i cant get over "I Like It" sample being super obvious, i mean that shit was in fucking burger king commercials in the 90s, i associate it w lame television ads

"Damn song of the summer"
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 18 June 2018 21:41 (seven years ago)
idk I feel like the obviousness is kind of the point
Cardi's exuberance saves it anyway
― Number None, Monday, 18 June 2018 21:45 (seven years ago)
im not saying its a bad song, just hard for me to feel any kind of totalizing excitement for when its so overfamiliar ... 22 years later & the saturation effect is still with me
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 18 June 2018 21:47 (seven years ago)
"Boo'd Up" gets me high.
― ... (Eazy), Monday, 18 June 2018 22:07 (seven years ago)
"I Do" is where I go for a Cardi bump.
― ... (Eazy), Monday, 18 June 2018 22:10 (seven years ago)
i can see the sample being a dealbreaker. i uh, like it but i love big dumb & obvious
― flopson, Monday, 18 June 2018 22:15 (seven years ago)
i'm very neutral on cardi b the musician but i do think she has a unique ability to use super obvious samples and not have it come off as cynical... there's something about the personality she's cultivated on/off record that makes it feel like, idk, someone revealing the parts of their taste that crosses over w/ the masses in a way that does not feel like pure piggybacking off the song in question? or maybe she's just good at picking super obvious samples... her remake of "chickenhead" is on the one hand very "obvious" given the current cultural moment but also i can't think of many other contemporary rappers who could do something off that record in a way that could make it feel both novel and genuine. it stands in clear contrast to all the recent re-uses of "slob on my knob" to me
also i think w/ "i like it" there's an element of there obv being an unprecedented explosion of popularity of latin music in america right now, and so there's a celebratory/victory lap element to doing that song w/ bad bunny & j balvin on it in a way that i think justifies the obviousness of it. like idk if rap rarely if ever charted and then there was all of a sudden 8 rappers who become superstars and three of them re-did "rappers delight" i might rock with it
personally im just not a huge fan of "i like it" the original which neuters my ability to enjoy the cardi b version of it but im not mad at it
― J0rdan S., Monday, 18 June 2018 23:05 (seven years ago)
I did not expect a Mustard-beat to be my song of the summer in 2018. He is actually halfway to Ten.
― Frederik B, Monday, 18 June 2018 23:09 (seven years ago)
i feel like the only person on the internet who does not think "boo'd up" is a complete revelation. like it's fine and i'm happy to see it doing well but... like, i haven't even listened to any of her other music and i'd be shocked if there weren't something better on her ep.
― dyl, Monday, 18 June 2018 23:33 (seven years ago)
^ I don’t think it’s a revelation either, just a good track. Reaction seems similar to ilms sacred cow KING
― sunburst N snowblind (Ross), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 01:00 (seven years ago)
Wait, do all of her songs end witha British monologue??
― ... (Eazy), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 04:29 (seven years ago)
i'm sad i didn't vote for boo'd up

i like Boo'd Up but was kinda disappointed to find out mustard produced it and not cardo. he should give him a production credit or a percentage for ripping his sound wholesale.
― Hall of Fam (Spottie), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 21:30 (seven years ago)
sub in 'taste' for 'i like it' make this a fair fight
― ||||||||, Thursday, 28 June 2018 06:19 (seven years ago)
def not "I Like It"
― billstevejim, Thursday, 28 June 2018 06:27 (seven years ago)

Just heard Team Familiar do a DC "grown and sexy" go-go version of "Boo'd Up." Similar vocals with a DC rhythmic bottom

You couldn’t listen to the one song you haven’t heard before voting?

wow didn’t expect such a huge gap. i guess most ilxors voted w/o hearing otw but i still expected i like it to do better. same poll on twitter was basically a 3-way tie
― flopson, Sunday, 1 July 2018 03:57 (seven years ago)
a song i like didn't do as well as i thought it would so therefore most people didn't listen to it

Lol people were literally posting in this thread that they didn’t listen to it

Here in the UK Boo'd Up has done nothing and it is astonishing to me. I keep putting it on at parties and it's a head turner - I've twice seen people who've never heard it start singing along during the first chorus - I don't understand why it hasn't transferred to this side of the ocean?
― boxedjoy, Thursday, 9 August 2018 21:30 (seven years ago)
Isn't she from London? I just assumed she's a hero there.

There was an article in the guardian about her being huge in the USA and unknown in the UK - https://www.theguardian.com/music/2018/aug/02/ella-mai-bood-up-r-and-b-charts-number-1The comments below the line are some of the worst guardian music comments of all time, and that's like being the worst strain of bubonic plague, but might be instructive about why she isn't big here, if you have a particularly high tolerance for pricks on the internet.
― mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 9 August 2018 21:47 (seven years ago)
since it doesn't appear to have been discussed anywhere else i am going to say very belatedly that the entire diana gordon ep is pretty strong!

talk • con altura • the london ?
― dyl, Sunday, 30 June 2019 15:16 (six years ago)
maybe sub "go loko" in for one of those idk
― dyl, Sunday, 30 June 2019 15:26 (six years ago)
I don’t like go loko or the London really ...
Go loko I’m pretty sure ripped off ambjaay’s uno and he’s a better rapper
― ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Sunday, 30 June 2019 15:40 (six years ago)
Swap “Aute Culture” for “Con Altura”! Much much much better track.
― Consider the coconut (morrisp), Sunday, 30 June 2019 15:45 (six years ago)
there's no big r&b jam of this summer so far, is there? at least on the level of boo'd up.
― mott the hoopleheads (voodoo chili), Sunday, 30 June 2019 15:57 (six years ago)
"talk" was the closest i could come up with but it definitely tries to straddle styles a little w/ that production
― dyl, Sunday, 30 June 2019 15:59 (six years ago)
that song is so bland that the official music video already looks like a target commercial
― mott the hoopleheads (voodoo chili), Sunday, 30 June 2019 16:01 (six years ago)
i think the production on "go loko" is arrestingly intricate considering that its concept is completely unsubtle, nearly gimmicky
― dyl, Sunday, 30 June 2019 16:02 (six years ago)
well yeah i'm not saying any of these songs are as good as the ones from last year's poll
― dyl, Sunday, 30 June 2019 16:03 (six years ago)
“Talk” does have a pretty arresting melody. Good a&r
― ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Sunday, 30 June 2019 16:56 (six years ago)
i like "talk"... it's funny to me that critics were at separate points head over heels for both khalid & disclosure and now they have a huge good pop hit together and nobody really seems to care
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 June 2019 16:57 (six years ago)
