"boo'd up" is so sumptuous and layered, it cuts a pretty remarkable figure whenever it comes on the radio, especially when surrounded by other soundcloud-propelled urban radio hits

"otw" is great, just not quite as sonically immersive or charming as "boo'd up." "i like it" is lively and entertaining and cardi's verse is great, but the i'm a little turned off by the generic latin pop backing track.

Boo’d up just chills me right out and like it fires me up. Depends on the moment, already voted like it but boo’d up made cleaning up so much more lovely today.

― flopson, Monday, 18 June 2018 22:15 (six years ago) link
i'm very neutral on cardi b the musician but i do think she has a unique ability to use super obvious samples and not have it come off as cynical... there's something about the personality she's cultivated on/off record that makes it feel like, idk, someone revealing the parts of their taste that crosses over w/ the masses in a way that does not feel like pure piggybacking off the song in question? or maybe she's just good at picking super obvious samples... her remake of "chickenhead" is on the one hand very "obvious" given the current cultural moment but also i can't think of many other contemporary rappers who could do something off that record in a way that could make it feel both novel and genuine. it stands in clear contrast to all the recent re-uses of "slob on my knob" to me
also i think w/ "i like it" there's an element of there obv being an unprecedented explosion of popularity of latin music in america right now, and so there's a celebratory/victory lap element to doing that song w/ bad bunny & j balvin on it in a way that i think justifies the obviousness of it. like idk if rap rarely if ever charted and then there was all of a sudden 8 rappers who become superstars and three of them re-did "rappers delight" i might rock with it
personally im just not a huge fan of "i like it" the original which neuters my ability to enjoy the cardi b version of it but im not mad at it

Here in the UK Boo'd Up has done nothing and it is astonishing to me. I keep putting it on at parties and it's a head turner - I've twice seen people who've never heard it start singing along during the first chorus - I don't understand why it hasn't transferred to this side of the ocean?

There was an article in the guardian about her being huge in the USA and unknown in the UK - https://www.theguardian.com/music/2018/aug/02/ella-mai-bood-up-r-and-b-charts-number-1The comments below the line are some of the worst guardian music comments of all time, and that's like being the worst strain of bubonic plague, but might be instructive about why she isn't big here, if you have a particularly high tolerance for pricks on the internet.

I like Boo’d Up. It’s weird though. She’s had a fair amount of similarish sounding cuts that generated little buzz. Like somebody at the label suddenly went, ok that’s enough bubble, next mustard track with some bounce and a hard snare will be the hit, you can now come out as British and not Floetry notsureiftheyrefakingit British.

Listening to "OTW" for the first time as the result of this thread, and, gosh, that is a sumptuous 4 minutes of music. The beat is, like, holographic, the way that old Jam & Lewis productions used to sound compared to their contemporaries. Like you know how they had an improbably long career where they just kept successfully updating their sound to the times for several decades? This is what I imagine they'd be up to if that streak were still going.A travesty that this never made it to top40 radio, especially when Khalid is such a hot property right now (apparently) off the back of comparatively beige material like "Eastside" and "Love Lies". Maybe the guests/producers on those were just higher priorities for the labels to get over than 6lack and Nineteen85, idk
― You're all losing so many points on your progress bars (Champiness), Saturday, 13 October 2018 22:14 (five years ago) link
it is truly an incredible production
i heard it on the radio for the 3rd time, like, ever this past week -- sounded incredible there and still a bit astonished it never completely took off. i guess his team was more focused on pushing the song with normani or something.

boo'd up was actually cut by several difft artists but never released before ella mai picked it up--some people apparently seemed confident it was a hit. it does sound strangely out of time though, like something that could have been equally huge eight years ago
