Rusted Root's influence on globglogabgalab is undeniable

I don't think the contemporariness of the Root and the Doctors precludes the fact that the Rusted Root fife player was a charter member of the Spin Doctors fan club.

In addition, NASA engineers chose "Send Me on My Way" as "wake up" music for the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity, for Sol 21.[19]

Laughing @ this thread has been a threat to my continued employment all day. My most recent half-stifled fit of titters was triggered by realizing this stupid thing has already exploded to 70+ replies.

I thank you all.

Phish neologisms include: trune, taboot, blastoplast, jibboo... that's just off the top of my head. there are probably more that I'm forgetting.

There are few things a jam band can't effortlessly ruin imo.

Anybody here have some salient facts about əkoostik hookah? All I know is that we used to get a kick out of very enthusiastically bellowing their profoundly stupid name in the midst of an ultimate sesh in the quad every time they rolled through my college town.

Pizza's the food that's sure to please! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 19 July 2018 19:17 (five years ago) link

Man, I miss ultimate in the quad. And devil sticks in front of the Rathskeller just before going to see the local Sublime cover band.

I have to literally walk away from my desk rn because the phrase 'ultimate in the quad' is making me lose the last of my composure.

I guess I was vaguely aware that this band existed. I must have seen posters or CDs or t-shirts or something. But I am very happy that I had not knowingly heard even a single djembe-slap-worth of their alleged "music" until now.

There were probably people on the periphery of my social circle who were into this sort of thing (baja shirt, hacky sack, Birkenstocks/huaraches, pennywhistle). But my truest droogs and I were mainly getting high and listening to Residents, Beethoven, Modern Jazz Quartet, and old-tymey 78s during those years. We were aware there was such a thing as radio, but as far as we were concerned it may as well have been broadcasting solely to the moon.

a lot of interesting ideas and feelings in this song. and wow, a drum circle as the rhythmic backing, cool!

Karl Malone, Thursday, 19 July 2018 19:43 (five years ago) link

i started to write out the lyrics but my fingers started to hurt

would like to reach out my hand
on myself, i want to tell you to run
mobadasay, mobadayoung
well pick me up with golden hand
on myself, i wanna tell you to run
mabadaysay, mobadayoung,

well i would like to hold lighted hand
maybe i’ll cry
i would like to hold my hand
how we will cross, how will cross
send me on my way

Karl Malone, Thursday, 19 July 2018 19:50 (five years ago) link

Fun fact: there are as many emotions in this song as their are instruments.

Critical reception has been mixed. In January 2014, in a review for Cruel Sun, Kurt Keefner said that "the African vocal riff from "Send Me on My Way" is bad Ladysmith Black Mambazo",[7]

Disappointed this poll doesn't include an option for the phrase that he repeats in the verse, which I believe to be ehbubadeesaybubadeeyon.

I named my high school band Desert Ice and as bad as I feel about that I'm glad I somehow did not think of Rusted Root.

They're still touring, and judging by recent YouTube videos, they sound just as good now as they did then.

omar little, Thursday, 19 July 2018 20:19 (five years ago) link

They burst on the scene in Pennsylvania when I was in college - 1994/5, Saw them 5 or 6 times in 1994. Each show was magical...they had it back then.

I have "When I Woke" and "Welcome To My Party". I love the WIW opening track "Drum Trip". It's so anti-commercial! Vocals are a bit David Byrne-ish.

omar little, Thursday, 19 July 2018 20:21 (five years ago) link

I happen to be listening to that track right now (when you search Rusted Root on Spotify, playlists that come up include "Have a Great Day!", "Totally Stress Free", and "A Perfect Day" -- sounds like my vibe)

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Thursday, 19 July 2018 20:22 (five years ago) link

Ultimately they may have damaged or certainly limited their careers by allowing themselves to be exclusively lumped into the Deadhead / jam band circuit.

omar little, Thursday, 19 July 2018 20:22 (five years ago) link

Only one of the members in the photo posted above is still in the band. How DARE the current incarnation call themselves "Rusted Root."

Rusted Root has one original member, the others are all collected bits of twigs and rope shaped into person-shaped figures.

I have 'RUSTED ROOT' tattooed on my thing.

I'd never seen this video before and it's way less dated than I would have expected, like hippie shit is removed from all usual pop culture time signifiers.

A friend of mine ended up hanging out with these guys in a desert somewhere in like 1993 and I assume did a lot of shrooms. And this record was a staple at my wife's college house in Ann Arbor circa 1995 thanks to our shameful sort-of jam band past, but mostly from her hippie roommates who sometimes had random people and tanks of nitrous in the basement. I won't lie, I didn't hate it, though drugs were usually involved. I also had sex at least once while this record was playing.

Anybody here have some salient facts about əkoostik hookah?

This band, who I've never actually heard, was the breaking point for my wife's jam band era. I think she might have ended seeing them with the hippie roommates and fucking hated it so much that it made her suddenly and jarringly realize how dumb so much of that shit was and how obnoxious and idiotic and mindless and snobby all the hippies who frequented her house were.

She used to sing the line "take the train to HOOKAVILLE" to me as shorthand for "my hippie roomates did something stupid or irresponsible again" or to make me mad but it would fill her with shame to do so and she'd get angry at herself about it.

PS. I still love the Dead and refuse to strongly denounce Phish.

Thread took a rather dark turn. I'm so sorry. The therapy bills alone must be astronomical, but really you never fully recover.

Even now you still hear that loathsome voice whisper in your ear.
