felt slightly weird about voting for Junk, sublime as it is, since is it reaaally a post Beatle track? the Anthology/White Album outtake is more or less the same as what Paul put out solo

niels, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:05 (eight years ago)

xps appreciate it. only in a more just world would monkberry moon delight take its rightful place in the top five

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:06 (eight years ago)

and 'Press'!

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:08 (eight years ago)

thanks for runnning a great poll Shakey, rather appreciated all the twists too, kinda like an M. Night Shyamalan poll

niels, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:09 (eight years ago)

in the end I put #9 dream in the #1 slot, perfect sonics, sounds like a dream, feels very contemporary to me, and it's by far the song in this poll I've listened to the most for the past few years

My Mummy's Dead is the highest track on my ballot to not place, closely followed by quite a few great Paul compositions of which some (Great Day) I realize are my idiosyncrasies but others (Bluebird, dammit!) are complete ilm oversights...

here's my full ballot for timellison to peruse:

John Lennon - #9 Dream
Paul McCartney - Band On The Run
John Lennon - Oh Yoko
John Lennon - Watching The Wheels
Paul McCartney - Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey
John Lennon - Woman
John Lennon - Jealous Guy
Paul McCartney - Junk
Paul McCartney - Maybe I’m Amazed
John Lennon - Love
George Harrison - My Sweet Lord
John Lennon - Hold On
John Lennon - Mother
John Lennon - Beautiful Boy
John Lennon - Imagine
Paul McCartney - Jet
John Lennon - Mind Games
John Lennon - My Mummy’s Dead
John Lennon - Well Well Well
Paul McCartney - Great Day
Paul McCartney - Heart Of The Country
Paul McCartney - Bluebird
Paul McCartney - Oo You
Paul McCartney - Calico Skies
Paul McCartney - Heaven On A Sunday
Paul McCartney - Long Haired Lady
John Lennon - One Day At A Time
John Lennon - Old Dirt Road
Paul McCartney - The Song We Were Singing
John Lennon - Nobody Told Me
George Harrison - Here Comes The Moon
Paul McCartney - Distractions
John Lennon - Whatever Gets You Through The Night
George Harrison - Simply Shady
Paul McCartney - Arrow Through Me
Paul McCartney - Your Way
George Harrison - I'd Have You Anytime
George Harrison - Don’t Let Me Wait Too Long
Paul McCartney - Another Day
John Lennon - How Do You Sleep
George Harrison - Love Comes To Everyone
George Harrison - Wah-wah
Paul McCartney - Every Night
Paul McCartney - Say Say Say
George Harrison - Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)
George Harrison - Stuch Inside a Cloud
George Harrison - If Not For You
John Lennon - Remember Love
George Harrison - What Is Life
Ringo Starr - Early 1970
Ringo Starr - Occopella
Ringo Starr - No No Song

niels, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:12 (eight years ago)

love Instant Karma. one of the earliest memories i have is waking up early to go to the airport and i remember this song being on the radio and it having that "late evening/early morning" feel to it.

kind of pleased it landed at the top. they wrote and recorded it as fast as possible, part of that improvisational "Capturing the moment" aesthetic that John/Yoko played with so much. it's all about capturing lightning in a bottle, as pure as possible.

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:13 (eight years ago)

Dang I forgot to vote for Spies Like Us, I love that song

You could say the same about Jealous Guy/Child of Nature (yes, completely different lyrics, but the Anthology demo of Junk doesn't have finished lyrics either, and there are small differences in the music). And obviously all the George songs that ended up on ATMP and even Circles, which was demoed in 1968.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:23 (eight years ago)

Thanks for a terrific poll and entertaining rollout, Shakey.

WilliamC, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:25 (eight years ago)

how'd you like that "here's the ACTUAL results" fakeout

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:30 (eight years ago)

truly original

niels, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:31 (eight years ago)

yes thanks for doing this! i also did not vote (sorry!) but i enjoy the discussion.

i know the Beatles are old and have been talked about a zillion times but they have a crazy prolific body of work and there is always something new to discover. ive been a Beatles maniac since i was 15-16, collecting all the bootlegs, reading the Lewisohn books with glee, etc. and there is still much i have yet to hear.

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:33 (eight years ago)

Thanks so much for doing this, Shakey. Truly one of the most fun and entertaining polls/rollouts in some time.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:40 (eight years ago)

yeah thanks for doing this shakey -- it was a lot of fun listening to a bunch of this stuff over the last few weeks.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:43 (eight years ago)

Every track from "Electronic Sound" got voted

Mark G, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:44 (eight years ago)

Sad that no one else voted for Blindman

Mark G, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:44 (eight years ago)

131. We Love You - The Rolling Stones (feat. John, Paul) (267 points, 5 votes)

Haha, I was wondering how many would vote for this (it made my ballot).

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:47 (eight years ago)

the bootlegs of that are a lot of fun. Brian Jones on mellotron. the Stones sound like Suicide or something!

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:48 (eight years ago)

Nicky Hopkins is the fuckin man

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:49 (eight years ago)

great results (all versions), great poll, bravo shakey. sorry i was at work and then at the movies and thus missed almost all of it but this is a really solid lineup of beatle tracks. good turnout, too!

noel gallaghah's high flying burbbhrbhbbhbburbbb (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:53 (eight years ago)

yeah 34 ballots in the end, forgot to mention that

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:54 (eight years ago)

maybe the highest turnout for a poll I've run, I'm not sure

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 22:54 (eight years ago)

sad that "So Sad" & "Simply Shady" from George didn't make it

missed the deadline to vote but have thoroughly enjoyed this poll & accompanying spotify. good show fellas.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 23:16 (eight years ago)

Brad, would you add #4 and 5, Maybe I'm Amazed and Jealous Guy, to the revised Spotify list?

WilliamC, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 23:19 (eight years ago)

no

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 23:21 (eight years ago)

jk sorry i forgot

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 23:21 (eight years ago)

great poll, shakey! was awesome discovering things and re-discovering stuff i hadn't listened to in a long time.

paul mccartney & whinge (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 6 June 2018 00:57 (eight years ago)

- all the Nilsson tracks (was bummed none of those made it into the top 100 tbh)

really surprised by this! Can’t complain cause I didn’t vote but if I had “Mucho Mungo/Mt. Elga” would’ve been my #1

sciatica, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 01:06 (eight years ago)

would it be terrible for the casual fan to ask for album totals for further investigation?

campreverb, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 01:26 (eight years ago)

That’s tricky because no one included the albums tracks were from with their ballots (and I didnt ask for this info). So tabulating that would require some work.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 01:39 (eight years ago)

The obvious albums got the most votes - Lennon’s POB, All Things Must Pass, Ram, Band on the Run, Imagine

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 01:50 (eight years ago)

Thanks, enjoyed the rollout.

campreverb, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 02:16 (eight years ago)

felt slightly weird about voting for Junk, sublime as it is, since is it reaaally a post Beatle track? the Anthology/White Album outtake is more or less the same as what Paul put out solo

I always preferred “Singalong Junk” TBH...

Thanks for another great poll, Shakey!

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 03:59 (eight years ago)

Yeah thanks for running this Shakey, lots of fun to vote in, I discovered/re-discovered some great songs from all four Beatles (and Yoko!) putting my ballot together.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 09:34 (eight years ago)

aaaaaand here's my ballot.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 6 June 2018 10:16 (eight years ago)

lol I was the only voter for "Scumbag"
you are all missing out

droit au butt (Euler), Wednesday, 6 June 2018 11:36 (eight years ago)

kinda bummed none of the yoko double fantasy songs placed

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Wednesday, 6 June 2018 14:26 (eight years ago)

for the most part they're much better than john's except maybe "watching the wheels"

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Wednesday, 6 June 2018 14:27 (eight years ago)

the production also suits her better than him

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Wednesday, 6 June 2018 14:27 (eight years ago)

otm

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 6 June 2018 14:34 (eight years ago)

so much so that I can't hear what Phil Spector brought to Season of Glass.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 6 June 2018 14:34 (eight years ago)

yeah I've never understood what that credit was about. Assumed he was involved with some early tracking or something.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 15:15 (eight years ago)

kinda bummed none of the yoko double fantasy songs placed

"Kiss Kiss Kiss" the highest at 118. There was a relatively solid Yoko-voting contingent of about a dozen but there was a lot of vote-splitting.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 15:16 (eight years ago)

lol yeah, it was great looking at alfred's ballot and seeing he voted for a bunch of approximately infinite universe tracks but they were all tracks that fell off the end of my ballot

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Wednesday, 6 June 2018 15:21 (eight years ago)

Al’s list helped me figure out where to start and how deep to dig. I ended up creating three tiers of stuff and organizing it mostly that way. Even still, my top twenty was pretty conservative:

60. Listen to the What the Man Said

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 15:43 (eight years ago)

I didn't know this about Walking on Thin Ice:

Lennon's lead guitar work on the track, which he recorded on 4 December 1980, was his final creative act.[2] He used his famous Beatles era 1958 Rickenbacker 325 to record all the guitar parts. This is the first time that he used the guitar on a studio recording since 1964/65.

would've voted for more yoko stuff but i honestly don't know her albums really well and didn't really have the time to go through them. also ran out of time to listen to all of paul's stuff -- i listened to tug of war the day after i sent in my ballot and like it a ton more than i used to. with george i relied mostly on my fond memories of that blue "best of dark horse" cd i remember buying around the same time i got flaming pie. didn't hesitate much over my top choice -- lennon's vocal on that is almost absurdly gorgeous. one caveat is that i vaguely regret voting for woman which has some of lennon's dumbest lyrics, but the acoustic version really is nice.
