Saw Earthless for the first time last Saturday. Those guys pretty much take off to the rings of Saturn right at the start and pretty much just go for the gusto in their set. Mario is an awesome drummer. The vocals work fine to me. Probably the best show I have seen since seeing Crowbar at this tiny all ages show in Danville, Kentucky a couple years ago.

I would probably give a few hours of my life to see Mesarthim tour with Astronoid.Well, Astronoid is opening for Zeal & Ardor which is still kinds cool! What isn't kinda cool is they play Philly the same night as MWOBHM stalwarts Cloven Hoof. :(

I have to say I really like the new Zeal & Ardor songs, way better than the debut imho
― Simon H., Wednesday, 6 June 2018 17:23 (eight years ago)
v uncomfortable with the title of the zeal & ardor record given the history of the project
― flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Wednesday, 6 June 2018 17:26 (eight years ago)
extremely fair
― Simon H., Wednesday, 6 June 2018 17:28 (eight years ago)
what is the history of the project
― alpine static, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 17:42 (eight years ago)
also, i agree w/ NYC, i wish Astronoid would either headline again or go out with a band i actually like. a Mesarthim / Astronoid tour would be amazing. (not that Mesarthim plays live, that i know of?)
Astronoid should sell a limb to go on a long tour w/ Deafheaven, they'd pick up some new fans fo sho
― alpine static, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 17:45 (eight years ago)
I mean it's a Swiss-American guy making records inspired by the concept of "what if slaves turned to Satan instead of Jesus in their spirituals" so xp
― Simon H., Wednesday, 6 June 2018 17:46 (eight years ago)
feel very lucky to have caught Astronoid with Moon Tooth last year
― Simon H., Wednesday, 6 June 2018 17:47 (eight years ago)
i didn't know any of that stuff, thanks xp
― alpine static, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 18:26 (eight years ago)
this Yahar'gul is fantastic -- esp if you like the less grimy/stifling and more icily bucolic side of Blut Aus Nord. Lots of shimmery guitars.
Thank you!

I wish there were a black metal review blog called "Is This Artist A Piece Of Shit?" and all their reviews were simply "Yes." or "No."— Chris (@ATrveKvltDad) June 5, 2018

Anybody checked out the new one from Breathing Light? One of those bands that is not really metal, yet too metal for the truly metal-averse
they describe themselves as "romantic punk hardcore gothic rock" presumably with tongue a bit in cheek.

Sharapova vs. Muguruza gruntfest at the French Open needs some DSBM music underneath it

TOMB MOLD
― flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Thursday, 7 June 2018 14:30 (eight years ago)
oh within the first five seconds i am ABOUT this
yeah it fucking rules, I was into the raw production on the early tapes etc. but they just sound awesome here and lose none of their appeal
― Simon H., Thursday, 7 June 2018 14:36 (eight years ago)
this record is disgusting, i love it
― flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Thursday, 7 June 2018 14:37 (eight years ago)
I just got my physical copy and can't wait for work to be over so I can infect my ears

Unreleased Judas Iscariot... released!

Only recommended if you like savagery

Mid-period Judas Iscariot is very underrated, this guy always had great riffs.
― Siegbran, Friday, 8 June 2018 08:31 (eight years ago)
So obviously there's a lot to feel weird about or outright oppose around Zeal and Ardor as "a thing" but what I like most about the new album is that it explores a melodic or sonic idea or two per track, then gets out within about three minutes (or considerably less!) and moves on. Waaaay more bands (non-grindcore division) should pace their records like that.
― Simon H., Friday, 8 June 2018 14:01 (eight years ago)
Tomb Mold is fun, but another Canadian death metal release from last week is Kataklysm's Meditations. A friend and I went to their show on a whim on Monday and they gave out a free copy of the CD. Newish drummer Olivier Beaudoin had an expansive kit worthy of Neil Peart, and it seemed like he used it all -- no drum or cymbal went unwhacked. A passionate audience, lots of camaraderie, great show.
― Fastnbulbous, Friday, 8 June 2018 23:13 (eight years ago)
Kataklysm is so underrated, they've been making great music for like 20 years

Orange Goblin record sounds like old Kiss if the boogie was more convincing.Except for "Suicide Division" which sounds like Venom.

For all the people who have been loving The Armed album, I just saw them play last night and it was easily the most fun I’ve had at a show in a long time. Sounded great, fun performance art stuff happening throughout, everything about it was incredibly positive and great. Love their sense of humor and love their band..

if they come to the uk we'll be at the front

pow, new Funeral Mist in less than a week

No previews yet but I'm sure it'll be an unholy stormer.
― Devilock, Monday, 11 June 2018 05:57 (eight years ago)
Good news, I love that band. Haven't paid much attention to new releases, I saw there's new Amorphis, Urfaust, Thy Catafalque and Drudkh records, any good?
― Siegbran, Monday, 11 June 2018 07:28 (eight years ago)
Urfaust is wonderful, perhaps even their best (as long as you like their recent doom-ier sound)
― obnoxious pun (ultros ultros-ghali), Monday, 11 June 2018 10:00 (eight years ago)
new Voivod in Sept!!!
― Simon H., Monday, 11 June 2018 15:03 (eight years ago)
Yob's Our Raw Heart is fantastic. In context, the title track is more powerful than it was alone, which I would have found hard to believe.
― Three Word Username, Monday, 11 June 2018 15:27 (eight years ago)
New Progenie Terrestre Pura EP is really good. They've clearly been listening to Dodheimsgard :)
― imago, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 10:47 (seven years ago)
New Funeral Mist > new Marduk. But you knew that.
― grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 18:11 (seven years ago)
I know I can get entirely too hung up on this stuff, but "Progenie Terrestre Pura" is something like pure terrestrial children, which, uh, sets off alarm bells. So, is this like super racist sci-fi, only the pure left in the future?
I tried translating some of the lyrics, and I'm confident of the sci-fi part.
― summervillain, Thursday, 14 June 2018 13:08 (seven years ago)
pretty certain they're not racist
― imago, Thursday, 14 June 2018 13:09 (seven years ago)
all their lyrics are about robots and shit idk
Can't blame anyone for being jumpy but I'm pretty sure PTP are OK.
― obnoxious pun (ultros ultros-ghali), Thursday, 14 June 2018 13:17 (seven years ago)
thanks for the thoughtful responses

Wow, the new Zeal & Ardor is good.
― Frederik B, Saturday, 16 June 2018 12:36 (seven years ago)
It is undeniably ear-catching. I'm choosing to jettison the conceptual framework and embrace it as just a gospel-flecked rock record.
― Simon H., Saturday, 16 June 2018 13:04 (seven years ago)
Grayson Currin's review in Pfork today offered a potentially viable defense of the concept, mind
― Simon H., Saturday, 16 June 2018 13:29 (seven years ago)
Kinda, but I read the link where he supposedly 'smartly answered' criticisms, and I'm not sure I buy it. Whether or not an artist explains a concept to my satisfaction doesn't necessarily determine if I find the concept satisfying, though.
― Frederik B, Saturday, 16 June 2018 13:36 (seven years ago)
Yeah, I'm choosing just to enjoy it as a hook-dense rock album.
