If I manage to put together what feels like a substantial ballot to me, “Burning Up” will definitely be on it. From my limited received knowledge about Elvis, I’ve always gotten the feeling that it was one of the songs that his more rockist fans loathed.

I keep coming back to this one, a nice rocking make-over of a Bob Wills tune.

I've got my ballot down to about 133 tracks now and it's surprising how many of them are songs associated with other artists.

(xpost)

And by “Burning Up,” of course I mean “Burning Love”

re "songs associated with other artists" I was trying to think of a covers side poll that would work here but while there are songs where Elvis' version is the "definitive" one (Viva Las Vegas, Burning Love, etc) there are plenty of others not so clearly "owned" (even An American Trilogy). so I scrapped the idea.

droit au butt (Euler), Monday, 18 June 2018 17:41 (seven years ago)

As far as overlooked soundtrack tunes, I stan for “Ito Eats” from Blue Hawaii, in which Elvis closes the gap between rockabilly stutter and calypso syncopation:

Stranger In My Own Hometown, the legendary sweary one, but the youtube is full of gorgeous photos too. & once Elvis starts cussing then James Burton loosens up with very tasty licks

droit au butt (Euler), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 16:16 (seven years ago)

Never heard this before, still prefer the 'Elvis in Memphis' version but this is still smoking hot.

Tomorrow Is A Long Time belongs to Rod Stewart

Nope

Tomorrow Is A Long Time belongs to Rod Stewart...Nope

Ha! I was trying to be polite by not commenting. Elvis has the definitive version and it's not close.

Anyway friends, please dig my favorite obscure soundtrack song, the glorious Change of Habit. Please add this to the spotify playlist.

It's one of the very last ones he did, with Mary Tyler Moore.

That "Where Could I Go But to the Lord" is balm to the nerves

Here's another hot one from Elvis Country:

Here is another lock for my Top 5. This isn't obscure, but it doesn't get the recognition it deserves. It's absolutely perfect.

“Burning Love” is straight up bar rock. a Jerry Lee Lewis style rave up.

i love the apocalyptic lyrics.

It's coming closer
The flames are reaching my body
Please won't you help me
I feel like I'm slipping away
It's hard to breath
And my chest is a-heaving
Lord have mercy,
I'm burning a hole where I lay

its like a Cramps song

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 21 June 2018 16:14 (seven years ago)

OMG for the last 30 years I thought he was saying I'm burning the whole world away.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 21 June 2018 16:23 (seven years ago)

Burning Love is more like a Cars song than Cramps

cr.ht (crüt), Thursday, 21 June 2018 17:17 (seven years ago)

Too bad he never recorded Fire. Bruce wrote it for him, and it would be a perfect companion to Burning Love.

those are beautiful Moka!

Bee OK, Friday, 22 June 2018 01:01 (seven years ago)

BTW, it will be ILM Artist Poll #90. Beatles solo was #89.

Bee OK, Friday, 22 June 2018 01:02 (seven years ago)

Nice, those are some King-worthy images.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 22 June 2018 01:11 (seven years ago)

Thanks! I was just taking a guess before doing the real work... had no idea we’re at 90 now!

Damn, Moka, you rule the roll of polls

wow, Moka, looks amazing!

niels, Friday, 22 June 2018 08:38 (seven years ago)

Nice, Moka!

Five days to go, we have two ballots so far, I'm hoping we can get to 20 at least, though I know that Elvis isn't really ILM hot property.

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 22 June 2018 10:47 (seven years ago)

Will definitely vote, but his catalogue is so vast with more hidden gems than most other artists.

Dan Worsley, Friday, 22 June 2018 11:02 (seven years ago)

Any chance you can extend the deadline a week or so? It’s been done many times before.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 22 June 2018 11:29 (seven years ago)

Definitely voting. My ballot currently sits at 55 songs; I just need to shed a few and determine the final order.

grawlix (unperson), Friday, 22 June 2018 11:41 (seven years ago)

I can but my ability to do the rollout is dependent on this deadline, since I'll be traveling the first half of July. If Moka can handle the rollout, though, my steady availability during the rollout isn't so important. I can handle the compilation of ballots but if Moka can do the rollout, then an extension works for me.

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 22 June 2018 11:42 (seven years ago)

xp

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 22 June 2018 11:42 (seven years ago)

An extension would be nice as I’ve been invited from work as a guest to the world cup also at beginnings of July so I’ll be missing for a week

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 22 June 2018 17:02 (seven years ago)

Also I suggest a name change tonthe thread or a new one I just realized this is the voting thread! Maybe change it to

ARTIST POLL 90: ELVIS - Discussion and Voting Thread. (Deadline: 30/06/18)

Or something like that.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 22 June 2018 17:04 (seven years ago)

Whenever the rollout can happen, the deadline should be just before that. Moka, if you can do it the second week of July, then we can advance the deadline to the end of the first week. I can do a rollout the third week of July or the second half of next week, otherwise not until the end of August for a week, then not again until 2019. This is why I don’t volunteer to do polls...

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 22 June 2018 17:12 (seven years ago)

I’m usually free this came out of the blue. I can do the rollout second week of July. Just send me the results when you have them.

So can we change the thread title to a voting call to action?

The Fearless Thread Killers (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 30 August 2019 20:11 (six years ago)

I'm sure this was said in a meeting somewhere: "If we can find a gay African-American man who has the Billy Ray Cyrus sound and the Billy Ray Cyrus feel, we can get a billion hits on YouTube."

clemenza, Friday, 30 August 2019 20:20 (six years ago)

Rock and Roll music, if you like it, if you feel it, you can’t help but POLL it.
