I demand a re-poll with the critical 3rd option.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Wednesday, 15 August 2018 02:02 (five years ago) link

I'm happy to repoll if we can agree to exclude the obviously inferior 'oombayseeyou' option.

It wouldn't matter because the resplendent "ehbubadeesaybubadeeyon" would obviously stomp on anything you put in there, up to and including "ommaway," "covfefe," "sloopy," and "sussudio."

I appreciate their absolute nothing of a Wikipedia entry. These are the only two paragraphs, the rest is basically stats stuff -- discography, membership, etc.

Rusted Root is an American worldbeat rock band formed in 1990 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, by singer-guitarist Michael Glabicki, bassist Patrick Norman and percussionist Liz Berlin. The band got its start as the house band playing a weekly gig in Jack's Back Room on Pittsburgh's South Side. The band achieved fame in 1994 with its platinum-selling album When I Woke, which included the hit single "Send Me on My Way". The song has been featured prominently in many films and commercials. Rusted Root has sold more than three million albums.

The band is known for its fusion of acoustic, rock, world and other styles of music, with a strong percussion section that draws from African, Latin American, and Native American influences. Michael Glabicki has acknowledged the popular success of Peter Gabriel's 1986 album So as an influence on his decision to incorporate worldbeat into his own music. The band's lyrical content varies but often talks about Christianity and Judaism.

So, are you saying you feel a little bit of distance from the Rusted Root material, a lot of which was written when you were in your early 20s?

Yeah, there’s been moments on stage when I’m like, “What am I doing?” Like, “I don’t know what this is.” But, then, luckily, I’m fortunate enough that the music was so open-ended and wasn’t written about a certain time in my life. It was sort of like this collection of images and it was more tonal than it was lyrical. “Send Me on My Way” had “moobahdesee, moobahdeyah,” which aren’t even words, so now I can just sort of like adapt the tone to where I’m at now. It’s more ritualistic at this point for the audience and for myself, and improvising in it and opening it up, there’s a lot more in it to find.

This video is embarrassing and cringey in all sorts of ways, perhaps even surpassing the original. Shame he doesn't dig into those neologisms with quite the same panache.

əkoostik hookah released an album called 'dubbabuddah' in 1994, strengthing my increasing suspicion that jam band culture is underpinned by a pontypool-style virus which erodes the language centres of the brains of those affected

'dubbahbuddah' features an tune called - wait for it - "Harmonic Convergence", which is definitely in the upper echelon of mid-'90s Widespread Panic-adjacent ephemera. Imagine if your college classmate - the one equally adept with making hemp necklaces as they are with the way-too-nice guitar courtesy of their Big-Pharma executive dad - took the chord progression of the intro of Bowie's "Panic in Detroit" and made that into an entire song, with (of course) lots of harmonics.

I used to think it would be even better if they pushed the tempo a few BPM, ditched the adult-contempo piano for some thrashing solos on the acoustic - oh, sorry, əkoostik - guitar, added more percussion tracks, then tied it together with better backup vocals. However, there's no need for Hookah to do this, because I'm basically describing the Rusted Root song "Ecstasy".

Rusted Root - solving our least-salient problems since 1994.

Some people eventually sober up and realize that the ideas they had while under the influence of mind-altering substances weren't nearly as profound as they seemed at the time. Others keep the party going indefinitely and utilize their major label record contracts as a means of foisting those ill-informed thoughts and expressions upon the public-at-large. Rusted Root et al are basically the margins of a high school stoner's geometry notebook made flesh.

Looking back, I have no idea how I stuck with Phish through so much "Llama Taboot" and yet somehow "Gotta Jibboo" was enough to bring the whole thing screeching to a halt for me.

When Pitchfork first informed us about Vampire Weekend in 2008, I remember someone on these here internets (Stylus? ILX? I don't remember) responding to "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" with the retort of "I liked these guys back when they called themselves 'Rusted Root'"

əkoostik hookah's repetoire contains 15 songs with 'train' in the title alone.
