enjoying the new Khemmis so far. they've played up more of the heavy metal side of their sound though the doom is obv still there.

lots of tasty harmonized guitar leads - rumor has it metalheads like that sort of thing? who knew

Devilock posted a preview of the Morgengrau album upthread and it's out and quite good

Can't link from my phone, but some very serious allegations have been made against Maynard from Tool/APC.

Simon H., Monday, 25 June 2018 17:26 (seven years ago)

jesus fucking christ that is horrible

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Monday, 25 June 2018 17:39 (seven years ago)

I saw APC that same summer and have a rather horrible feeling at the pit of my stomach pondering whether anything might have gone down there.

Simon H., Monday, 25 June 2018 17:43 (seven years ago)

Yeah, I saw that NIN tour too.

On a very different note, I get that Tom can do whatever he wants with his art, but Triptykon are a really fucking good band, and to see them reduced to a "special Celtic Frost set" because human-jukebox shows pay better is a fucking bummer.

grawlix (unperson), Monday, 25 June 2018 18:31 (seven years ago)

Yeah, the 80s kid in me drools over the all-CF set, but Triptykon is plenty exciting on its own.

A. Begrand, Monday, 25 June 2018 18:53 (seven years ago)

Can't find a single link on Maynard's misconduct? :-/

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 25 June 2018 18:57 (seven years ago)

Deep breath. I have to anonymously tell this story because I tried to tell it from my real account and couldn't name him directly out of fear, so I deleted the tweets. Here goes: I was 17 and he was 36. 1/

Thanks Eric, even though I'm sorry I asked now, ugh

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 25 June 2018 19:29 (seven years ago)

that's horrifying not only for what it is but for how many others have behaved like that

imago, Monday, 25 June 2018 20:01 (seven years ago)

There’s some talk here about similar stories that have gone around about Maynard
https://www.reddit.com/r/nin/comments/8tssdl/not_nin_but_a_woman_accused_maynard_keenan_of/

(not that there needs to be more bc that twitter thread is devastating on its own )

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 26 June 2018 01:25 (seven years ago)

On a totally different note, the new Anicon is wonderful - much like the Tomb Mold, a sonic upgrade that sacrifices a little grime and mystery but somehow preserves what makes them great

Simon H., Tuesday, 26 June 2018 03:31 (seven years ago)

Yeah, I love that Anicon. Loved their debut from a couple years ago and this seems even better. That definitely have their own sound.

Devilock, Tuesday, 26 June 2018 12:44 (seven years ago)

That = they.

Visigoth maybe?

Simon H., Thursday, 28 June 2018 14:12 (seven years ago)

Yeah, the Visigoth album is really good. Also Witchfyre and Iron Hunter, two bands from Spain who share a vocalist.

I'm really enjoying the six four-song EPs that Beastmaker (doom trio from Fresno) have put out for $1 each. "Dollar-bin doom" isn't a genre, but based on this, it should be.

grawlix (unperson), Thursday, 28 June 2018 15:06 (seven years ago)

New Deicide album in September (yay!). Produced by Jason Suecof (ummm...). Cover looks like the artist showed Benton a half dozen different sketches and he said "Yeah, dude, these are awesome! Can you put 'em all together into one big image?"

grawlix (unperson), Thursday, 28 June 2018 15:15 (seven years ago)

Each quartile of that cover is basically its own cover

Simon H., Thursday, 28 June 2018 15:25 (seven years ago)

New Kevin Hufnagel is really good imo, less digital processing, more focused on melody and 80s shredder sounds (without much actual shredding): https://kevinhufnagel.bandcamp.com/album/messages-to-the-past

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Friday, 29 June 2018 14:50 (seven years ago)

Idk if it really counts as metal but wasn't sure where to put it and knew there would be fans of his metal bands here.

That new Satan track is awesome. Such a good band.

As of yesterday there's now eight Beastmaker EPs! Saw Khemmis tonight, they were much improved since last time I saw them, recommended.

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 2 July 2018 05:12 (seven years ago)

the first track on that Kevin Hufnagel album is like everything I ever liked about Joe Satriani crammed into 3 minutes.

summervillain, Tuesday, 3 July 2018 19:24 (seven years ago)

Right on.

About to see Yob and Bell Witch.

I read that in the voice of UK comedian Joe Lycett and it works really well.

Devilock, Thursday, 5 July 2018 00:02 (seven years ago)

I love the new Immortal

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Friday, 6 July 2018 22:01 (seven years ago)

There's a new Six Feet Under EP out today full of leftover tracks from the sessions for Undead and Unborn. It's...fine, if you like Six Feet Under.

grawlix (unperson), Friday, 6 July 2018 22:25 (seven years ago)

i only like the one that Cannabis Corpse played on

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Friday, 6 July 2018 22:30 (seven years ago)

Listening to the full-length debut by Trevor Church of Beastmaker's other band, Haunt, which is coming out in August on Shadow Kingdom. It's more trad metal than doom, but just as stripped-down and awesome as the Beastmaker EPs; the dude is basically Wino and Chris Black rolled into one person, plus he's the son of Montrose/Sammy Hagar bassist Bill Church, a fact which will likely interest only me.

Brett Hoffman reported dead

New Dispirit!

obnoxious pun (ultros ultros-ghali), Monday, 9 July 2018 16:40 (seven years ago)

Wow, the new Imperial Triumphant record is fantastic. Detuned black metal combined with Glenn Branca/Sonic Youth clang-storms and a seven-member horn chorale (three trumpets, three trombones and a tuba), guest vocalists galore...it's fucking awesome. Review coming on BA this week.

grawlix (unperson), Monday, 9 July 2018 17:08 (seven years ago)

RIP Brett Hoffman

New Immortal is pretty killer tbh. Saw a review that talked about it lacking the "arena rock" flourishes that Abbath would've brought but, come on, "Gates to Blashyrkh" is lighters-up anthemic.

Also this Pact album

http://moribundrecords.bandcamp.com/album/enigmata

RIYL Blizzard Beasts and Morbid Angel derived death metal with a dash of modern black metal. Very fun. I know after the Northern debacle Moribund is looking pretty bad but I like to report on the rare occasions they release something interesting.

Paul Reverse and the rediaRs (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 9 July 2018 20:02 (seven years ago)

New Pig Destroyer song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJ5HxdNlpMk

Listening to the album now. 12 tracks, 31 minutes. A few guests (Kat from Salome, Richard Johnson from Agoraphobic Nosebleed, some other folks). I continue to believe PD peaked with Terrifyer, but Metal Twitter and all the blogs will jizz in their pants over this one.
