Bon Jovi is from Venus, Bon Scott is from Mars (xp)

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:29 (seven years ago)

Yeah Zeppelin only licenses their tunes to "Thor" movies now.

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:29 (seven years ago)

I hate to repeat myself, but it's a UK compilation.

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:30 (seven years ago)

Is the point that Brit-Dads do not dig Zep(?)

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:32 (seven years ago)

There's no tradition of Classic Rock stations in the UK, and most of these were UK hit singles, Led Zeppelin never had any hit singles.

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:34 (seven years ago)

In fact I'm pretty sure all of these were hit singles.

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:35 (seven years ago)

voted Ace of Spades for no dadly reason whatsoever other than its an amazing song.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:37 (seven years ago)

think i'm gonna vote for 50, mainly cause of rod. who's more dad than rod?

supreme court justice samuel lance-ito (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:38 (seven years ago)

my concept of Dad Rock based on my own dead Dad is Irish Showbands, The Wolfe Tones, Max Boyce tapes - all wrong probably!

calzino, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:41 (seven years ago)

My dad overdid it on edibles at Red Rocks Dub Fest, got disoriented/zoned out, and had to call for a ride home. True story (that he's too embarrassed to talk about).

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:48 (seven years ago)

My (UK) dad likes Ry Cooder, Steve Earl, John Martyn, he would not enjoy this compilation, though I did hear him once complain that Smashy & Nicey had ruined 'You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet' so maybe there is a glimmer of something there.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:57 (seven years ago)

my concept of dad rock is ABBA

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 22:17 (seven years ago)

this comp has to be trolling, there's no other way

I see what you did there #baggydads

rip van wanko, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 22:19 (seven years ago)

I’m a dad and I love “Start Me Up.”

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 22:20 (seven years ago)

If my dad liked rock he'd probably be into Blue Oyster Cult so I'm voting for Reaper. + They feel like the daddiest band on this list.

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 22:22 (seven years ago)

Honestly I think of today's dad rock as being more like Wilco.

― i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:20 (one hour ago)

Yes. When I started hearing the term dad rock Wilco was the headlining act. Dad rock was known to be that mellow adult alternative/indie sound that would often appeal to smart (dressed nicely) types because of difficult guitar playing.

He said captain, I said wot (FlopsyDuck), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:05 (seven years ago)

Dad Rock for me was Chubby Checker.

clemenza, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:12 (seven years ago)

i don't like the term "dad rock" on account of how gendered it is
lots of moms & grandmas & women who have not reproduced like these songs too
it's just a way of making fun of old people :(

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:14 (seven years ago)

if we can't make fun of people who aren't us for enjoying things we also like, are we even talking about music

kelp, clam and carrion (sic), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:15 (seven years ago)

i don't find it necessary but whatever floats yr boat i guess

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:19 (seven years ago)

I thought it was sort of understood to be a silly term and ppl here are just having fun w/it...

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:21 (seven years ago)

my concept of Dad Rock based on my own dead Dad is Irish Showbands, The Wolfe Tones, Max Boyce tapes - all wrong probably!

Yeah, my own Dad wouldn't last five seconds into any of these songs. I mostly try to form conclusions from my observations of white Dads.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:23 (seven years ago)

White Dads has prob'ly been used a few times as a band name

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:25 (seven years ago)

It's also in the title of the compilation album this poll is based on, so kind of hard to avoid using it?

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:26 (seven years ago)

i'm not accusing anyone of wrongdoing i just think it's a shitty term
i don't care if you want to discuss this continuously for a year or even longer

the dads i know were mostly young punks so i guess i'd vote for the clash song (bonus if it segued directly into the BAD song)

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:28 (seven years ago)

Btw, I wasn't suggesting that it's impossible for older men to like Imagine Dragons. (It wouldn't surprise me if my fiancée's Mum listens to them fwiw.) I just doubt that's the primary demographic of their audience, which is what "Dadrock" implies to me.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:35 (seven years ago)

I'm still sort of "gobsmacked" (if I'm using that properly) to learn that Led Zeppelin are not really popular in the UK...

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:47 (seven years ago)

Like even without the "Classic Rock" radio format -- they weren't popular at the time? As an "album band"?

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:49 (seven years ago)

As an album band of course, but the Now That's Blah Blah Blah comps are based on Top 40 singles afaik.

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:52 (seven years ago)

I first remember the term Dadrock being used to invoke latter day Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene and sort of earnest grunting 'authentic' meaningful stuff with copious tasty guitar solos beloved of sundry ageing indie/mod types. It seems it might be different in the US though. I don't know where it came from originally.

RFI: What is Dadrock?

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 00:00 (seven years ago)

Is any genre "proveably real"?

luv it!

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 00:03 (seven years ago)

fwiw as the creator of my thread my mom likes all of these songs and my dad likes ABBA and Blondie

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 00:09 (seven years ago)

My dad's favourite songs were "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" by Ian Dury and "Love Is In the Air" by John Paul Young (a particular favourite of dads I've found) and some Scottish folks, Irish rebel songs.

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 00:14 (seven years ago)

(Scottish folk songs, not Scottish folks)

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 00:15 (seven years ago)

I have 3 kids and on road trips in our Honda Odyssey I make my kids listen to Can and Faust. My 6 year old daughter loves Amon Duul II, particularly the Yeti album.

will it be a sad day for you when one day she matures enough for "wolf city" to be her favorite

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 01:56 (seven years ago)

my strongest memory of my dad is being in the car with him and frankie ford's "sea cruise" coming on the radio and him suddenly howling like a banshee

i was very scared, thought he got his hand stuck in the car door or something

now that i am his age i can kind of get behind his reaction

he also owned a lot of flatt & scruggs and janis joplin records

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 01:58 (seven years ago)

As a mid-50s dad I voted Deep Purple with confidence.

When I think of my dad I think of Scorpions' The Wind of Change so it gets my vote even though it's not in the list.

Avril and Natalie are Something For The Dads innit
