown. it's a nice place and they have some cool stuff happening. in fact (here comes the spam) i'm DJing there tonight with john blunck from sweaterfunk and robothustle from honeysoundsystem.
tweekin isn't looking too good these days. on tuesday i spent an hour or so there and still don't buy anything. they did have the new theo parrish 12", which i didn't see in amoeba. i hope they can get back on their feet.
― one time, Thursday, 11 June 2009 16:26 (seventeen years ago)
who are you irl?I talked with the triple crown guy a couple weeks back about playing records there, got his card and was told to contact him, but haven't had any luck yet getting back in touch. wanna work that out.
also, anyone know of a place that would just love to have a weekday night of low key acoustic guitar music/new age/cosmic synthesizer epics/spacey todd rundgren tracks/roxy music b-sides/whale calls? me and my friend want to find a place that'll host something like that so we can make it our baby.
― Chinavision (altair nouveau), Thursday, 11 June 2009 16:33 (seventeen years ago)
i really, really wish Tweekin' would get back in the game, if only because i miss being able to listen to unknown-to-me gems when i'm at amoeba.
speaking of which, i know that such stations would probably create gigantic headaches for amoeba, but how in hell's name can a record store not have vinyl listening stations? it bothers me to no end.
― the table is the table, Thursday, 11 June 2009 17:25 (seventeen years ago)
they put CDRs of selected vinyl new releases on the listening stations. but yeah, if they had turntables in there, it'd be asking for trouble.
― one time, Thursday, 11 June 2009 17:27 (seventeen years ago)
are there any new (dance) vinyl stores where you can listen to stuff anymore? every time i try to go to a store they're closed.
― (jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Thursday, 11 June 2009 18:03 (seventeen years ago)
altair, for that kinda thing, i'd do something more on the bar/lounge type of thing. dalva, casanova, etc
― (jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Thursday, 11 June 2009 18:04 (seventeen years ago)
maybe the attic for whale songs?
― tristes tropiques, Thursday, 11 June 2009 23:08 (seventeen years ago)
the attic was our first choice!
― Chinavision (altair nouveau), Thursday, 11 June 2009 23:23 (seventeen years ago)
speaking of Todd, he is playing at Slim's next Thursday (he does kick ass live nowadays and totally busted out some uncommon 70s album tracks last year)
― guammls (QE II), Saturday, 13 June 2009 00:07 (seventeen years ago)
what's looking good tonight ?
― oscar, Saturday, 13 June 2009 20:17 (seventeen years ago)
i've always wanted to go to one of the tormenta tropical/bersa discos parties. that's tonight elbo room. also, i believe 2 ilxors are djing a house party that i may swing by.
