I think Home by the Sea is weirdly sad.

Has anyone on here ever actually seen this movie? The clips in the video fascinated me as a child, it looked so dramatic! But I suspect it's not that good.
― Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 1 July 2018 03:36 (seven years ago)
another day in paradise tho
― J. Sam, Sunday, 1 July 2018 04:31 (seven years ago)
"Misunderstanding," easy.
My first reaction was "Like It Or Not is sadder than any of these" but I looked it up and that's a Rutherford song!

You don't need to see the movie, just watch the video, it's awesome.
It's Jeff Bridges and James Woods in a Phil Collins video.
― earlnash, Sunday, 1 July 2018 14:16 (seven years ago)
I adore 'Against All Odds' so going with that. There's a subtle little drum fill on the chorus that just kills me.
― campreverb, Sunday, 1 July 2018 15:37 (seven years ago)
I like a lot of these songs more than "Against All Odds," but voting that one because I always thought the "you're the only one who ever / really knew me at all" line is genuinely sad in a way pop music songs about breakups rarely are. Like, if someone said that to you irl, you'd have to be one cold ass motherfucker for it to not break your heart
of course, I could also see a calculating, manipulative sociopath using that line to great success, so now back to our regularly scheduled nihilism
― Paul Ponzi, Sunday, 1 July 2018 15:54 (seven years ago)
someone needs to post a link to the misbegotten interpretive dance Oscars performance.

I've never seen Against All Odds, how closely does it stick to Out of the Past?

When it comes to Collins' solo career, I guarantee that his saddest song is only a fraction as sad as the person listening to it.
― Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Sunday, 1 July 2018 22:04 (seven years ago)
ooh good one

I used to hear "Taking It All Too Hard" on AOR radio through the mid nineties and assumed it was a massive pop hit.
Isn't there a song about someone doing a hit-and-run on We Can't Dance?

Agreed -- Phil was clearly going thru some serious shit around that time. Tough times for Phil.
Also a pretty good argument that "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)" is his best vocal performance.
― Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 6 July 2018 18:25 (seven years ago)
I believe that is true.

― Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 6 July 2018 19:26 (seven years ago)
Watched the video again, film looks like a sappy Romancing The Stone knock-off. Should I shell out 3 bucks to stream it?
― Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 6 July 2018 19:35 (seven years ago)
I think it's more like Glenn Frey 80s L.A. noir a la Tequila Sunrise or a less pulpy Indecent Proposal.
― ... (Eazy), Friday, 6 July 2018 20:26 (seven years ago)
Ebert review:
The movie has a lot of muted social criticism in it, involving professional sports and ecology. The Jane Greer character has a plan to destroy several beautiful canyons to build houses. The Bridges character is a victim of unfair labor practices. And so on. Sometimes we get the idea we're watching a clone of "Chinatown" -- but not with that jealous triangle. Woods is the villain, so he does smoke, of course. But Bridges and Ward are so consumed with passion, they don't even need to.

i was also hugely peeved when this film didn't turn out to be the gritty reinvention of vérité we'd been promised in the trailers
