So we're calling releases leaks now?

Johnny Fever, Friday, 8 June 2018 05:00 (seven years ago)

Nothing new.
And it's out today officially regardless

nostormo, Friday, 8 June 2018 05:01 (seven years ago)

opening for Interpol at Madison Square Garden in February

flappy bird, Friday, 8 June 2018 05:22 (seven years ago)

poor woman is 18 (19?) and already has msg boarders saying "not bad but she'll never make another song as good as this other one". cool world.

alpine static, Friday, 8 June 2018 06:10 (seven years ago)

You are right.
She is a genius and everything she does (and will do) is perfect.
No other opinion is allowed because we don't wanna hurt that innocent soul who chose to be in the public eye.

nostormo, Friday, 8 June 2018 06:22 (seven years ago)

yes, that's exactly what I said

alpine static, Friday, 8 June 2018 07:15 (seven years ago)

i mean, i'm sorry if you took that as a personal insult, nostormo, but the truth is i accurately represented what you said.

and i think it's a bummer to declare that she has already written and recorded her best song at age 18 based off a track or two from her new album...

if that's who you wanna be, tho, go for it.

alpine static, Friday, 8 June 2018 07:22 (seven years ago)

So good and unpretentious.
The hooks,the melody,the guitars. Perfect.

nostormo, Friday, 8 June 2018 08:28 (seven years ago)

Oops wrong thread

nostormo, Friday, 8 June 2018 08:29 (seven years ago)

Snail mail rules

Slippage (Ross), Friday, 8 June 2018 12:34 (seven years ago)

Albums great. Needless reworking is past material though. Perhaps it’s for those who missed the ep

Slippage (Ross), Friday, 8 June 2018 13:59 (seven years ago)

Nostormo extremely off the money

Slippage (Ross), Saturday, 9 June 2018 17:20 (seven years ago)

So cavalier man

Slippage (Ross), Saturday, 9 June 2018 17:22 (seven years ago)

I heard her for the first time last night. She has just saved indierock, hasn't she?

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Saturday, 9 June 2018 17:25 (seven years ago)

She’s the best.

Slippage (Ross), Saturday, 9 June 2018 17:27 (seven years ago)

I find it laughable that someone can say this is nothing special. Show me your work man.

Slippage (Ross), Saturday, 9 June 2018 17:29 (seven years ago)

Apologies for my former posts. Rough week.
This record is good and straight up indie rock which feels refreshing to me tho I wish she would rip a little more. When she does it’s great. Very melancholy record

Slippage (Ross), Monday, 11 June 2018 04:48 (seven years ago)

I think this album is a good example of its kind of indie-rock -- but it's perhaps not ideal for listeners seeking strong/distinctive melodies, guitar lines, etc.

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Monday, 11 June 2018 18:34 (seven years ago)

She’s a fantastic player but yeah the Barnett record is a little more hot lava, but anyways snail mail is an artist who has a bright future

Slippage (Ross), Monday, 11 June 2018 19:34 (seven years ago)

perhaps not ideal for listeners seeking strong/distinctive melodies, guitar lines, etc.

yeah idgi at all and i guess this post explains why

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Monday, 11 June 2018 19:40 (seven years ago)

Dunno I really dug the cranberries vibe of her ep and this is more of the same.

Slippage (Ross), Monday, 11 June 2018 19:54 (seven years ago)

would that i heard the cranberries in this

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Monday, 11 June 2018 19:55 (seven years ago)

Mostly heard it in thinning from the ep

I get why people aren’t crazy about this but I’ve started really liking her vocal phrasing, mostly her voice is like a slacker Dinosaur Jr vibe and somewhat sad but idk

Slippage (Ross), Monday, 11 June 2018 19:57 (seven years ago)

i Feel best coast is a fair comparison for a straight up indie record

Slippage (Ross), Monday, 11 June 2018 19:58 (seven years ago)

I like the album but the praise is a bit much.

Simon H., Monday, 11 June 2018 19:58 (seven years ago)

mostly her voice is like a slacker Dinosaur Jr vibe

On this tip -- have you heard Jessica Lea Mayfield?

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Monday, 11 June 2018 20:18 (seven years ago)

Me too

flappy bird, Monday, 11 June 2018 20:34 (seven years ago)

That’s why I love Girlpool but can’t get into this at all (though “Let’s Find an Out” is a great song)

flappy bird, Monday, 11 June 2018 20:35 (seven years ago)

not whelmed by this. i expect more from 18 year olds

flopson, Monday, 11 June 2018 22:56 (seven years ago)

Morris I haven’t but where to start ?

Flopson I hope you’re joking

Slippage (Ross), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 00:38 (seven years ago)

18 years is surely enough time to figure out how to write a halfway decent indie rock album, Ross

flopson, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 00:47 (seven years ago)

That’s probably true!

I’ve been making music since 14 and I never half assed it

Eh maybe I’m just getting old and like everything now

Slippage (Ross), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 00:48 (seven years ago)

Eh maybe I just want to like this more than I do.

I love pristine and some other tracks but I find myself switching the album to something less monochromatic

Slippage (Ross), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 00:49 (seven years ago)

xp
Ross – just start playing Mayfield’s latest LP; she sings like Mascis Jr.!

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 01:01 (seven years ago)

Will do. Morris you’re a cool poster

Slippage (Ross), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 01:09 (seven years ago)

Thx, likewise!

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 01:48 (seven years ago)

initial reaction to the album was negative but it has grown on me a lot. not a great album, but some keepers on these for sure. particularly like Speaking Terms and Full Control.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 22 June 2018 15:46 (seven years ago)

I love pristine

mind how you go (Ross), Friday, 22 June 2018 16:48 (seven years ago)

three months pass...

This thread is baffling to me, Lush is definitely up there for me on 2018 records. The Cranberries aren't quite what i'm feeling, but i love the referential matrix that Ryan Dombal made in his pfork review, although some might think it's a bit overwrought.

There are echoes of early Liz Phair in Lush’s stark guitars and its tightrope walk between despair and enlightenment, but there are also flashes of the Replacements’ Paul Westerberg at his most wrung-out, and Paramore’s Hayley Williams crinkled emo soulfulness, and Fiona Apple’s ferocity, and Taylor Swift’s savvy heartache, and the solemn quietude of Frank Ocean’s Blonde.

Not sure about Fiona Apple and Frank Ocean, but the rest? Definitely.

austinb, Thursday, 11 October 2018 07:55 (seven years ago)

def don’t hear hayley williams here at all

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 11 October 2018 10:56 (seven years ago)

I have not heard this album yet but I will now take a listen for the hope of a flash of Paul Westerberg,

Ctrl+Alt+Del in Poughkeepsie (fionnland), Thursday, 11 October 2018 11:01 (seven years ago)

let us know if you find it

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 11 October 2018 14:32 (seven years ago)

Her voice which I like a lot reminds me of someone else. An indie lady from the 90s, I don't think it is Juliana Hatfield. Pristine is indeed very nice. And the 3rd song "Speaking Terms" is such a pure, vulnerable beauty.

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Thursday, 11 October 2018 17:53 (seven years ago)

Didn't find it (if there's any reference I would add it's that 'Stick' reminded me slightly of Mark Kozelek ha)

but Christ, Habit is a bloody wonderful EP, esp. given she was 17.

You (bleeping) need me. You can't Finn without me (fionnland), Thursday, 11 October 2018 22:47 (seven years ago)

and hearing Kozelek on 'Let's Find an Out' and 'Full Control' too but maybe I'm just looking for it artificially now

You (bleeping) need me. You can't Finn without me (fionnland), Thursday, 11 October 2018 22:49 (seven years ago)

I'm revisiting Lush, and digging it a lot more than I did on previous tries. Not sure what's changed -- maybe I'm just in the right mood? -- but it's hitting the right notes this morning.

a neon light ablaze in this green smoky haze (morrisp), Monday, 22 October 2018 18:40 (seven years ago)

new cover "The 2nd Most Beautiful Girl in the World" (originally by Courtney Love - the band not the person): https://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/the-2nd-most-beautiful-girl-in-the-world/

flappy bird, Monday, 22 October 2018 18:42 (seven years ago)

At her best, there's something about the slightly flat(?) tone of the music colliding with the slightly more flat(??) tone of her voice, in those big swells of volume, to winning effect.

a neon light ablaze in this green smoky haze (morrisp), Monday, 22 October 2018 18:52 (seven years ago)
