I love that Kathi McDonald "Insane Asylum" record upthread. The title track is the Koko Taylor classic redone by as a duet with Sly Stone. Lots of great session credits: John Cipollina, Ronnie Montrose, Papa John Creach, Pointer Sisters...
I saw her touring with Long John Baldry a bunch in the 80s/90s.

it's crazy (sic) how the Rhino Handmade thing of the Crazy Horse stuff sold out immediately .. bummer. they gotta repress that shit

Picked up a bunch of non-indie underground punk and rock thread fodder in Seattle:Worlds Lousy vol 8TyvekThe Rats "intermittent Signals"Factums "The Sistrum"that same Eddy Current Suppression Ring single 69 mentioned above.Pink Reason "Borrowed Time" 7"also got King Sunny Ade's AURA for five bucks. Three tracks a side, 1984, seemed like it would be worth it. I love "Juju Music" and "Synchro Sound" and every other early 80's King Sunny I've heard, come to think of it.
― Trip Maker, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 17:53 (seventeen years ago)
Love that Factums record.
― ian, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 17:54 (seventeen years ago)
There was an Illes record (the Hungarian prog band) record on the wall at this one store, priced at ninety bones. It was in this minimal sleeve, just the name of the band stamped on the front and few notes on the back that looked scrawled by hand. "Dedicated to Angela Davis." Really wanted to hear it but not prepared to drop that kind of cash on a record, even if I'll probably never see it anywhere else.
― Trip Maker, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:00 (seventeen years ago)
wow I never knew those African Head Charge LPs were repressed.
the other day I found the Slits untitled early sessions LP on Y records for 4 bucks, been looking for that since the late 80's. also got Martin Rev's 1st (?) solo LP on Lust/Unlust which is great.
― sleeve, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:28 (seventeen years ago)
african head charge -- my life in a hole in the ground (91 repress on on-u sound)african head charge -- off the beaten track (92 repress on on-u sound)
on closer inspection, i realize that i actually got the off the beaten track sleeve, but the environmental studies LP. bummer, cause i cant imagine ill find the other parts, cause the storeowner said no one had gotten in touch on the other end. agggh, records plague number two of the week!

― scott seward, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:07 (seventeen years ago)
massachusetts is serious bill staines territory. his records are everywhere. some of his early records are supposedly worth money, but i don't think anyone actually buys them. i'm not a huge fan either.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:09 (seventeen years ago)
Dang. I may have never seen an LP on Specialty, or ECM, in all my years of thrifting! I just keep coming up with those "Firestone Presents The Great Sounds Of Christmas" comps on Columbia.
― Such A Hilbily (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:13 (seventeen years ago)
no ecm, really? i thought they were common everywhere. or at least the friggin' koln concert and shit like that.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:15 (seventeen years ago)
I actually own Koln Concerts! Think I swiped it from a radio station, though. Yeah, my local thrifts are huge on MOR dreck, I very rarely find obscure stuff.
― Such A Hilbily (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:28 (seventeen years ago)
Thrift shops in MA seem to pwn those in NY.
Also, re: Bill Staines-- I really like his record with Guy Van Duser! And Guy Van Duser's solo LP "Stride Guitar" as well.
― ian, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 20:06 (seventeen years ago)
also, fave Norman Blake is "Fields of November"
what do folks know of that BIG LEGAL MESS label? they have some memphis gospel comp that looks interesting.
the junior kimbrough "early recordings" 10" would be a must-buy except that it seems very overpriced for an EP.
― amateurist, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 20:12 (seventeen years ago)
dude scott where do you live? if i could find a haul like that in a midwest thrift store ... well i wouldn't would i?
a lot of early flying fish stuff is just terrific rootsy singer/songwriter stuff. most of which has never been reissued i don't think.
― amateurist, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 20:13 (seventeen years ago)
wait scott-- you run a record store?
― amateurist, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 20:14 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, i just opened one in greenfield. i have to advertise and do the flier thing and all that. and, um, get a sign for the front of the store. cuz hardly anyone knows i'm here yet. i gotta spam amherst and northampton too with propaganda. all the vinyl dudes will know soon enough.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 20:24 (seventeen years ago)
so you're in western mass?
― amateurist, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 20:28 (seventeen years ago)
i decided to go with the "soft" opening. cuz i still got chubb rock tapes to price and stuff. it's a small store, but it looks nice. i like it.
i bought 3500+ rap singles + other stuff on craigslist and i'm still wading thru all that. that was a good deal! lots of good stuff for 500 bucks. craigslist is cool. i make a phone call and three hours later a dude and his girlfriend kiki are unloading a panel truck full of records into my store.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 20:30 (seventeen years ago)
