casiotone for the painfully alone

there's no way a mind which thinks that's an acceptable band name could ever be anything other than 100% contemptible

lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 12:09 (seventeen years ago)

casiotone for the painfully alone at least is ridiculous AND funny.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 12:21 (seventeen years ago)

I swear I read someplace that said cold play is a "random sequencing" of any particular thing. Like...if radio DJ played an arbitrary shuffle of songs, "a cold play of Lilly Allen, AC/DC, etc etc..."

Can't recommend quoting me on that.

╓abies, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 12:25 (seventeen years ago)

Pissed Jeans is pretty bad, but yeah, AIDS Wolf is not only the worst of all the Wolf names, but also the worst band name ever.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 12:31 (seventeen years ago)

Um. Yeah if taking those names at face value is your stance then I guess so.

╓abies, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 12:41 (seventeen years ago)

Coldplay are a hangover from the 90s school of Brit indie band naming ie - "make sure your band has a name with as few connotations as possible". See also Blur.

I think I prefer this to new-skool Google-friendly band names.

Tits Bramble (Matt DC), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

but coldplay is about the most google-friendly name imaginable. or do you think you will find one page with coldplay on it where it doesn't stand for the band?

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 13:12 (seventeen years ago)

I always liked the supposed origins of the name AIDS Wolf (IIRC an urban myth about rabid wolves wandering into big cities and transmitting AIDS) but got the impression with the band, especially after limited interaction with them, that they were more the type who'd be mouthing "that's right, we went there" after telling you their name

Met this dude at a party a few months ago. Haven't heard the music, but he seemed like a nice guy.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 15:31 (seventeen years ago)

cruiserweight. as it turns out they're a pretty dope little poppy punk band.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

Um. Yeah if taking those names at face value is your stance then I guess so.

Understanding the backstory to AIDS Wolf's name makes it only marginally more tolerable. My reaction to these is slightly mysterious I suppose, as I don't have any problem with Dead Kennedies, which is pretty offensive. I think DJ Mencap has nailed it though.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

He is a nice guy, he and my sis used to work together in SF and I've chatted with him a few times.

AIDS Wolf are actually pretty cool people.

Saw Casiotone for the Painfully Alone in a basement in Mid-Missouri and I liked it. Not buying any records any time soon.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:44 (seventeen years ago)

"Here We Go Magic" is a band name?

There was some really lazy student journalism on display when the band Cave played in town a few weeks ago (a band that formed in this town and that anyone with any kind of relationship to the local music scene could have made a comment on) and the blurb in the back of the paper just said "I can't google this band but someone told me they were worth seeing so I guess you should go." The price I pay for living in a town with an unusually high student journalism population.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:48 (seventeen years ago)

student journalisT pop.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:49 (seventeen years ago)

if i was writing a live show calender full of silly soundbytes i would not be ashamed at all to write that about a band with a googleproof one-word name. i dunno if the blurbs in that particular paper are more factual/serious as a rule, though.

moonshipley journey to baja fresh (some dude), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:50 (seventeen years ago)

Guess I was just butthurt cuz I used to be in the band, lol.

haha

moonshipley journey to baja fresh (some dude), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

i think it's a pretty dumb blurb

What's ridiculous about the name Radiohead?

It was a terrible name for a SONG

tuppence d bag (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:59 (seventeen years ago)

Terrible? Seriously?? It just sort of sits there not drawing attention to itself imo.

there's no way a mind which thinks that's an acceptable band name could ever be anything other than 100% contemptible.

awww this is so wrong - its ridiculous and funny and, most importantly, accurately encapsulates the music (which, at least at the outset) was this very lovingly constructed miserablist/minimalist keyboard pop (composed and performed solely on cheap keyboards). I love Owen, good guy.

Wrinkles, I'll See You On the Other Side (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 20:30 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I never took offense to that name. It seems appropriately self-effacing and accurate.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

Another one I could never bring myself to listen to, but not just because of the name - the covers were pretty dire too: Dayglo Abortions.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

x-posts Yes to Shakey re: CftPA

I really like the one Casiotone album I own a lot and he was charmingly awkward and funny when I saw him a couple years ago. I don't know how anyone could hear that name and not realize that it's v funny.

TAT THY SAD EAGLE (ENBB), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

hearing or seeing the band plays into your opinion - I thought "I love you but I've chosen darkness" was a really funny band name until I discovered they had no sense of humor

鬼の手 (Edward III), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

' I thought "I love you but I've chosen darkness" was a really funny band name until I discovered they had no sense of humor'
this made me laugh so perhaps you should forgive them their horrible earnestness?

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

re: CFTPA

I also always loved how he consistently referred to CFTPA as a "band" onstage, in the plural, etc. even tho it was just one guy. ("Hi we're Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. This song is called "Casiotone for the Painfully Alone Joins the Foreign Legion".)

Wrinkles, I'll See You On the Other Side (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

Anal Cunt & Does It Offend You, Yeah? FTW. Haha, kinda two sides to the same coin, methinks.

Margot & The Nuclear So-And-So's is not only ridiculous but half-assed at the same time.

we hug you (Tape Store), Friday, 29 May 2009 07:21 (seventeen years ago)

Anal Cunt is totally appropriate for the music though.

Radiohead is one of those names that you've spent enough time around to not even really consider. Actually thinking about it though, yeah, it's pretty lame. Definitely retains a whiff of the 90's.

I still kind of wish Eyehategod was just called I Hate God. That's a name.

I don't have any idea whether ...And You WIll Know Us By The Trail Of Our Dead is actually worth contemplating at all but their name really irks me. Way too many words to say very little.

One more vote for Casiotone... actually being a decent act though. Never met the guy. His music seems sincere enough.

viborg, Thursday, 15 April 2010 00:33 (sixteen years ago)

Pretty much any band name that begins with an ellipsis isn't going to sit well with me.

viborg, Thursday, 15 April 2010 00:35 (sixteen years ago)

Casiotone does have that cleverness ingredient that irks so many people. Yet I like the name.

Architecture in Helsinki is silly, and slightly condescending, like Helsinki is exotic, no? There's a worse one along these lines, although noone has heard of them: Village of Savoonga. Dude, it's a little village up in Alaska!!

vIborg you added a word, and either way most people just say "Trail of Dead," if that helps.

Evan, Thursday, 15 April 2010 01:55 (sixteen years ago)

Sure it does, I think it was actually the implication of "our dead" that I misinterpreted which was really bugging me. Thanks for clarifying...reading up on them they sound half-decent - maybe I'll give them a shot after I clear a couple hundred songs out of my New folder.
