This is a classic record label cautionary tale. It's interesting how she basically says it wouldn't have gone down like this a few years later -- everyone records at home so she wouldn't have been spending $$$$ on studio time (which of course she didn't know she had to pay back), wouldn't have had to fly around doing press at radio stations, there would be better framework & expectations around getting paid for streaming, etc. I wonder how true that is, or rather exactly how young viral artists are getting taken advantage of now.

uh, lol Oakland didn't have any stores like gucci, fendi, or prada in 2011 ... no, not shot in Oakland. also: street signs the wrong color and font; vacant lot that bears a resemblance to various vacant lots in Oakland, but with a sign showing the 310 area code ... not Oakland.

I have only the vaguest memory of what the video looked like but 99% of her brand was about Oakland (including lines in the song). I expected her video to be shot there.

she's from here, yeah, and some of the locations in the video do resemble Oakland. Like there are definite similarities between parts of L.A. and parts of Oakland architecturally and in terms of like, landscaping and plants. Like, if the street signs had been green and in the font Oakland uses for street signs and the names were familiar, I could have been convinced that it was shot in Oakland ... I mean, if someone told me that the shopping district street scenes were shot on Lakeshore Ave and they just photoshopped the L.A. signs and cut away to the fancier stores, I wouldn't say it was impossible ...
