Rolling Metal 2018

Saw Earthless for the first time last Saturday. Those guys pretty much take off to the rings of Saturn right at the start and pretty much just go for the gusto in their set. Mario is an awesome drummer. The vocals work fine to me. Probably the best show I have seen since seeing Crowbar at this tiny all ages show in Danville, Kentucky a couple years ago.

I would probably give a few hours of my life to see Mesarthim tour with Astronoid.
Well, Astronoid is opening for Zeal & Ardor which is still kinds cool!
What isn't kinda cool is they play Philly the same night as MWOBHM stalwarts Cloven Hoof. :(

I have to say I really like the new Zeal & Ardor songs, way better than the debut imho

also, i agree w/ NYC, i wish Astronoid would either headline again or go out with a band i actually like. a Mesarthim / Astronoid tour would be amazing. (not that Mesarthim plays live, that i know of?)

Astronoid should sell a limb to go on a long tour w/ Deafheaven, they'd pick up some new fans fo sho

this Yahar'gul is fantastic -- esp if you like the less grimy/stifling and more icily bucolic side of Blut Aus Nord. Lots of shimmery guitars.

Mid-period Judas Iscariot is very underrated, this guy always had great riffs.

So obviously there's a lot to feel weird about or outright oppose around Zeal and Ardor as "a thing" but what I like most about the new album is that it explores a melodic or sonic idea or two per track, then gets out within about three minutes (or considerably less!) and moves on. Waaaay more bands (non-grindcore division) should pace their records like that.

Tomb Mold is fun, but another Canadian death metal release from last week is Kataklysm's Meditations. A friend and I went to their show on a whim on Monday and they gave out a free copy of the CD. Newish drummer Olivier Beaudoin had an expansive kit worthy of Neil Peart, and it seemed like he used it all -- no drum or cymbal went unwhacked. A passionate audience, lots of camaraderie, great show.

Kataklysm is so underrated, they've been making great music for like 20 years

Orange Goblin record sounds like old Kiss if the boogie was more convincing.
Except for "Suicide Division" which sounds like Venom.

For all the people who have been loving The Armed album, I just saw them play last night and it was easily the most fun I’ve had at a show in a long time. Sounded great, fun performance art stuff happening throughout, everything about it was incredibly positive and great. Love their sense of humor and love their band..

Urfaust is wonderful, perhaps even their best (as long as you like their recent doom-ier sound)

Yob's Our Raw Heart is fantastic. In context, the title track is more powerful than it was alone, which I would have found hard to believe.

New Progenie Terrestre Pura EP is really good. They've clearly been listening to Dodheimsgard :)

I know I can get entirely too hung up on this stuff, but "Progenie Terrestre Pura" is something like pure terrestrial children, which, uh, sets off alarm bells.
So, is this like super racist sci-fi, only the pure left in the future?

I tried translating some of the lyrics, and I'm confident of the sci-fi part.

It is undeniably ear-catching. I'm choosing to jettison the conceptual framework and embrace it as just a gospel-flecked rock record.

Kinda, but I read the link where he supposedly 'smartly answered' criticisms, and I'm not sure I buy it. Whether or not an artist explains a concept to my satisfaction doesn't necessarily determine if I find the concept satisfying, though.

Yeah, I'm choosing just to enjoy it as a hook-dense rock album.
