Flee, Thou Matadors!7. Tortoises All the Way Down8. 2,459 Miles9. Wendy & Betsy10. New Wine, New Skins11. Michael, Row Your Boat Ashore12. Break on Through (to the Other Side) [pt. Two]

Catching up on everything itt since the end of March and I am having the best time! Other highlights so far: Hopesfall, Charmer and Oso Oso (I like my emo as unambiguous as possible).
That new Ostraca EP is sounding wonderful too. They were high up my metal ballot last year and I expect will be on there again.

got around to listening to the recent Senses Fail album. not bad. any recommendations of something with that sort of guitar work and melody, but minus the screamo?

Brad, et al: Last night I listened to an album, Communication Breaks by Track Star, which I adored back in the day but had forgotten about for over a decade, and it rocked me. But judging by its YT views, it's all but forgotten by everyone. Track Star was Wyatt from Aislers Set and a friend. It's punky emo-y stuff with embittered lyrics (that also manage to be witty and winsome) and an awesome warbly piano-y guitar tone (on the lead guitar) that i love. Overall reminds me of (unsurprisingly) Henry's Dress but less outright punk. I'd like to know what you guys think. From 1999 I think. (Sorry if this thread is just supposed to be new stuff. Is it??)
The album is on YT. I'll post the opener

Faith/Void is album of the year, easily.
And 'Theme from "Embrace Nothingness" (part two)' is fucking everything. Straight to the gut. Anthemic.
It reminds me hardcore of Desaparecidos, especially the vocals from 2.29 on goddamn... My emo-scope may be that of a novice, but it's a compliment ok? Song of the year. Fuck.

this is beyond great. wanted to go to bushwick public house last weekend but had already gotten Sumac tix before I knew about any of this. however, on the way to that show a bus I was on didn't move for a very long period of time and "fuck this!" really resonated. anyhow, next time

as I said previously in this thread, I love Basement. they're more '90s than so many bands that get tagged as '90s revivalists:

...and Skylight is apparently being quietly released this Friday
tbh that piece mostly just made me feel very sorry for the band. The response doesn't seem commensurate with the "offense" at all even though it was completely understandable that the other bands, etc. just wanted to do the right thing by their respective fanbases. Just a mess all around.

it's weird to me that they're finally putting out the album in two days but fine i guess
― princess of hell (BradNelson), Wednesday, 26 September 2018 15:53 (five years ago) link
Kind of a weird piece. I enjoyed it but the more I thought about it the more issues seemed to build. Like it really seems like she wants the band exonerated throughout a good chunk of the piece which is a weird way to approach this.
Also, say what you want about Sheridan Allen, but she got the dude some therapy and kickstarted a mediation process so it seems a little much to throw her under the bus entirely. (She definitely had some issues with how she approached this and ethics violations don't get me wrong)

if there's a better thread for this, someone point me to it, but: has anyone here been to The Fest in Gainesville? good experience or too-big shitshow (or somewhere in between)?

I've always wanted to go.
― husked, tonal wails (irrational), Monday, 1 October 2018 14:25 (five years ago) link
i’ve gone annually for the past few years! it’s totally worth it and awesome if you’re on its wavelength of drinking pbr nonstop for three days (it’s also p awesome if you’re sober i imagine i’ve just never tried it). there are a lot of ppl and it grows every year so it can be hard to get into certain shows (mostly by popular or hyped bands) if you don’t line up early bc of venue capacity. but also if you don’t get in there’s probably another awesome show a five minute walk away. it’s also a v welcoming and not v annoying crowd; i can barely deal with punks at new york punk shows but fest punks are v chill and cool for the most part in my experience, sorta like hanging out with friends you haven’t met yet
one of the things they dialed down last year were the secret midnight-4am shows at the holiday inn which was a bummer, those were one of the best parts of fest, but all of the other hotels also usually have something going on during those hours
if you go pls treat yourself to reggae shack and boca, my two favorite restaurants
― princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 1 October 2018 14:55 (five years ago) link
thanks Brad ... so are all the venues w/in walking distance of each other? or most, at least?
those are my favorite kind of festivals ... so much better than "let's all go stand in a field"
― alpine static, Monday, 1 October 2018 17:15 (five years ago) link
yeah it's spread between 9-10 venues that are all in walking distance of each other (though they're a 10-20 minute walk from any nearby hotel) and agreed, it's a much better experience
