years ago i recorded a band and we did the tracking on computer and at the end ran it through someone's reel to reel for a mastering pass to get the tape compression and sort of pre-master the song. its kind of a common technique.

ripoff that they only send you a 16 bit CD quality WAV tho

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 12 July 2018 14:53 (seven years ago)

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 12 July 2018 15:08 (seven years ago)

yeah, people do this. I wonder how often they replace the tape, though.

scopin' VARs (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 12 July 2018 16:02 (seven years ago)

CD-quality seems scammy, though. Can't imagine people only or mostly do it as a final step. I guess it depends on pricing. Maybe it's fairly cheap and intended for home recordists. I'm sure Jack White has his own steam powered tape machine to use.

i did it with a VHS once. sounded really cool. that's some thick tape.

It's just a reissue of a 45 with a godawful pun printed on the sleeve.

my local thrift store is now pricing anything on Deutsche Grammophon for $3.99, it's the end times

sleeve, Sunday, 16 September 2018 15:31 (seven years ago)

But thanks to the economy of scale isn't vinyl much more expensive to produce?

canary christ (stevie), Sunday, 16 September 2018 16:40 (seven years ago)

Than it used to be. I mean, obvs labels and stores are also trying to make £££s off the only music people actually pay for anymore.

canary christ (stevie), Sunday, 16 September 2018 16:40 (seven years ago)

It is, but small labels still manage to sell LPs for under £10 on much smaller pressings than Paul Mcfuckingcartney, so this is still a massive rip off

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 16 September 2018 16:42 (seven years ago)

I had dinner at Cracker Barrel last night, and in the shop they have a line of "exclusive" picture discs, including the Walk The Line soundtrack.

one month passes...

Holy shit, I'm standing in a Movie Exchange (what CD Warehouse turned into) which carries used vinyl now. The one closer to me has a totally random selection stuff all priced at $3.99 a title, but this "Flagship" location has a bunch of popular titles at the hugest gouging prices I've ever seen.

For example, not one but two used 2003 reissues of Dark Side of The Moon for $69 apiece.

And as a further obscenity, a vintage copy of Songs In The Key Of Life with both records and the EP but no book and there's a full split bottom seam on the back cover could be yours for a cool $100!

I'm about to barf.

The Greta Van Gerwig (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 7 November 2018 23:14 (seven years ago)

This price only available for the next 05:32 minutes!

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 7 November 2018 23:15 (seven years ago)

jfc

sleeve, Wednesday, 7 November 2018 23:21 (seven years ago)

Actually, that’s not a terrible price for the 03 DSOTM. It’s pretty widely esteemed by the Hoffman nerds as being the closest you’ll get to an original pressing - and more likely to not be crackly. You can find em a bit cheaper on Discogs but not much - & likely by the time you factor in shipping... but that Key of Life price is donkulous.

Maybe the Stevie is a HOT STAMPER.

The Greta Van Gerwig (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 8 November 2018 00:26 (seven years ago)

it sure ain't the NICE PRICE

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 8 November 2018 00:29 (seven years ago)

one year passes...

so I'm trying VNYL now on a lark, I realize they're legit now. i'm on the one record a month plan, set to #curate.

will need to be restrained if I get Bobby Caldwell record

Lady Antibody (Neanderthal), Sunday, 19 July 2020 01:34 (five years ago)

what have you gotten so far?

sleeve, Sunday, 19 July 2020 02:21 (five years ago)

Nothin yet. Waiting for my first.

My Spotify is full of 80s power ballads which might put them on the wrong scent

Lady Antibody (Neanderthal), Sunday, 19 July 2020 02:40 (five years ago)

Err, good luck with that! https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/vnyl.org

not exactly my thing, esp if they look at my playlists and my custom written "tastes"

Lady Antibody (Neanderthal), Monday, 20 July 2020 03:54 (five years ago)

just joshin. looking forward to your updates on how it goes.

but jeez, that link that mike posted isn't too encouraging, is it? what are they doing?

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Monday, 20 July 2020 04:14 (five years ago)

sounds like they're just really slow. i'm guessing I'll last one delivery on this thing cos I'm impatient as fuck, lol

Lady Antibody (Neanderthal), Monday, 20 July 2020 04:26 (five years ago)

Be prepared to receive the careful selections your blind grandma might pick out if you asked her to grab an LP for you while she happened to be at Goodwill shopping for nightstand doilies.

Evan, Monday, 20 July 2020 15:14 (five years ago)

I just got rid of a bunch of crap that came with some curbside records. If you like throwing money away, you could have sent it to me and I could mail you a Mantovani or Ray Conniff record every month for a very long time.

Tōne Locatelli Romano (PBKR), Monday, 20 July 2020 15:26 (five years ago)

VYNL is hoping to take advantage of the popular trend of getting cool points to be among the first to reevaluate some bland popular hit artist of the past and/or novelty record as "actually really good" via thinkpiece or tweet.

To expand on this, I wonder if VNYL ever shipped anyone an old calendar by accident. Understandable mistake when you're just mindlessly pulling things out of bins without looking, then packing and shipping.

Evan, Monday, 20 July 2020 20:55 (five years ago)

I thought they (sadly) dropped the (endlessly clownable) thrift-store records bit early on, and inked deals with unknown labels, in order to act as a distribution channel for unsold product by unsuccessful contemporary artists.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 20 July 2020 21:25 (five years ago)

Oh, maybe! I must have forgotten, because that sounds familiar now.

Evan, Monday, 20 July 2020 22:05 (five years ago)

great, I'm gonna get the Heene Boyz debut album on vinyl

Lady Antibody (Neanderthal), Monday, 20 July 2020 22:26 (five years ago)

on colored vinyl

Tōne Locatelli Romano (PBKR), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 13:03 (five years ago)

Lol they shipped my package.

Problem is i wrote some traditional metal and hip hop that i liked but i also hooked up my Spotify that has mostly 80s power ballads on recently played tracks.

Can't wait for my dogeared Ugly Kid Joe record

Lady Antibody (Neanderthal), Friday, 24 July 2020 22:14 (five years ago)

it got (gently) teased upthread, but if you end up being unhappy with VNYL it seems like this might be worth looking at:

Does a $400 Stooges box set count?

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Sunday, 26 July 2020 10:04 (five years ago)

VMP are fine and put good records back into print (I wouldn't own Buhloone Mindstate if it wasn't for them) (though its the short version of the album), tho their shipping is expensive if you're foreign and their copywriting is icky

Pinche Cumbion Bien Loco (stevie), Sunday, 26 July 2020 17:00 (five years ago)

They reissue that Fun House thing every 10 years and it keeps getting more expensive. I love Fun House but I’m not buying that.

Boring, Maryland, Sunday, 26 July 2020 17:35 (five years ago)

the $20,000 Fun House boxed set which comes with an actual fun house with an affordable mortgage attached, fresh with Stooges posters and artwork adorned on all of the walls, and a squatter in your living room

Lady Antibody (Neanderthal), Sunday, 26 July 2020 17:37 (five years ago)

...and the exclusive VMP version adds a cocktail recipe.

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 26 July 2020 17:54 (five years ago)

Has the Funhouse box ever been on vinyl before? I got the CD box when Rhino Handmade put it out and I hardly ever play it, even though Fun House is one of my favourite ever records - it's just that the finished article is so perfect I don't want to hear alt-takes, alt mixes or even live versions.
