It's a great performance - I've no problems at all with the playing or the song, but I've always felt there was much better than this on All Things Must Pass.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 20:56 (eight years ago)

the amount of love for this one surprised me

Like, 'What Is Life' was the B-side and it feels like more of an A-side than the A-side

(x-post)

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 20:57 (eight years ago)

the prettiest melody of john's career. my #2

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 20:57 (eight years ago)

"what is life" hasn't placed yet

Making Plans For Sturgill (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 20:59 (eight years ago)

so there literally is much better on all things must pass, right here in this very poll xp

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 20:59 (eight years ago)

"oh yoko!" rules btw

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 20:59 (eight years ago)

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 20:59 (eight years ago)

gah this is another one where Keltner's on it and not Ringo

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:00 (eight years ago)

lol

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:00 (eight years ago)

(this is the problem with going by album, as opposed to individual song, credits)

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:00 (eight years ago)

I'm not a massive fan of 'Oh Yoko!' either - it's a nice enough tune, but there's better Lennon songs in this poll that have placed far lower.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:01 (eight years ago)

or is Ringo not on Imagine at all and it's all White and Keltner?

xp

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:01 (eight years ago)

"jealous guy" was my highest john song. it is... sublime

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:01 (eight years ago)

Same deal with 'My Sweet Lord', basically - there's been better Harrison songs that have placed far lower. 'Behind that Locked Door', for example.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:02 (eight years ago)

4. Maybe I'm Amazed - Paul McCartney (feat. Paul) (2014 points, 25 votes, 2 No. 1 votes))

all of you that voted this so high are... fucking high

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:02 (eight years ago)

i didn't vote for it at all but it's a good song ffs

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:03 (eight years ago)

'Jealous Guy' rules, but I still think it's a little too high.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:03 (eight years ago)

it feels a bit like a re-write of Hey Jude, another piano-pounding shout-y Paul anthem but it feels like half a song to me, like there's a part missing or he just ran out of melodic ideas or something. yech.

xp

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:04 (eight years ago)

'Maybe I'm Amazed' absolutely fucking rules, and if the Beatles had stayed together it's easy to see them tackling it and making a #1 hit out of it. Absolutely superb. Shakey's anti-McCartney bias has found a level beyond comical at this stage.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:05 (eight years ago)

I can't think of anything that could be added to it to make it any more perfect than it is. One of his greatest songs.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:06 (eight years ago)

I want to see everyone's full ballots, btw, and not just songs that didn't place! I don't mind scrolling through.

timellison, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:07 (eight years ago)

Feel like it would have actually benefited from a Spector production, unlike most other things.

29 facepalms, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:07 (eight years ago)

"Maybe I'm Amazed" at least has better lyrics than this nonsense
3. Jet - Wings (feat. Paul) (2055 points, 27 votes, 1 No. 1 vote))
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/84/Jet_-_Paul_McCartney_%26_Wings.jpg/220px-Jet_-_Paul_McCartney_%26_Wings.jpg

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:08 (eight years ago)

I love McCartney's solo in "Maybe": controlled fury.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:08 (eight years ago)

Maybe I'm Amazed was towards the bottom of my ballot, I like it but there's a lot of McCartney stuff I prefer.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:08 (eight years ago)

"jet" too low

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:08 (eight years ago)

i prefer not to judge the beatles by lyrics bc none of them are v good at it

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:09 (eight years ago)

Yeah, this absolutely deserves to be up here. 'Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five' is my absolute favourite from that album, though.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:09 (eight years ago)

JET!

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:11 (eight years ago)

one of the best verse melodies paul ever wrote

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:11 (eight years ago)

Oowoowoowoowoowoo!

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:11 (eight years ago)

it feels a bit like a re-write of Hey Jude, another piano-pounding shout-y Paul anthem but it feels like half a song to me, like there's a part missing or he just ran out of melodic ideas or something. yech.

I agree it sounds half finished, but it works in the context of a song about being awestruck and grasping at something that remains out of reach, I much prefer it to Hey Jude

soref, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:12 (eight years ago)

none of them are v good at it

They're all pretty good at it, sometimes great

timellison, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:13 (eight years ago)

Kinda surprised I was the only #1 vote for "Junk." I think it's hilarious that of all the Beatles, Paul was the one who wrote the most effortless/least cloying/genuinely moving song about materialism.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:13 (eight years ago)

yeah John and George are both pretty great lyricists imo. Paul could be, but most of the time he didn't bother.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:13 (eight years ago)

i think they're all p clumsy!

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:14 (eight years ago)

wow here i am with a radical beatle opinion

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:14 (eight years ago)

Jet was my #2 (I think), great melodies, hook after hook, I can't fault it.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:14 (eight years ago)

Brad otm

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:15 (eight years ago)

hey, even Greil Marcus liked "Jet"!

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:15 (eight years ago)

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:15 (eight years ago)

was surprised this was so high. must be "Goodfellas"

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:15 (eight years ago)

what is life was my #1 and i forgot it was even in Goodfellas

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:15 (eight years ago)

same!

Darin, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:16 (eight years ago)

It deserves to be this high!

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:16 (eight years ago)

i think i first heard "what is life" in... a commercial? anyway i wish it were no. 1

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:16 (eight years ago)

guess we all shine on

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:16 (eight years ago)

everything is perfect--the riff, the rhythm guitar, the soaring chorus, the wall of sound.

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 21:16 (eight years ago)
