there's no way a mind which thinks that's an acceptable band name could ever be anything other than 100% contemptible.

awww this is so wrong - its ridiculous and funny and, most importantly, accurately encapsulates the music (which, at least at the outset) was this very lovingly constructed miserablist/minimalist keyboard pop (composed and performed solely on cheap keyboards). I love Owen, good guy.

Yeah, I never took offense to that name. It seems appropriately self-effacing and accurate.

Another one I could never bring myself to listen to, but not just because of the name - the covers were pretty dire too: Dayglo Abortions.

I really like the one Casiotone album I own a lot and he was charmingly awkward and funny when I saw him a couple years ago. I don't know how anyone could hear that name and not realize that it's v funny.

I also always loved how he consistently referred to CFTPA as a "band" onstage, in the plural, etc. even tho it was just one guy. ("Hi we're Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. This song is called "Casiotone for the Painfully Alone Joins the Foreign Legion".)

Radiohead is one of those names that you've spent enough time around to not even really consider. Actually thinking about it though, yeah, it's pretty lame. Definitely retains a whiff of the 90's.

I still kind of wish Eyehategod was just called I Hate God. That's a name.

I don't have any idea whether ...And You WIll Know Us By The Trail Of Our Dead is actually worth contemplating at all but their name really irks me. Way too many words to say very little.

One more vote for Casiotone... actually being a decent act though. Never met the guy. His music seems sincere enough.

Pretty much any band name that begins with an ellipsis isn't going to sit well with me.

Casiotone does have that cleverness ingredient that irks so many people. Yet I like the name.

Architecture in Helsinki is silly, and slightly condescending, like Helsinki is exotic, no? There's a worse one along these lines, although noone has heard of them: Village of Savoonga. Dude, it's a little village up in Alaska!!

Sure it does, I think it was actually the implication of "our dead" that I misinterpreted which was really bugging me. Thanks for clarifying...reading up on them they sound half-decent - maybe I'll give them a shot after I clear a couple hundred songs out of my New folder.

Casitone is thinking of changing his name. Tried to dissuade him, or else he should change it to a past album title: "Vs. Children" or "Advance Base Battery Life" or even go with the acronym CFTPA, which he shares with the Canadian Film and Television Producers Association.

I'm disappointed there isn't more wildly irrational writing off of people because of their real name. I sure didn't have to hear Jack Johnson before deciding that his music was boring.

AIDS Wolf are actually pretty cool people.

But actually I'm kind of a hypocrite in this area. I love Wolf Eyes and AIDS Wolf, but I've got no interest in ever hearing Wolf Parade b/c they've got a stupid name, but then didn't they come out around the same time as Mice Parade?

Devon Clifford, the drummer of Canadian alt-rock act You Say Party! We Say Die!, has died aged 30.

He collapsed during the band's Vancouver show at the Rickshaw Theatre venue on Friday (April 16).

Singer Becky Ninkovic reportedly asked fans at the gig to call 911 after he collapsed. He underwent emergency surgery for a brain haemorrhage, but died April 18.

The band's record label Paper Bag has posted a statement from his family online:

YSPWSD's Devon Clifford experienced a massive brain haemorrhage resulting from congenital defects while on stage in Vancouver on Friday night and fell into a coma. A surgery was performed but sadly doctors were unable to save his life. He was 30.

Devon Clifford was an extremely gifted drummer and determined character. He loved his family, loved his band, loved traveling, loved being on stage and loved meeting people around the world. He was smart, witty, passionate, and music meant everything to him. He was also incredibly generous with his love and respected everybody he came into contact with. This was underlined by his work with the under privileged at the Portland Hotel Society.

The Clifford family would like to take this opportunity to remind young people to have the courage to follow their dreams like Devon did.

The family would also like to take this opportunity to thank everybody around the world for their kind words and stories about how Devon impacted their lives.

The band also paid tribute to their drummer via Twitter. Their post simply said: "DEVON CLIFFORD 1979 - 2010 R.I.P."

This seems to be the place they were talked about most on ILM. Did anyone ever end up giving them a chance?
