as a bonus, now you can store all your folded up shirts and pants in your suddenly wide open record shelves

Also I'm pretty sure those balloons have the logo of Mind, the mental health charity on them. So possibly actually a charity shop. I mean, I still think it's a terrible terrible idea, but...

this store has trouble with math
"i want 7 records."
"that'll be $56. but if you let us give you a dollar, we'll let you take 4 more records on the house."
"uh--"
"don't ask questions, pal."

The fact that they are featuring ubiquitous dollar bin world champions Chuck Mangione and Joan Baez records in the window, and the fact that this store is in NYC, makes me think this is maybe some kind of elaborate art prank.

Their website has a link for "records we have" which actually takes you to a Discogs page which shows just about all of those records selling for way less than $10 a piece elsewhere.

years ago i recorded a band and we did the tracking on computer and at the end ran it through someone's reel to reel for a mastering pass to get the tape compression and sort of pre-master the song. its kind of a common technique.

― scopin' VARs (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 12 July 2018 16:02 (seven years ago)
CD-quality seems scammy, though. Can't imagine people only or mostly do it as a final step. I guess it depends on pricing. Maybe it's fairly cheap and intended for home recordists. I'm sure Jack White has his own steam powered tape machine to use.

But thanks to the economy of scale isn't vinyl much more expensive to produce?
― canary christ (stevie), Sunday, 16 September 2018 16:40 (seven years ago)
Than it used to be. I mean, obvs labels and stores are also trying to make £££s off the only music people actually pay for anymore.
It is, but small labels still manage to sell LPs for under £10 on much smaller pressings than Paul Mcfuckingcartney, so this is still a massive rip off

I had dinner at Cracker Barrel last night, and in the shop they have a line of "exclusive" picture discs, including the Walk The Line soundtrack.
― Ubering With The King (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 17 September 2018 01:33 (seven years ago)
Holy shit, I'm standing in a Movie Exchange (what CD Warehouse turned into) which carries used vinyl now. The one closer to me has a totally random selection stuff all priced at $3.99 a title, but this "Flagship" location has a bunch of popular titles at the hugest gouging prices I've ever seen.
For example, not one but two used 2003 reissues of Dark Side of The Moon for $69 apiece.
And as a further obscenity, a vintage copy of Songs In The Key Of Life with both records and the EP but no book and there's a full split bottom seam on the back cover could be yours for a cool $100!
I'm about to barf.
