There's a new Axegrinder but it's terrible.

props to Deafheaven for giving is their best last night despite Kerry not making it past the border
― wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Saturday, 28 July 2018 15:29 (seven years ago)
I tried several times to get into Manilla Road but never could. Oh, well. RIP to a dude who lived it for real. Nothing but respect for that.
― grawlix (unperson), Saturday, 28 July 2018 15:57 (seven years ago)
I greatly admire Manilla Road, and Shelton was a true gentleman who exuded positivity. Open the Gates and Crystal Logic are two of the best underground metal albums of the '80s. He will be sorely missed.

What happened?

Good musical taste on the part of the border guard? (I kid, I kid)

It's official: new Sunn O))) album in 2019, engineered by Steve Albini.

The new Khanus is even better than I was hoping from the teaser track above. I would say it's kind of a progressive Viking black metal thing, but it's hard to pigeonhole.
― o. nate, Tuesday, 31 July 2018 00:33 (seven years ago)
Lychgate is another interesting progressive black metal one. Maybe not as immediate as the Khanus but well worth checking out, especially for name-your-own-price:

― o. nate, Tuesday, 31 July 2018 00:35 (seven years ago)
I liked the Lychgate a lot but maybe not as much as the previous one. But I'm a sucker for those gothic (as in architecture) church organ breakdowns. Totally looking forward to the Khanus!
― Paul Reverse and the rediaRs (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 31 July 2018 08:07 (seven years ago)
I really like this Lychgate and think it might win over some of the doubters. Less circus, less organ.

New Krisiun album in September. Sounds like a Krisiun album. I like it.

August albums I like:
Rebel Wizard (8/17, Prosthetic) Exactly everything I love about the band - chaotic riffs aplenty, maybe a shade more epic than in the past, and he wears it well.
Tile (8/17, Limited Appeal) Allentown, PA noise outfit that touches all the right Jesus Lizard/Black Flag receptors for me. I'm planning on catching their record release show.
Uniform (8/17, Sacred Bones) Their first album was more industrial but they seem more like brainy, disjointed hardcore now (with Liturgy's drummer in the fold) based on their recent show with Deafheaven and the few spins I have given the new one. And that's fine.
Thou (8/31, Sacred Bones) It's fucking Thou, man.
Throat (8/31, Svart) A Finnish noise-noir group whose sophomore release provides uneasy listening that I can get behind, like Nick Cave joined Shellac. They are playing Philly the day after the Tile record release show which will make for a noisy weekend for me!

It's pretty cool to see the Black Dahlia Murder taking out some underground bands. Much respect.

This new Taphos is sounding pretty good. Gritty death "from the same Danish scene as Undergang and Phrenelith":

The new High On Fire song sounds like a High On Fire song. New album out 10/5, produced by Kurt Ballou again. It's good, but I think they should stop working with him and maybe work with Erik Rutan or someone else instead.

Anybody listen to the Manticora album?
― fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Monday, 6 August 2018 14:40 (seven years ago)
I haven't played the whole thing yet, but I've enjoyed the two songs I've played. Muscular heavy/power metal, nowhere near as ponderous (or abstruse) as the ridiculous titles (e.g. "The Farmer's Tale Pt. 1 - The Aftermath of Indifference") might lead you to expect.
― glenn mcdonald, Monday, 6 August 2018 23:19 (seven years ago)

I also really like that Manticora album!

guess the band
On this album the band have changed direction with frontman [redacted] commenting, ‘this new record is more Muse than Meshuggah, more Ghost than Gojira, and more Biffy Clyro than Burzum!’'

Ha! I have no idea who that is but I won't be listening, either.
Now playing: the new Primal Fear. I remember seeing these guys open for Halford in 2003 or so; it was like when Wire brought a Wire cover band out as their opening act.

grudging respect to them for cheerfully owning their descent into total shitness tbh

nazi Shining is from Sweden and still makes black metal as fas as I know/care, former jazzbo shining are from Norway

― The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 10 August 2018 14:02 (seven years ago)
One other note re Shining: I mentioned on Twitter that the first line of that song is a straight-up steal from Nickelback, and the band replied that yes, it was.
― grawlix (unperson), Friday, 10 August 2018 15:51 (seven years ago)
oh man I thought we were talking about shitty Nazi Shining not that one, weird ass world

oh yes me too i will never forgive them for that honestly
and yeah it's a weird world where there are now _two_ shitty metal shinings but i guess they had nowhere go to from "live blackjazz" but down, so i can't begrudge them too much for going that way with a vengeance.
― Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Saturday, 11 August 2018 00:23 (seven years ago)
Can't believe I haven't mentioned it here but Nachash put an album out on Shadow Kingdom
http://shadowkingdomrecords.bandcamp.com/album/phantasmal-triunity
Occulty epic weird black metal with death elements (and I swear I hear some Amebix/Axegrinder in some of the riffs), they have that left-field feel that means they probably listen to a lot of Eastern European and Mediterranean 1.5th wave stuff. And Samael maybe.
