The Levellers
New Model Army though there was probably a deal of overlap after the levellers broke through as the support act for an NMA tour in around '91.

The Mission who overlaped with Goth but had a tribe of people hitching between shows.

Stevolende, Saturday, 4 August 2018 23:55 (seven years ago)

Beat Happening

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 5 August 2018 00:59 (seven years ago)

It can be argued that Wagner was inspirational for the Nazis and they even had their own propaganda composer in Strauss.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 5 August 2018 01:42 (seven years ago)

Weird that nobody's mentioned the Insane Clown Posse. First example I thought of reading the OP.

mortal kombats fill your eyes (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 5 August 2018 01:51 (seven years ago)

Dan S, Sunday, 5 August 2018 01:53 (seven years ago)

Dexy's Midnight Runners
The Cure

Neil S, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 10:22 (seven years ago)

Discharge/Exploited crust punk is/was always relatively easy to spot.

Neds/Wonderstuff, similarly. BURN WITH FIRE.

The Cure (Robert Smith, really).

The shard-borne beetle with his drowsy hums (Chinaski), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 10:41 (seven years ago)

Discharge/Exploited and crust punk are 2 different things although the first influenced the latter (more Discharge than Exploited, crust punks mostly hated the Exploited tbh). Exploited = mohicans/spikes, crust punk = gross dreadlocks

Neither of them smell very good though.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 11:05 (seven years ago)

Now glad I never mentioned it to them!

The shard-borne beetle with his drowsy hums (Chinaski), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 11:06 (seven years ago)

definitely Belle and Sebastian. ILM might not exist if it weren't for them

Scritti Vanilli - The Word Girl You Know It's True (dog latin), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 11:45 (seven years ago)

Not a band but the breakdancing/bboy culture

F# A# (∞), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 13:01 (seven years ago)

Did that crusty punk thing start with Crass fandom? & expand I know there were quite a few bands operating in that area in the early 80s.

Then there was the Spirit of '77 thing that I never quite understood, i thought pun was more vital over the previous year or couple of years. & becoming codified by '77.
& a lot of people woken up by punk had moved onto things a bit less codified by the early 80s anyway.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 13:14 (seven years ago)

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 21:59 (seven years ago)

this kind of thing happened to me, I went to see The Books in Milwaukee but screwed up and got the wrong week, so we saw a Mexican Wrestling show instead. obviously I don't regret the error at all.

frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 22:01 (seven years ago)

significant overlap with grateful dead I would guess but disco biscuits. (one of my roommates in college was really, really into them, and as a result was almost never home)

subcultures w/bands versus bands with subcultures

mh, Thursday, 9 August 2018 00:26 (seven years ago)

Jerry Garcia is pretty much the last guy I'd expect to see in a Members Only type jacket.

henry s, Thursday, 9 August 2018 01:47 (seven years ago)

Well, except for Violent J...

henry s, Thursday, 9 August 2018 01:48 (seven years ago)

Sinatra / Bobby-soxers

unrequested refill (morrisp), Thursday, 24 April 2025 13:47 (one year ago)

There was a persistent psychobilly subculture in the UK throughout the 80s which I guess was birthed by The Cramps.
