october is the dumbest thing, why the fuck are they still running it

marcos, Tuesday, 17 July 2018 21:23 (seven years ago)

“Launching new verticals” is what you do when you can’t afford to “pivot to video” I think

devops mom (silby), Tuesday, 17 July 2018 21:24 (seven years ago)

throw some verticals on the wall and see what sticks

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 17 July 2018 21:25 (seven years ago)

it makes me feel special to listen to the october podcast knowing that i am the only person who has listened to that episode

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 17 July 2018 21:28 (seven years ago)

they're getting enough money from somebody -- prob some beer corp -- to make it worth their while

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 July 2018 21:49 (seven years ago)

all the beers in that essay are goose island so they're getting inbev money

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 July 2018 22:02 (seven years ago)

Look at the pics, it's a total advertorial (also, small print at bottom of page -- "ZX Ventures, a division within AB InBev, is an investor in October"). They should have a more prominent notice, tho.

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 17 July 2018 22:11 (seven years ago)

The piece also fails to mention all the time you'll be standing in line at the porta-potties after drinking all day at a festival.

Finally -- this is really, really dumb:

7:30 p.m.: Courtney Barnett and Kubaba Kuwawa

Australian rocker Courtney Barnett writes songs that could be episodes of Seinfeld, with verses about nothing that address everything. That indie rock tradition dates back to the days of Pavement, but what makes Barnett so appealing is that the songs are so damn fun. By this point in the evening, you should be in that same mode and really content to drink whatever a friend hands you, be that a glass of frose or the dry-hopped guava Kubaba Kuwawa (brewed in coordination with womens’ beer non-profit Pink Boots Society).

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 17 July 2018 22:15 (seven years ago)

what are you in the mood for? anything, at this point in the day. like courtney barnett? yeah, she definitely has that 'everything' vibe. here, have a kubaba kuwawa

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 17 July 2018 22:17 (seven years ago)

you should be in that same mode and really content to drink whatever a friend hands you

this is dangerous advice

yeah, I realize this isn't why this was posted here but there are a lot of asides along these lines ("don’t stress it, drink whatever ends up in your cup") that makes it... very clear this was written by "passionate millennial males" hopefully for them too. it seems especially weird given that RAINN is a partner and "don't take an eye off your drink, ever" is drilled into every girl's brain from like age 12

So with introduction of the not especially well named Levels --- is this a sort of muffler for the inordinate amount of hip-hop that has topped the end of the year lists the past couple, maybe?

57mg/20floz, Tuesday, 31 July 2018 17:31 (seven years ago)

seems like there's been in uptick in number of hip hop reviews-- 146 so far this year. Nearly as many as they did in the entirety of 2015 (156)

Genius says ONE THIRD of songs on the Hot 100 in 2017 mention that watch which seems, highly improbable to me

one-third of the songs on the billboard hot 100 in 2017 included a patek mention 💎https://t.co/URv47SFLsA

it does feel super rap-heavy lately xp

marcos, Monday, 13 August 2018 13:50 (seven years ago)

This strikes me as perhaps not the classiest of headlines:

Aretha Franklin Dead:
Paul McCartney, Chance the Rapper,
Diana Ross, More React

empire bro-lesque (morrisp), Thursday, 16 August 2018 16:50 (seven years ago)

ugh, articles about celebs tweeting rip are the worst

President Keyes, Thursday, 16 August 2018 16:52 (seven years ago)

though oddly the headline I see is:

Aretha Franklin Remembered: Brian Wilson, Cat Power, Missy Elliott, and More Pay Tribute

President Keyes, Thursday, 16 August 2018 16:54 (seven years ago)

it's a few articles to the right of that one, on the same row

empire bro-lesque (morrisp), Thursday, 16 August 2018 16:56 (seven years ago)

(obv. that 2nd one is the "right" way to do the headline)

it's easy to be cynical about those kinds of headlines -- i used to be -- but truthfully the average reader is going to click on them from a pure place, so you are providing a sort of service for the types of ppl who aren't on twitter 24/7

J0rdan S., Thursday, 16 August 2018 17:09 (seven years ago)

5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 16 August 2018 17:13 (seven years ago)

Turning back to Pfork's AB InBev-sponsored, beer-themed microsite:

I'm an enthusiastic beer drinker myself (and I have no artistic projects to promote), so I am not at all one to cast stones here; but an artist interview like this one is very strange to me: https://oct.co/essays/having-beer-japanese-breakfast (both in its essence as a beer "advertorial," and the specific topics discussed in that context).

empire bro-lesque (morrisp), Thursday, 16 August 2018 17:56 (seven years ago)

(it's also somewhat amusing/interesting to me how this artist, who appears fairly young, says -- "...when I was younger, I was into beer. Like into IPAs and now I’m just like, 'Whatever.'" But that's a different, beer-specific, story.)

empire bro-lesque (morrisp), Thursday, 16 August 2018 18:00 (seven years ago)

well, she formed her first band in college back in 2008

President Keyes, Thursday, 16 August 2018 18:06 (seven years ago)

yeah - it's funny to me because when I was in my 20s, I drank the shittiest beer, and only more recently got "into IPAs," etc. And she's already over it!

empire bro-lesque (morrisp), Thursday, 16 August 2018 18:17 (seven years ago)

(I guess the craft beer craze also didn't really hit until I was out of my 20s -- but I probably wouldn't have paid $$ on "good beer" at that age, even it had been a thing.)
