You couldn’t listen to the one song you haven’t heard before voting?

heard it now, still go with boo'd up

Jang Mo Jib (Ross), Saturday, 30 June 2018 18:27 (seven years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Sunday, 1 July 2018 00:01 (seven years ago)

wow didn’t expect such a huge gap. i guess most ilxors voted w/o hearing otw but i still expected i like it to do better. same poll on twitter was basically a 3-way tie

flopson, Sunday, 1 July 2018 03:57 (seven years ago)

a song i like didn't do as well as i thought it would so therefore most people didn't listen to it

dyl, Sunday, 1 July 2018 06:08 (seven years ago)

Lol people were literally posting in this thread that they didn’t listen to it

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 1 July 2018 06:17 (seven years ago)

travesty

Simon H., Sunday, 1 July 2018 06:25 (seven years ago)

||||||||, Sunday, 1 July 2018 06:30 (seven years ago)

I listened to it but it’s no boo’d up.

sub in 'taste' for 'i like it' make this a fair fight

def otw

johnny crunch, Thursday, 9 August 2018 21:06 (seven years ago)

Here in the UK Boo'd Up has done nothing and it is astonishing to me. I keep putting it on at parties and it's a head turner - I've twice seen people who've never heard it start singing along during the first chorus - I don't understand why it hasn't transferred to this side of the ocean?

boxedjoy, Thursday, 9 August 2018 21:30 (seven years ago)

Isn't she from London? I just assumed she's a hero there.

There was an article in the guardian about her being huge in the USA and unknown in the UK - https://www.theguardian.com/music/2018/aug/02/ella-mai-bood-up-r-and-b-charts-number-1

The comments below the line are some of the worst guardian music comments of all time, and that's like being the worst strain of bubonic plague, but might be instructive about why she isn't big here, if you have a particularly high tolerance for pricks on the internet.

diana gordon’s “wolverine” a strong contender for late summer langurous vibes jam

||||||||, Monday, 20 August 2018 07:00 (seven years ago)

shame that OTW wasn't as a big of a hit as the other two, it's the one i've been playing the most lately

ufo, Monday, 20 August 2018 07:17 (seven years ago)

the other two were very immediate but OTW has really grown on me

Scritti Vanilli - The Word Girl You Know It's True (dog latin), Monday, 20 August 2018 08:04 (seven years ago)

i feel like "otw" had a bit more potential than it ended up realizing but i didn't hear it on the radio until months after it had already come out. (see also its late video release)

dyl, Monday, 20 August 2018 08:12 (seven years ago)

“Wolverine” is excellent!

Tim F, Monday, 20 August 2018 08:37 (seven years ago)

The rest of the Diana Gordon EP is a bit of a mixed bag but "Too Young" is like Fearless songwriting with Reputation production values.

Tim F, Tuesday, 21 August 2018 00:50 (seven years ago)

Heard boo’d up in the mall

What a song

Ross, Tuesday, 21 August 2018 03:14 (seven years ago)

def not "I Like It"

I have come around to this one. Good summer song. But also yes re: reminders of Burger King commercials in the '90s.

Ultimately I stand beside my "Boo'd Up" vote.

platonic ideal of a pop song

ba-dum, boo'd up

rap is dad (it's a boy!), Saturday, 13 October 2018 02:35 (seven years ago)

I like Boo’d Up.
It’s weird though.
She’s had a fair amount of similarish sounding cuts that generated little buzz.
Like somebody at the label suddenly went, ok that’s enough bubble, next mustard track with some bounce and a hard snare will be the hit, you can now come out as British and not Floetry notsureiftheyrefakingit British.

tsrobodo, Saturday, 13 October 2018 05:10 (seven years ago)

Listening to "OTW" for the first time as the result of this thread, and, gosh, that is a sumptuous 4 minutes of music. The beat is, like, holographic, the way that old Jam & Lewis productions used to sound compared to their contemporaries. Like you know how they had an improbably long career where they just kept successfully updating their sound to the times for several decades? This is what I imagine they'd be up to if that streak were still going.
A travesty that this never made it to top40 radio, especially when Khalid is such a hot property right now (apparently) off the back of comparatively beige material like "Eastside" and "Love Lies". Maybe the guests/producers on those were just higher priorities for the labels to get over than 6lack and Nineteen85, idk

You're all losing so many points on your progress bars (Champiness), Saturday, 13 October 2018 22:14 (seven years ago)

it is truly an incredible production

i heard it on the radio for the 3rd time, like, ever this past week -- sounded incredible there and still a bit astonished it never completely took off. i guess his team was more focused on pushing the song with normani or something.

dyl, Sunday, 14 October 2018 17:39 (seven years ago)

boo'd up was actually cut by several difft artists but never released before ella mai picked it up--some people apparently seemed confident it was a hit. it does sound strangely out of time though, like something that could have been equally huge eight years ago

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 15 October 2018 04:59 (seven years ago)

four weeks pass...

since it doesn't appear to have been discussed anywhere else i am going to say very belatedly that the entire diana gordon ep is pretty strong!

dyl, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 00:25 (seven years ago)

Yeah, big shout out to Kool Aid.

whats the 2019 version of this poll?

flopson, Sunday, 30 June 2019 00:04 (six years ago)

talk • con altura • the london ?

dyl, Sunday, 30 June 2019 15:16 (six years ago)

maybe sub "go loko" in for one of those idk

dyl, Sunday, 30 June 2019 15:26 (six years ago)

I don’t like go loko or the London really ...

Go loko I’m pretty sure ripped off ambjaay’s uno and he’s a better rapper

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Sunday, 30 June 2019 15:40 (six years ago)

Swap “Aute Culture” for “Con Altura”! Much much much better track.

Consider the coconut (morrisp), Sunday, 30 June 2019 15:45 (six years ago)

there's no big r&b jam of this summer so far, is there? at least on the level of boo'd up.

mott the hoopleheads (voodoo chili), Sunday, 30 June 2019 15:57 (six years ago)

"talk" was the closest i could come up with but it definitely tries to straddle styles a little w/ that production
