Ray BarrettoHard HandsFANIA
Killer funky latin album featuring "Hard Hands", "Abidjan" and the cult classic "Love Beads" ( a jazz dance classic!). Alongside "Acid" this is Ray Barretto's most complete album from the early 1970's. Essential Recommendation!

Oh, and here's one of the best I've heard this year---amazing how much he finds in songs I'd never cared about, like "Eleanor Rigby" and "Midnight Mover," and other selections are as good-to-great as hoped (except the Meters cover, which so far seems redundant, at a distance, although the Meters weren't there that night, so there and then I woulda said hey keep on killin it club band). Guitar, organ, drums=full orchestra here.

Dennis CoffeyOne Night At Morey’s: 1968Release date: June 8, 2018
Previously unissued live set from Detroit in 1968.From his early work with ’50s/’60s hit makers The Royaltones (who also backed other artists like Del Shannon)—to his run through the Motor City’s independent labels as a session ace—to his pioneering and legendary work with The Funk Brothers, backing band to massive Motown hits like “Just My Imagination,” “Ball Of Confusion (That’s What The World Is Today),” “War,” “Cloud Nine,” “Someday We’ll Be Together” and “Band Of Gold” among many others—Dennis Coffey is a guitar legend.
The ’70s didn’t slow him down for one second as he struck out on his own and had a million selling hit with “Scorpio,” in 1971. He continued his studio session work (notably appearing on “Boogie Fever” by The Sylvers), scored films and produced other artists’ albums like Gallery’s Nice To Be With You and Rodriguez’ Cold Fact.
The 2000s have found Dennis appearing on the big screen including the 2002 film Standing In The Shadows Of Motown and the 2012’s Searching For Sugarman. And to this very day you can find him playing every Tuesday night in Detroit.
One Night At Morey’s: 1968 is drawn from the residency at Morey Baker’s Showplace Lounge in Detroit by the Lyman Woodard Trio. The trio consisted of Coffey on guitar, brilliant organist, Lyman Woodard, and drummer Melvin Davis, and could be found at Morey’s once a week. They played to a dedicated, often repeat, audience so the band kept the repertoire fresh and changing. One Night At Morey’s: 1968 follows last year’s Hot Coffey In The D: Burnin’ At Morey Baker’s Showplace Lounge released by Resonance Records, also drawn from the Morey’s residency, but with an entirely different track list.
All tracks on One Night At Morey’s: 1968 are previously unissued and come directly from the vaults of Dennis Coffey and producer partner, Mike Theodore. Tracks include original compositions, “Big City Lights,” “Mindbender,” and “Union Station,” as well as surprising and funky covers of “Billie’s Bounce” by Charlie Parker, “Burning Spear” by The Soul Strings, “Cissy Strut” by The Meters, “Eleanor Rigby” by The Beatles, “Groovin’” by The YoungRascals, and “I’m A Midnight Mover” by Wilson Pickett from the pen of both Pickett and Bobby Womack.

Still hoping that things getting reissued are coming outon cd though seems like so much stuff is just lp/dl.Would still love physical copies of teh van Morison 70s catalogue. & the PSF stuff on cd.

Judging by discogs, most of Van's 70s have come out on CD, I think, though some must be due for reremastering now. Would especially like to get discs of It's Too Late To Stop Now, Saint Dominic's Preview, and Into The Music. The 2-CD The Story of Them Featuring Van Morrison is incredible. The Bang Masters is a fun CD, being more what he had in mind for his early solo tracks (somewhat messed-with by the suits on first release).

All of Morrison's albums have been on CD at one time or another, it's just that a lot of them are OOP now, partially due to a couple stalled/slow moving reissue campaigns.
― Making Plans For Sturgill (C. Grisso/McCain), Saturday, 30 June 2018 23:53 (five years ago) link
I was thinking especially of the recent reissues of his material. I think everything came out as paid for downloads and i hoped that the individual lps might appear as cds. It's Too Late To stop Now came out as a reissue of its original triple lp and also added another set with a couple of cds and a dvd of the Rainbow performance that I think is partially on the original lps. I missed the St Dominic's Preview from the 2006 reissue campaign which only appeared to be around for a short while anyway. Think I missed a couple of others too. & my Veedon Fleece from that time got a bit scratched because of it being mishandled. So definitely looking for remasters of the 70s stuff, maybe Common one.
There was a recent reissue of the them material too adding a 3rd cd with BBC stuff on. I managed to pick that up in a sale somewhere. Astral Weeks & Band and Street choir were both reissued by whatever label had rights only to them out of the back catalogue. Moondance got a several disc reissue a few years ago. I think Tupelo Honey came out too.
but it was mainly wondering if the physical counterparts to the digital downloads were going to happen.& preferably on cd but is that format becoming defunct?

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of “Raindances”, a 2 CD anthology featuring every track from the four albums released by Gryphon on the Transatlantic label between 1973 and 1975.
One of the most original groups to emerge in the Progressive era, Gryphon came together at the instigation of Royal College of Music students Richard Harvey and Brian Gulland, initially as a vehicle to fuse traditional English music with Medieval and Renaissance music influences. Utilising various traditional instruments such as Crumhorns, Recorders, Bassoons and Mandolins, Gryphon expanded with the addition of Graeme Taylor on guitar and Dave Oberle on drums and percussion.Singing to Transatlantic Records, Gryphon released their eponymous debut album in June 1973, adorned in a striking cover designed by Dan Pearce. The uniqueness of their musical style led to a commission to write a score for a stage production of The Tempest in 1974, parts of which formed the band’s next album, “Midnight Mushrumps”, released in April 1974. By this time bass guitarist Philip Nestor had joined the fold, and the band began to explore more progressive influences (with the album’s title track being an 18 minute opus).
The progressive rock influences became even more apparent on Gryphon’s acclaimed third album, “Red Queen to Gryphon Three”, released in December 1974. The album was one of the most successful of Gryphon’s career and the diversity of their music saw Gryphon earn the distinction of being the first artists to appear on all four BBC radio networks in one week. During this time Gryphon also toured as the support act to the legendary band YES, gaining new followers as a result. “Raindance” was Gryphon’s final album for Transatlantic Records. Issued in 1975, the record saw Philip Nestor replaced by Malcolm Bennett and was another successful record.
“Raindances” gathers together all the material from Gryphon’s four albums recorded for Transatlantic Records and has been newly re-mastered from the original master tapes. This anthology features an illustrated booklet with an essay by Malcolm Dome and includes exclusive interviews with Richard Harvey, Brian Gulland, Graeme Taylor and Dave Oberle.

ET SHOP BOYS ANNOUNCE FOURTH AND FINAL SET OF RELEASES IN CATALOGUE: 1985-2012, THE LANDMARK SERIES OF REISSUES OF THEIR PARLOPHONE STUDIO ALBUMS
The Albums Behaviour, Very And Bilingual Will Be Remastered And Reissued With 'Further Listening' Albums Of Additional Bonus Material
Reissues Out August 31 From Rhino
LOS ANGELES - Pet Shop Boys will release the final set of albums in their definitive CATALOGUE: 1985-2012 series of reissues of all their Parlophone studio albums. This fourth batch of releases will see the PSB albums Behaviour from 1990, the 1993 album Very and the 1996 album Bilingual reissued on August 31. The albums have been remastered and repackaged, and will be accompanied by 'further listening' albums of master quality bonus tracks - including demos, extended mixes and remixes of tracks from the albums and others created in the same period as each record. Behaviour was Pet Shop Boys' fourth studio album, recorded mostly in Munich, Germany at co-producer Harold Faltermeyer's studio. The album was then completed at London's Sarm West Studios, and was released in October 1990 - hitting number 2 on the UK Album Chart and going on to earn platinum certification in the UK. The LP is seen by some as one of Pet Shop Boys' most contemplative and moving records, and features the singles "So Hard," 'How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously?' and their classic track "Being Boring." This catalogue release of Behaviour features 'further listening' bonus tracks such as an extended mix of "Where The Streets Have No Name (I Can't Take My Eyes Off You)" and an ambient mix of "Music For Boys" - both of which are previously unreleased on CD. The 1993 album Very was a number one record for Pet Shop Boys in the UK, Germany, Sweden and Switzerland, and has to date sold in excess of five million copies worldwide. It contains 5 singles, including their cover of "Go West" - a number 2 hit for PSB - and lead single "Can You Forgive Her?" Stylistically, Very could be said to serve as an antithesis to Behaviour, insofar as the production and lyrical themes are generally more upbeat and positive than those of the previous album. PSB also reinvented their image to incorporate more vivid colors and brightness, including Very's now-iconic "Lego" album cover. The album is also the first to be produced almost entirely by Pet Shop Boys themselves - with additional programming and production courtesy of Pete Gleadall and Stephen Hague. This CATALOGUE: 1985-2012 issue of Very includes a 'further listening' disc of bonus material, such as the previously-unreleased tracks "Falling" (a demo for Kylie Minogue), and a 1992 twelve-inch mix of "Go West." Released in September 1996, Bilingual was the sixth studio album to be released by Pet Shop Boys. It was a UK top 5 record upon release and included 5 singles, all of which were UK Top 20 singles. As is often the case with PSB records, Bilingual comprises many influences, including those of the music of Latin America, due partly to the Spanish and Latin music Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe had been listening to prior to recording the album. The album was recorded by PSB with Danny Tenaglia and Chris Porter, and has since gained platinum certification in Spain, and Gold in the UK. This CATALOGUE: 1985-2012 release of Bilingual includes a 'further listening' CD of bonus tracks, with previously-unreleased new versions of "Discoteca" and "A Red Letter Day." The CATALOGUE: 1985-2012 reissues of Behaviour, Very and Bilingual will go on sale August 31. The three albums will be packaged with an extensive booklet in which Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe discuss each song, illustrated with many archive photographs. The entire project is designed by Farrow. The CATALOGUE: 1985-2012 reissue series began last year with the release of Nightlife, Release, and Fundamental, followed by re-issues of Yes and Elysium and later Please, Actually, and Introspective. The reissues of Please, Actually, Introspective, Behaviour, Very, and Bilingual were originally released with bonus 'further listening' albums in 2001 and are being newly remastered with their original track-listings for this project. Arthur RussellThe World Of Arthur RussellSOUL JAZZ RECORDS
New fully remastered re-release of Soul Jazz Records’ ‘The World of Arthur Russell’, the seminal collection of Arthur Russell’s essential music is being released on limited-edition heavy deluxe triple vinyl and deluxe CD edition.
This album brings together some of Russell’s best-loved and most accessible works including his wide-ranging music both solo and in groups including Dinosaur L (the essential ‘Go Bang’), Loose Joints (the equally classic ‘Is It All Over My Face’) as well as rarities such as the 7” only ‘Pop Your Funk’, Indian Ocean’s ‘Schoolbell/Treehouse’, Lola’s ‘Wax The Van’ and more.
Arthur Russell’s music effortlessly crossed musical boundaries making it timeless. His dance music credentials are faultless and this collection features mixes from Larry Levan, Françcois Kervorkian and Walter Gibbons. Similarly, his song-writing, musicality and performance skills are equally cherished as composer Philip Glass wrote, ‘this was a guy who could sit down with a cello and sing with it in a way that no one on earth has ever done before or will do again.’
When Soul Jazz Records’ The World of Arthur Russell first came out in 2003, Russell’s music had slipped into near obscurity. Nearly 15 years later there are over a dozen releases of his music, reissues of his original albums and more. ‘The World of Arthur Russell’ is the classic first collection of his work available once more.
“Arthur Russell fused the avant-garde with disco and sounds like nothing else on earth.” The GUARDIAN
“Russell is the great enigma of the New York music scene” THE WIRE

Step By Step: Time After Time b/w Now She’s Gone
45/Stream http://www.numerogroup.com/products/step-by-step-time-after-time-bw-now-shes-gone
Soaring falsetto lead from 13-year-old Johnnie Gee, who, alongside brothers Jerome and Dewitt and a handful of kids from their Milwaukee stomping grounds, formed Step By Step in 1969. Gee and company’s 1972 sweet soul double sider for Jim Kirchstein’s regional powerhouse Cuca Records is among the rarest singles produced by the Sauk City outfit over its 13-year run, barely making it outside of Wisconsin before appearing on 2007’s Home Schooled: The ABCs of Kid Soul album. Step By Step’s “Time After Time” has since become a highly sought after single on the low rider circuit, and was prominently featured in season two of Aziz Ansari’s breakout Netflix series Master of None. Both sides have been remastered from the original analog Cuca 1/4" tape, with two previously unreleased songs tacked onto the digital version.
Scientists: Weird Love
LP/Stream http://www.numerogroup.com/products/scientists-weird-love
Unhinged Aussie grunge captured just as the Scientists were imploding/attempting to explode. Recorded over three days in February 1986, Weird Love is the band’s last ditch effort to bring their bad vibes to bedrooms the world over, a colossal failure and brilliant mistake that sounds best when blasting out of a 1982 Corolla’s blown Alpine tweeters.
Teen Expo: The Cleopatra Label
2LP/CD/Stream http://www.numerogroup.com/products/teen-expo-the-cleopatra-label
From a basement in New Jersey, Tommy Falcone remade himself into a DIY Phil Spector. From 1962 to 1970, he founded and ran Cleopatra Records, discovered and mentored young Garden State talent, wrote songs and produced wild studio effects, and quit his day job to promote it all himself. Trained as an accordionist, Falcone had a whirlwind imagination and an omnivorous approach to genre, expressed through acts like the Centuries, the Tabbys, Johnny Silvio, the Inmates, Bernadette Carroll, the Hallmarks, Vickie & the Van Dykes, the Shandillons, Eugene Viscione, the Shoestring, and more. Cleopatra became a time-capsule of every 1960s pop style imaginable—garage rock, psychedelia, surf, girl groups, soul, novelties, exotica, even a crooner—a kaleidoscope of sound in search of the ever-elusive hit record.

We continue our work with the “Godfather Of Ethio Jazz”, Mulatu Astatke, with the first official reissues of his early classics ‘Afro Latin Soul’ Volumes 1 and 2 from 1966, recorded as The Ethiopian Quintet.
The albums were the first experiments in Astatke’s pioneering sound, fusing Ethiopian cultural music with Afro Latin and jazz forms. “I have always felt a deep connection between Latin and African music,” he explains. “I travelled to Cuba and listened to their musicians; the tempo, rhythm and feeling was very similar to different African forms.”
Astatke would start to perfect his Ethio jazz sound on his later album for Worthy in 1972, ‘Mulatu Of Ethiopia’ (STRUT129) but the two volumes of ‘Afro Latin Soul’ stand as important recordings documenting his early career.
‘Afro Latin Soul’ Volumes 1 and 2 come in their full original artwork and are painstakingly remastered by The Carvery. All formats feature personal liner notes by Mulatu Astatke.

Luaka Bop Announces Preacherman Reissue, Universal Philosophy: Preacherman Plays T.J. Hustler’s Greatest Hits, Out October 12th Listen To “Feel It” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35waZLUTbU0&feature=youtu.be
Tim Jones is known by several different monikers; Preacherman, Midi Man and Ironing Board Band to name a few. Though perhaps his most notable is the one that describes him best, T.J. Hustler. In 1979 as T.J. Hustler, Jones self-released one extremely rare LP, Age Of Individualism. In the years since, he’s released two even rarer CD’s as Preacherman, of which the tracks on this forthcoming reissue, Universal Philosophy: Preacherman plays T.J. Hustler’s Greatest Hits (out October 12th on Luaka Bop), are taken.Watch Universal Philosophy Teaser Video — http://youtu.be/S4xHRkwlWUY
n the 1980’s Jones was a technician for IBM in both Las Vegas and San Jose where he repaired Selectric Typewriters and word processors during the day. At night he world perform in the Las Vegas lounges. Thoroughly fascinated by technology and also an engineer in his own right, Jones adapted a Hammond B3 organ to play a Moog synth with some of the organ's keys (some still played the organ) and also adapted the organ's foot controlled bass levers to play two Moog synth bass pedals (a failed item Moog made for a few years). Thinking he wasn't much of a live performer, he had a custom wooden puppet made named T.J. Hustler. Together, Tim Jones/Preacherman and T.J. Hustler would perform long philosophical soliloquies.
These days Jones, (“pronounced JOANZ”, says Tim), is CEO and founder of Up Productions and lives with his 103 year-old mother — the eldest living person in Oakland — in a stunning apartment overlooking Lake Merritt. With his Casio CTK-7200 keyboard, equipped with five wireless mics, a P.A., Jones performs karaoke, easily matching whatever song request you might have. Unfortunately, T.J. Hustler (the puppet) live in a storage unit in Las Vegas, Nevada, along with the modified organ
Perhaps even more so than his first album, Universal Philosophy grants listeners access, virtually for the very first time, to Jones’ outlook, his purpose, and the way he lives and experiences life on this planet. The music presented here is otherworldly, homespun, folk art funk; concise and stream-of-consciousness simultaneously.
Universal Philosophy will be released on vinyl (with gatefold jacket), CD and digital.

Bobbie Gentry 'The Girl From Chickasaw County - The Complete Capitol Masters' Available September 21 Via Capitol/UMeCareer-Defining Deluxe Eight-Disc Box Set Featuring Seven Remastered Studio Albums And A Wealth Of Rarities
Includes 75 Unreleased Recordings And Never Before Issued Live Tracks Taken From Her BBC TV Series
http://www.superdeluxeedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/bobbie_front_alt600-480x480.jpg
In 1967, an enigmatic singer, songwriter and producer named Bobbie Gentry rose out of the Mississippi delta and enchanted audiences around the world with her beautiful, captivating voice and her "Ode To Billie Joe." An unconventional, beguiling song with simple acoustic guitar and sparse production, and notably without a discernible chorus, the song introduced Gentry and her style of storytelling that was very different to the confessional song writing of other emerging female singers. The song caused a lot of commotion as it shot to number one in America and knocked The Beatles' "All You Need Is Love" off the top spot. When the album Ode To Billie Joe was released the following month, it topped the charts and was the only record to displace Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band from its 15-week reign. Over the next several years, Gentry, whose birthday was this past Friday, July 27, released seven studio albums and broke ground in numerous ways as one of the first female musicians to write, produce and even publish her own music. She also produced her elaborate stage shows via her own production company and was the first female singer songwriter to be afforded her own BBC TV series in the UK where she was wildly popular. She became one of the most iconic and influential artists of the 1960s and 70s, and then in the early '80s she made her final appearance and disappeared from the public eye completely, never to return.
Capitol/UMe are proud to announce that on September 21, they will release the first major retrospective of this most groundbreaking artist with The Girl From Chickasaw County – The Complete Capitol Masters, an eight CD box set that includes all seven of Gentry's studio albums sensitively remastered from the original tapes, supplemented by over 75 previously unreleased recordings including her 'lost' jazz album, outtakes, demos, rarities and an eighth disc of live performances taken from her celebrated series for the BBC. The release has specially commissioned cover art by David Downton and includes an 84-page book with a comprehensive essay by boxset compiler Andrew Batt, rare and unseen photos, eight postcards and a facsimile of her original handwritten lyrics for "Ode To Billie Joe." Pre-order The Girl From Chickasaw County now: https://ume.lnk.to/BobbieGentry
Gentry's seven albums for Capitol Records featured some exceptional material. She was an artist who could turn her hand to fit country, folk, soul, pop, Americana, blues and jazz, and this box set brings all the magic together. Pick outs include the classic originals of "Ode To Billie Joe," swamp funk mover "Mississippi Delta" (complete with an alternative version), classy Glen Campbell duet "Mornin' Glory," her definitive cover of "Hushabye Mountain," pop-soul triumph "Fancy," and from her final album, the melancholy "Lookin' In."
In addition, there are superb previously unreleased recordings including originals like "I Didn't Know" and "Joanne" alongside essential covers of "Conspiracy Of Homer Jones," "God Bless The Child," and "Spinning Wheel." Also included are intimate acoustic performances of "The Seventh Son," "Feelin' Good," "Seasons Come, Seasons Go" and "Belinda." For the rarities and obscurities fan, making their appearance on CD/digital for the first time are "La Siepe," Bobbie's Italian-language entry to the 1968 San Remo song festival, UK number one single "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" sung in Spanish, and a little-known duet with Kelly Gordon; "Love Took My Heart And Mashed That Sucker Flat." Lastly there's disc eight featuring live recordings from her BBC TV series, including an inspired pairing of "Niki-Hoeky with Barefootin'," and dazzling takes of "Refractions," "Ode To Billie Joe," "He Made A Woman Out Of Me," and an extended "Your Number One Fan."
Gentry's career blazed brightly for a few short years, but only now is the full extent of her artistry coming into focus. When we think of empowered female stars we think of Beyoncé, Madonna, or even Dolly Parton, but before all of them there came the girl from Chickasaw County. When she emerged in the late 60's women were just starting to make their mark in the music industry, but female identity was polarized between the light entertainment star and the confessional singer-songwriter. Gentry developed her own unique persona, which was a hybrid of both; part creative songwriter, and part musical theatre performer. A storyteller at heart, Gentry created characters and situations that were often inspired by her Southern childhood, and the media and public alike were fascinated by the contrast between her glamorous appearance and the rural simplicity of her origins. Romanticized over time, these stories have coalesced into a classic version of the American dream; a rags-to-riches story that took Gentry from the Delta backwoods to the world's most glittering stages.
Her disappearance intrigues us quite as much as what was thrown from the Tallahatchie Bridge: Why did she disappear? What has she been doing? Where is she now? But 'Where is Bobbie Gentry?' is not the question we should be asking: Gentry was a trailblazer who was years ahead of her time; a successful writer, singer, musician, performer, producer, publisher, and businesswoman. What we should really be asking ourselves is 'Who was Bobbie Gentry?' - The Girl From Chickasaw County provides more answers to that question than ever before, definitively re-appraising the musical legacy of this influential and iconic artist.

Intriguing, but no idea if could sustain my interest for that long (I've got the original Ode To Billy Joe LP; it's okay but overuses the title track instrumental approach just a bit, not on every track though.)
From Drag City, watch out now:
...why, it was just around the time that rock met its end - back in '96 or so - groups around the world were still pushing the musicforward, despite the problem being environmental, which meant that a band like Ghost was taking rock and folk and the traditional sounds of music from before the time of nations and making new things that one might JAM OUT to - but the magnetic pull of the Earth was twisting against their noble actions with a violent, vertiginous pull. Still, they persisted - but following the epic sessions for Lama Rabi Rabi, their fourth album in six years, head Ghost Batoh needed to CHILL - and so he assembled a group to make some good old rock and roll the way it had been when he was growing up. Maybe that's what Cosmic Invention were thinking in their heads or feeling in their hearts---Help Your Satori Mind may be rooted in great American, British and Japanese rock of the 60s and 70s, but it explodes through our speakers like a now sound! After the original release - on, you guessed it, The Now Sound - several Cosmic Inventors joined Batoh back in Ghost, and the CD-only release of Help Your Satori Mind faded into the memory that inspired it in the first place. Now that the past is dead again, it seems a perfect time to push this record into the public eye once more - this time on vinyl, with previously unreleased material! It's OUT NOW and the future is only a moment away - what are you waiting for?

A IS FOR BOXSET (well, technically it's a binder)B IS FOR REBAJAS
..C is for CDs! As in, no Bitchin Bajas release has ever been issued on CD - until this new boxset! Rebajas is the name of the boxset, which collects all their albums up to this point for the first time on non-LP or -CS format - and while the album title doesn't mean what you think it does, the collection does: nearly seven hours of organs, synths, saxes, field recordings, ambience, drone and minimalism, inducing equilibrium with a seemingly limitless onslaught that begs to be thrown into the multi-disc CD changer and NEVER removed! Specially packaged to replicate the eternal essence of listening to Bitchin Bajas, which includes sitting around with a 12" jacket in front of you, Rebajas is definitive, adding via quantitative measures in a way that equals their qualitative streak (still unbroken). There aren't many of these being made (because, you know, CDs) - so don't sleep! Preorder Rebajas today.

Southern Californian groove metal kings DEVILDRIVER are set to reissue revamped editions of their first five albums via BMG on CD on September 28, 2018. Limited edition LP versions will be available as part of Rocktober promotions in the U.S. with DevilDriver, The Fury Of Our Maker's Hand, and The Last Kind Words on October 2 and Pray For Villains and Beast on October 16. For more information and updates, please visit www.devildriver.com.
Formed in Santa Barbara, CA in 2002 when vocalist and frontman Dez Fafara's previous band Coal Chamber were winding down, DEVILDRIVER became Dez's new focus in the world of heavy music. The five-piece have since become a constant and dynamic force in the metal world over the best part of the last two decades. Originally signed to Roadrunner Records, in 2003 the group then featured guitarists Jeff Kendrick and Evan Pitts (who was replaced by Mike Spreitzer later that year), bassist Jon Miller and drummer John Boecklin. It's been a constant uptick for the quintet since they first blasted a hole through the zeitgeist in 2003 with their pivotal self-titled debut. Their almost psychotic dedication to the road is legendary and their mastery of the circle pit beyond dispute. Now their fans can get their hands on their catalogue in revamped, remastered form, with all but one title being pressed on vinyl for the very first time. The five albums being reissued are DevilDriver (originally released in 2003), The Fury Of Our Makers Hand (2005), The Last Kind Words (2007), Pray For Villains (2009) and Beast (2011). The releases have been remastered by Andy Pearce (Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Anthrax, Kreator) and will be available to buy on limited edition colored vinyl and in deluxe CD format, many featuring bonus tracks and all featuring expanded liner notes and exclusive interview material with frontman, Dez Fafara. For all albums, with the exception of Beast, it'll be the first time ever they've been available in vinyl form (each will be limited to 1500 copies in the U.S.). The Fury of Our Makers Hand features six rare bonus tracks, Pray For Villains includes four bonus tracks and Beast includes three additional cuts. Full details and track listings are below.

The Rough Guide To Barrelhouse BluesVarious
Jazz And Blues Legends, RGNET1375CD, 28 September 2018 Barcode: 6.05633E+11Named after the rough and ready bars where labourers gathered to drink and dance, barrelhouse was a raucous form of piano blues that got the juke joints swinging. From early pioneers such as Cow Cow Davenport and Speckled Red to the boogie-woogie legends Pete Johnson and Albert Ammons, this collection charts the rise and incredible influence of this good-time blues.

It was in these rough wooden shacks where the liquor was served directly from the barrels that the piano came into its own, as roving musicians hammered out high-spirited tunes for the drinkers and dancers and got the bar swinging. In turn, the style of up-tempo piano blues that developed in these establishments came to be known as barrelhouse.
The raucous playing style of the opening track by Speckled Red perfectly sets the scene for this rough and ready world, with his classic ‘The Dirty Dozen’ being based on a game of exchanges of insults and vulgar remarks that have long been a part of African-American folklore. In some respects a precursor of rap music, he was told to ‘clean it up for the record’.
Cow Cow Davenport was another key pioneer of the style, and whilst his seminal 1928 recording of ‘Cow Cow Blues’ owed much to a ragtime style, it was perhaps the first recorded example of the style that was to become known as ‘boogie-woogie’, with its infectious left-hand bass pattern and right-hand melodic improvisation. Within months, Clarence “Pinetop” Smith recorded ‘Pinetop's Boogie Woogie’, which was the first known use of the term ‘boogie-woogie’ on a record and cemented the term as the moniker for the genre. Consisting entirely of instructions to dancers, ‘Pinetop's Boogie Woogie’ was adapted by Ray Charles for his song ‘Mess Around’.
Other popular blues pianists to emerge from the barrelhouse circuit include Jimmy Yancey, Roosevelt Sykes and Cripple Clarence Lofton, an artist famed for his energetic stage presence. Although born with a limp, from which he derived his stage name, it could be said that it was somewhat exploitative as he started his career as a tap dancer. Lofton’s rough and ready approach is in great contrast to other featured gems including the precise ragtime-infused playing of Will Ezell on ‘Heifer Dust’ and Walter Roland’s slick accompaniment to ‘Watcha Gonna Do?’, his comical duet with blues diva Lucille Bogan. Leroy Carr was another incredibly influential blues piano pioneer whose life was cut short in 1935 by acute alcoholism, and here he closes out the album with his long-time sidekick Scrapper Blackwell on the fittingly titled ‘Barrelhouse Woman’.

psyched for this, these tapes/records are very cool and super hard to find
Dark Entries is honored to reissue the first 4 full-lengths from Carolyn Fok / CYRNAI, an Asian-American female solo artist from the Bay Area. The 6xLP box set contains all of Carolyn’s officially released music as CYRNAI between 1980-1990, as well as bonus materials. Most of these songs will see their first vinyl appearance ever in a deluxe edition limited boxed set (333 copies). Remastered by George Horn, the set features an exclusive 48-page booklet with photos, quotes, interviews and liner notes written by Carolyn and introduction by Greg Allen (author of ‘Klaus Schulze, Electronic Music Legend’). Over 70 songs, 4 hours of music, spread across six records plus an exclusive bonus 7” of cover songs by The Cure and Gang Of Four all packaged in a black matte wrap box with crimson red foil stamping.
Carolyn’s adventures in sound began with recording stories on a tape recorder at age 9 in 1976. A short time later, exploring the scattering of musical instruments and effects units her father left lying around the family home. She became especially fascinated by his TEAC reel-to-reel recorder that set off a lifelong fascination with sound design. By the age of 16 Carolyn had become inspired by industrial electronic act Cabaret Voltaire, as well as anarcho-punks Crass. Creating the stage name CYRNAI, a rearranging alphabet of Carolyn Fok, she played in several Bay Area bands including Treason, A State Of Mind, Trial and Rhythm & Noise between 1983 and 1991. Her debut release as CYRNAI, 1985’s 12” EP ‘Charred Blossoms’, followed by the cassette albums ‘Parts of The Insomnic Wheel’ in 1986, ‘Hypno-Seizure’ in 1987 and two versions of ‘To Subtle-Drive’ in 1989/1990.
Despite having been featured in publications including Electronic Musician, Keyboard and with a long term association with Industrial music, Carolyn has remained an intensely private musician, artist and writer until now. However, she has launched an ambitious project that involves releasing her vast archive of music as a ‘memoir’ via her website memoirofsound.com. Having spent extensive time in the studio amassing around 100 albums worth of electronic and experimental music, field recordings, collaborations, band projects and more, these are now being released in one place. “Her time is beyond due to be recognized, represented and attributed for her contributions to experimental analogue culture with sounds still fresher than tomorrow.” Eloise Leigh (New Age Rage, Berlin Community Radio)

Good news, thanks! Rock and Roll Queen rounded up some of that, an LP's-worth of singles edits, but don't think it ever did come out on legit CD---The Ballad of Mott prob did, and is a pretty good overview.

Don't think this one came out on CD either! Xgau nails it:Shades of Ian Hunter: The Ballad of Ian Hunter and Mott the Hoople [Columbia, 1979]Exemplary discophilia. The Mott 45s on side one are all the young stiffs--great album tracks edited down for an AM exposure that was rarely forthcoming, they race along with an almost punky punch on LP. The B sides and miscellaneous on side two are uneven, natch, but worth getting to know (as owners of Greatest Hits have already learned with two of them). Those circumspect enough to have passed up Ian's two solo albums are now rewarded with side three's best-of. And side four excerpts the solo Ian that was never released here, to impressive effect. A genuinely obsessive compilation. A-

Atlantic put Rock and Roll Queen out on CD back in the 80s. It's OOP and doesn't sound very good. When Rhino started their Atlantic Remasters series in the 90s, they did those four Mott albums (which Atlantic had in the US,and Island issued everywhere else) plus a new best of that era called Backsliding Fearlessly, which had some rarities as bonuses.
The Ballad of Mott was a two-disc set by Colombia Legacy that mainly focused on their post-Atlantic/Island work, but it did included four tracks (one per album) from that period. And yes, that Shades comp hasn't actually been reissued on CD (although there is another, less in-depth Hunter comp on CD w/that title), although pretty much everything that's on it has been either reissued on its on own or as bonus tracks on Mott/Hunter albums. It is a really good collection, and still can be had on nice vinyl for $5-10.

I should also note that the Atlantic/Island Mott albums have all been OOP for awhile on CD, so this box is most welcome!

Also, Re:Shades--there is nothing from the Atlantic/Island era on it. It starts with "All The Young Dudes" and proceeds in chronological order from there.

Initially released in 2014, Jane Weaver’s The Silver Globe was a conceptual delicacy – a mythical jaunt set to a motorik rhythm, played out in an overgrown forest of ideas. Described in the album’s original press release, it was “a synth-ridden post-apocalyptic prog-pop opus based on tightly embroidered, non-linear recurring themes inspired by esoteric stories, cosmic imagery and re-filtered past experiences.” After a minimal stateside release, Fire Records is now reissuing the album on November 9th on limited-edition clear vinyl with the existing artwork updated by Andy Votel and on CD in a card wallet. Featuring tracks co-produced by David Holmes, guest appearances by Australian vintage space-rockers Cybotron, a recycled chunk of a Hawkwind track, an intricate Damon Gough guitar solo, some Suzanne Ciani waves and post production, plus remix flourishes by Andy Votel, The Silver Globe is a shiny beautifully polished gem. It’s “a full-scale leap into the cosmic void of contemporary space rock” (Quietus). “As a child of the 1970s I can thank my friends’ brothers for their space rock record collections and concept album sleeves that I would spend hours looking at, then my first love for Kate Bush followed by a heavy dose of disco and synth pop,” says Weaver. “I guess The Silver Globe is just a subconscious inspired imprint of those things that have never left me, married with an accidental viewing of a vintage Polish sci-fi film that was so bizarre I couldn’t stop thinking about it and so it became my muse.” Since those heady beginnings, Weaver has been celebrated for her Modern Kosmology, “an album that melds cult cornerstones into a lean and thrillingly addictive slice of unearthly pop” (Guardian). It was named a top 10 album of 2017 by the likes of MOJO, Rough Trade and Drowned in Sound, while the Guardian, Uncut, The Quietus, and Q placed it in their top 25.

Praise for The Silver Globe: "One of those cut-glass, unfailingly true English voices, completely untouchedby even the slightest tinge of R&B, that have the ability to make a song sound likethe soundtrack to a chilly drawing room. . . Weaver’s voice is the key to [The Silver Globe]:she can’t help but add melody, even when what lies beneath is the drone."– The Guardian, 4/5 stars “Atmospheric, deeply odd, funky and wistful, but never less than superb.” – Uncut, 8/10 "The Silver Globe [leaves] no doubt that she is amongst today's most striking sonic auteurs." – MOJO, 4/5 stars “[Jane Weaver’s] main achievement here is the fact that she effortlessly distills aspects of both the early electronic/library music/hauntology craze, and her psych folk grounding, into one highly accessible album. This is no mean feat – while these genres can prove to be notoriously esoteric and abstract, there are inventive moments here which wouldn't sound out of place on mainstream alternative radio.”– All Music, 4.5/5 stars Jane Weaver – Loops In The Secret Society UK Tour Dates:Oct. 17 – The Pleasance, EdinburghOct. 18 – Leaf, LiverpoolOct. 21 – Royal Exchange Theatre, ManchesterOct. 30 – City Varieties, LeedsNov. 6 – Hackney Arts Centre, LondonNov. 7 – Trinity Centre, BristolNov. 8 – Komedia, BrightonNov. 9 – Arts Theatre, Nottingham

BAUHAUS - THE BELA SESSION - “BELA LUGOSI'S DEAD" OFFICIAL REISSUE BY LEAVING RECORDSPre-order available at Stones Throw and Bauhaus' Bandcamp for Nov. 23 release. Official reissue, produced entirely by the band with Leaving Records, and distributed by Stones Throw. The Bela Session captures the first time Bauhaus recorded together, January 26th, 1979, just six weeks after forming as a band. This is the first release of that complete recording session, including three previously unreleased tracks. This also marks the first official reissue of the single “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” on vinyl for over thirty years. The audio has been newly mastered from the original analogue tape by Mandy Parnell at Black Saloon Studios. Bauhaus are a four-piece from Northampton, England: Peter Murphy (vocals), Daniel Ash (guitar), Kevin Haskins (drums), and David J (bass). The band emerged from the post-punk alternative music scene of the early 80s with a string of innovative albums and a powerfully dramatic live presentation. “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” is considered the original gothic rock record and a cornerstone of the specific genre. Originally released as a 12-inch single in August 1979 by Small Wonder Records, “Bela Lugosi's Dead” failed to make the pop charts but remained a staple of the U.K. independent singles chart for many years. “Bela” has widely influenced contemporary goth culture as well as popular culture at large. Among many highlights, a live recording of “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” was the soundtrack to the opening scene of 1983 horror film The Hunger (David Bowie, Catherine Deneuve, and Susan Sarandon); it’s been covered by Nine Inch Nails, Massive Attack, Nouvelle Vague, Chvrches and others; cited as an influence on authors Chuck Palahniuk and Neil Gaiman; used on Saturday Night Live’s skit “Goth Talk”; and the band itself was parodied on Beavis & Butthead and South Park. Three months after releasing “Bela,” the group signed with label 4AD who released their debut album In The Flat Field. They then moved to the larger parent company, Beggars Banquet and between 1981 and 1983 released a further three studio albums, as well as peaking at #15 with their cover of David Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust” in the UK singles chart. After disbanding in 1983, members of the band went on to form Love And Rockets and Tones On Tail while Peter Murphy enjoyed a successful solo career. 40th anniversary: Late 2018 will also mark the ruby anniversary of Bauhaus. Beggars Banquet/4AD will be reissuing records from the band’s catalog on limited edition color vinyl, details to be announced. Leaving Records: a Los Angeles-based label founded in 2008 by Matthew “Matthewdavid” McQueen. Leaving Records has partnered with Stones Throw Records since 2013.Vinyl details: The Bela Session will be issued on 180 gram white vinyl (ltd. 1000) and 180 gram Black vinyl; Printed inner sleeve with facsimile of the recording session's tape box; 20 x 20-inch poster of the original "Bela" 12-inch cover. Pre-order at Stones Throw or Bauhaus Bandcamp. Track List:“Bela Lugosi’s Dead” (9:36)“Some Faces” (2:29) previously unreleased“Bite My Hip ”(2:57) previously unreleased; later reworked, re-recorded as “Lagartija Nick” in 1983 “Harry” (2:56) later released as a B-side in 1982“Boys” (3:03) previously unreleased; later re-recorded and released as the B-side of “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” http://www.stonesthrow.com/news/2018/09/bauhaus

Cherry Red's been on a roll, though this one is a bit too narrow for my tastes compared with their recent punk and post-punk boxes.

From Numero:
Basement Beehive is the product of a dream we had years ago. Feverish from Rhino’s excellent One Kiss Can Lead To Another box, we started making piles of girl group tracks that were mere whispers in the collector abyss. It started out as a Sweet 16 45 box shaped like a birthday cake (replete with a carton of Numero-branded candles). Then it was a series of regional surveys. Finally we boiled it down to a kick-ass mix tape of 28 crucial tracks, with an additional 28 on the compact disc version. That process took four years. The world has fallen apart in less time.
From the work we started on Basement Beehive a dozen other projects have come into focus as well, all collecting the complete output of wildly obscure girl groups, available for your streaming pleasure, and perhaps someday on a physical format. You never know. The important thing is that we found these groups and are telling their stories for the first time. We’re not hoarders of obscurity, nothing has to stay in the basement forever. http://www.numerogroup.com/products/basement-beehive-the-girl-group-underground(2LP, 2CD, various digital formats, also spotify playlist)Who do we become when we live our dreams? It’s all here—the high hairdos, the dreams and schemes, the tender camp, the wedding bell fantasias and chaste tragedies. Sister acts, studio receptionists, classmates, angelic voices of the 1960s; some legendary, many hidden in the basement of expired rainbows. Gathered on this deluxe double CD are 56 (28 on the 2LP) foiled escape attempts, now free to soar in girl group heaven. also streaming mini-setsTrailer, though may have to go via above link, ditto mini-setshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=20&v=sSLz5Z7kU4Q

Just got a new CD of Roscoe Mitchell's Sound in the mail - his debut, and the first AACM-affiliated album, originally released on Delmark in 1966. This new edition features the "Original Analog Mix"; I don't know what that means 'cause I don't have a previous CD edition in the house to compare it with, but I asked Chuck Nessa, who produced the album, so maybe he'll let me know. Anyway, it also includes two bonus tracks, and it's an essential free/avant jazz document, so get one if you're into that stuff.

Mønk is a live album recorded in Denmark in 1963, with Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, John Ore on bass and Frankie Dunlop on drums - one of his best bands IMO. Out today on Gearbox; the tapes were literally found in a dumpster 20 years ago.

CELEBRATING AMERICA'S GREATEST ROCK 'N' ROLL BAND, CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL THE COMPLETE STUDIO ALBUMS (HALF-SPEED MASTERS) 7-LP DELUXE BOX SET AVAILABLE NOVEMBER 30th
The arrival of Creedence Clearwater Revival's 50th anniversary brings an unprecedented celebration of everything the band contributed in their short but startlingly epochal time together (1968 - 1972). To commemorate this milestone, Craft Recordings is releasing a deluxe box set comprising the band's complete seven-album studio output: Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bayou Country, Green River, Willy and the Poor Boys, Cosmo's Factory, Pendulum and Mardi Gras. Each album in this collection has been mastered at half-speed at Abbey Road Studios, benefiting from an exacting process that allows for an exceptional level of sonic clarity and punch, bringing these classic recordings a new vibrancy. The 180-gram LPs come housed in handsome tip-on jackets replicating the packaging of the original pressings. Along with the complete studio album collection comes an 80-page book featuring new liner notes from music journalist Roy Trakin, archival photos and reproductions of band ephemera - offering something for both new and the most diehard of Creedence fans. Using high-res transfers from the original analog tapes, the half-speed mastering process involves playing back audio at half its recorded speed while the cutting lathe is turned at half the desired playback speed. The technique allows more time to cut a micro-precise groove, allowing more accuracy with frequency extremes and dynamic contrasts. Abbey Road Studios' award-winning engineer Miles Showell explains, "I've tried to be as authentic as I could, and just make it sound like music. Not over-hyped, not over-processed. Up until now a lot of processing has been done on these recordings, so my approach was to strip them right back and just expose them for what they are - because what they are is great music." Although the band members were together for only four years under the Creedence Clearwater Revival appellation, they managed to accomplish more than many artists do in a lifetime. Powered by John Fogerty's visceral growl, along with Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook and Doug Clifford's gritty, in-the-pocket punch, they've sold over 30 million records in the U.S. alone, releasing 14 Top 10 hits, six Platinum albums (two of which went to number one) and one Gold album. They also managed to play over 150 tour dates around the world, including a headlining spot at Woodstock. Over the last 50 years, Creedence Clearwater Revival's canon has become a part of the Great American Songbook. Songs like "Bad Moon Rising," "Down on the Corner," "Fortunate Son," "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?," "Proud Mary," "Born on the Bayou," "Travelin' Band" and "Up Around the Bend" have been ingrained into pop culture - not just as rock staples, but as classic standards. This hardworking band offered beautifully simple and relatable music for the every-man or -woman. Blue-collar Americans saw their experiences and sociopolitical concerns reflected in Creedence's class-conscious broadsides ("Run Through the Jungle," "Who'll Stop the Rain," "Fortunate Son") and portraits of working class life ("Cotton Fields," "Proud Mary"). In 1993 Creedence Clearwater Revival were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. During his speech honoring the band, Bruce Springsteen noted, "I stand here tonight still envious of that music's power and its simplicity. They were hits filled with beauty and poetry and a sense of the darkness of events, of history. An American tradition shot through with pride, fear and paranoia. They rocked and played great together... they weren't the hippest band in the world, just the best." Creedence also had a gift for transforming other musicians' songs in their own image. Impressive covers of classic tracks from all genres are dotted across their albums; from Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You," Dale Hawkins' "Susie Q" and Little Richard's "Good Golly Miss Molly," to the Leadbelly--popularized, blues-gospel evergreen "Midnight Special" and the Marvin Gaye-popularized Motown hit "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." With so many memorable songs that continue to grace our radio waves and television and movie screens, plus lyrics that still resonate today, Creedence Clearwater Revival is, truly, America's greatest rock 'n' roll band. This lovingly remastered and restored Complete Studio Albums (Half-Speed Masters) box set represents a package worthy of the Creedence legacy, marking 50 years since the Fogertys, Clifford and Cook brought us a body of work that has inspired and electrified generations of fans.
