much as I liked High Horse as a single (apart from the lyrics, still feel like a missed opportunity to me) I find it a bit unnecessary in the context of the album
― niels, Sunday, 19 August 2018 09:05 (seven years ago)
Morris - not a drug album, I was referring to her comment in rolling stone that she was on acid during the recording of mother
― Ross, Sunday, 19 August 2018 16:38 (seven years ago)
MatthewK said “lysergic,” too... sounded like you guys were busting out the blacklight, lol
― stan in the place where you work (morrisp), Sunday, 19 August 2018 17:07 (seven years ago)
more slightly buzzed than lysergic imo
― The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 19 August 2018 17:50 (seven years ago)
Well you can search and find the Rolling Stone interview and others where she describes acid as a great drug for artists because it’s humbling, and how she was tripping on LSD and feeling far from her mother who coincidentally texted her right then, leading to her writing the song. So “lysergic” not exactly misleading. She also says that she loved the last Tame Impala and wanted to bring some of that sound to country.

for me it's more pleasant, like being a little baked on a summer day where you have nothing to do, I don't necessarily need it to be like Piper at the Gates of the Honky Tonk
― The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 19 August 2018 21:43 (seven years ago)
i can't figure out if i would like one more verse in Mother or not. on one hand, it's perfect as is. on the other, it doesn't seem like it'd be that hard to write a good second verse, and she could still keep the whole thing under 2:30. pretty tempting!
― alpine static, Sunday, 19 August 2018 21:48 (seven years ago)
xp LOL
― stan in the place where you work (morrisp), Sunday, 19 August 2018 21:56 (seven years ago)
I don't necessarily need it to be like Piper at the Gates of the Honky Tonknew borad describe?
― an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Sunday, 19 August 2018 22:07 (seven years ago)
in my conversation w her and her producers i got the sense it's definitely a drug album
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 19 August 2018 22:38 (seven years ago)
i didn't have a place for this in my story but when they were finishing the album in LA they took shrooms and drove around listening to it
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 19 August 2018 22:39 (seven years ago)
"Lonely Weekend," "Velvet Elvis," and "High Horse" were part of the loop at the Starbucks where I work on Sundays, and they were as pleasant and innocuous as always. I can't imagine being excited for these songs or this album. Whatever the merits of the mix and production, her voice has no tension at all. I'd just rather listen to her compatriots Ashley Monroe and Miranda Lambert.
― morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 19 August 2018 22:46 (seven years ago)
At best her voice has a tug that's as affecting as reading about a romance mentioned casually in a newspaper story.
― morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 19 August 2018 22:47 (seven years ago)
It’s perfect café music (not meant as a dis, necessarily)
― stan in the place where you work (morrisp), Sunday, 19 August 2018 22:48 (seven years ago)
I was expecting something a little more exciting based on all the breathless talk about this record on ILM and elsewhere. I'm just waiting for everyonehere to get on the Amanda Shires train. She made a fantastic record recently which is everything I thought this album would be, and more.
― kornrulez6969, Monday, 20 August 2018 00:47 (seven years ago)
I guess I like the smoothness, Harvest Moon vibe of it
― The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 20 August 2018 00:48 (seven years ago)
Love the balearic yacht rock smoothness to the whole album, I mean it really sounds amazing and the melodies just glide.
― omar little, Monday, 20 August 2018 00:53 (seven years ago)
speaking of Neil Young she should cover Midnight on the Bay
― omar little, Monday, 20 August 2018 00:55 (seven years ago)
she should do a covers record. her version of miguel’s waves is all time
― ||||||||, Monday, 20 August 2018 06:57 (seven years ago)
that Amanda Shires sounds good on first listen, thanks for the recommendation
did you post it on the country thread?
― niels, Monday, 20 August 2018 07:20 (seven years ago)
it's gorgeous and of course it's a drug album
― dyl, Monday, 20 August 2018 08:13 (seven years ago)
Velvet Elvis sounds a lot like happy pills by Norah Jones.
Re drug album, slow burn does mention “good on green” yeah.
― Ross, Monday, 20 August 2018 11:23 (seven years ago)
I'm sure she did drugs but it's not really a drug albumby this measure like 85% of all records made in the 70s and 80s are drug albums
― The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 20 August 2018 13:02 (seven years ago)
Yeah agree
― Ross, Monday, 20 August 2018 13:07 (seven years ago)
It’s just a few stray references
Velvet Elvis sounds a lot like happy pills by Norah Jones.Interesting comment, as I like both songs (though not sure I hear too strong a similarity?)
― stan in the place where you work (morrisp), Monday, 20 August 2018 13:44 (seven years ago)
whenever I listen to this I always see Wonder Woman and realize I'd forgotten that song existed
― The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 20 August 2018 13:59 (seven years ago)
that Amanda Shires sounds good on first listen...did you post it on the country thread?
No. Feel free to introduce it, it's a great great record.
― kornrulez6969, Monday, 20 August 2018 14:08 (seven years ago)
it's great, the only talk of it was (unfortunately) on the worst music writing re: Xgau being a creep about her
― The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 20 August 2018 14:21 (seven years ago)
WONDER WOMAN is a trademark of DC Comics. All Rights Reserved.
― stan in the place where you work (morrisp), Monday, 20 August 2018 14:28 (seven years ago)
It's also called slow burn
― Number None, Monday, 20 August 2018 17:32 (seven years ago)
But if anything she's cut back on the weed refs
― Number None, Monday, 20 August 2018 17:33 (seven years ago)
"Slow Burn (A Doobie of Weed, Get It?)" was the original title
― The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 20 August 2018 17:39 (seven years ago)
Anyone else hearing traces of "Owner of a Lonely Heart" in "Lonely Weekend"?
― licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Sunday, 2 September 2018 13:39 (seven years ago)
How so
― yes, said (Ross), Sunday, 2 September 2018 16:47 (seven years ago)
i guess 'of-a-lo' and 'it's-a-lo' are similarly placed and basically equivalent melodically
― dyl, Sunday, 2 September 2018 17:32 (seven years ago)
album rules
it's very existential really, kinda zen, I really hope she's got a long career ahead of her
― niels, Thursday, 4 October 2018 07:35 (seven years ago)
Amazing record - occasionally I turn it up and am swept away. Still got no time for “Space Cowboy” and “Velvet Elvis” grates sometimes. Anyone who loves this, I can recommend “Same Trailer Different Park” - some killer songs there.
― an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Thursday, 4 October 2018 13:00 (seven years ago)
I wish I loved this record. Her wan approach kills it.
― You like queer? I like queer. Still like queer. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 4 October 2018 13:11 (seven years ago)
stoned, immaculate
― droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 4 October 2018 13:12 (seven years ago)
love this album i even have time for space cowboy
― Mordy, Thursday, 4 October 2018 13:39 (seven years ago)
What does "wan approach" mean ? (sorry, tried to look it up but only got tech explanations, which I doubt are related to the matter !)
― AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 4 October 2018 13:51 (seven years ago)
Same Trailer is certainly all time
― niels, Thursday, 4 October 2018 14:08 (seven years ago)
this album was the biggest musical surprise for me this year.I had never heard of her until High Horse came up on my Release Radar so i went to the album and just fell in love with the production and vibe.

Her singing.
― You like queer? I like queer. Still like queer. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 4 October 2018 14:56 (seven years ago)
Ah ok, so you don't like her voice/singing ?
― AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 4 October 2018 14:59 (seven years ago)
Her "wan approach" is actually a perfect fit for the songs, the production and the all-around vibe. Her performance completes the album.
IMO, of course.
― alpine static, Thursday, 4 October 2018 17:46 (seven years ago)
yeah it's hard for me to imagine the album with more powerful/commanding vocals? i do think that something like "rainbow" also really benefits from a certain narrowness of range. the whole album is just sort of meditative, even the real emotional moments
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 4 October 2018 18:01 (seven years ago)
probably album of the year, every time i come back to it i get a lovebuzz
― flopson, Thursday, 4 October 2018 23:35 (seven years ago)
I would rank :1/ Pageant Material : great songs, melodies, lyrics , production2/ Golden Hour : amazing production and arrangements, fantastic melodies but the lyrics are a bit impersonal/generic love songs(and less fun)3/ Same Trailer Different Park : very nice songs, cute/clever lyrics, great first albumAnd I love her voice. It's strong and emotional.
