flappy bird, Monday, 4 June 2018 17:47 (eight years ago)

"look at me" is so lovely

"run of the mill" too low, am i gonna say that for every george song

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Monday, 4 June 2018 17:48 (eight years ago)

Οὖτις, Monday, 4 June 2018 17:50 (eight years ago)

xp

Οὖτις, Monday, 4 June 2018 17:50 (eight years ago)

look at me is so sad and wonderful. i fucking love the quiet songs on JL/POB and i'm happy more are coming.

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Monday, 4 June 2018 17:54 (eight years ago)

i love run of the mill too, very dylanesque.

this poll solidified my belief that ATMP is the strongest single post-Beatles release, especially if you lop off the Apple Jam

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Monday, 4 June 2018 17:56 (eight years ago)

"Look at Me" is a White Album/India leftover - anyone know if there's a demo from '68 floating around? those wonderful Esher demos have "Junk" and "Child of Nature" and "Not Guilty," though iirc no George songs that ended up on ATMP (although it does have "Circles," which I know he recorded later. nice little song).

flappy bird, Monday, 4 June 2018 17:59 (eight years ago)

"Mrs. Lennon" > "Fame" on the Spotify is A+ segue.

WilliamC, Monday, 4 June 2018 18:03 (eight years ago)

Hi dere Beatle crew, “Run of the Mill” is my biggest *too low* so far. Had it at #6.

timellison, Monday, 4 June 2018 18:56 (eight years ago)

I’m guessing Crackerbox that low means little hope for This Song/Love Comes to Everyone/If You Believe/Faster/All Those Years Ago/Dream Away from you maniacs?

timellison, Monday, 4 June 2018 19:14 (eight years ago)

Love Comes to Everyone

hoping real hard for this one

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Monday, 4 June 2018 19:15 (eight years ago)

I fucking love it now.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 4 June 2018 19:16 (eight years ago)

forgot to mention in original post, 29 ballots received overall. So, pretty good turnout for one of these things.

Οὖτις, Monday, 4 June 2018 19:22 (eight years ago)

Οὖτις, Monday, 4 June 2018 19:24 (eight years ago)

well i'm glad "goodnight tonight" is ahead of "beautiful boy"

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Monday, 4 June 2018 19:25 (eight years ago)

i can't stand "beautiful boy" but i assume it's some lingering trauma from mr. holland's opus

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Monday, 4 June 2018 19:25 (eight years ago)

funny contrast there, both released very close to each other

well i'm glad "goodnight tonight" is ahead of "beautiful boy"

it's not, it's tied

Οὖτις, Monday, 4 June 2018 19:26 (eight years ago)

oh lol i'm really good at reading

*98. Long Haired Lady - Paul & Linda McCartney (feat. Paul) (342 points, 7 votes)*
🖼

One of my faves from RAM. There are so many great little offhand touches to this – the Fahey-esque “Bees are buh-zzing...” ramble, the long orchestral “Lonnnng hair.../Laaaaaady” sostenuto sections ... the incredibly silly Linda vocals (replete with the circular syntax “Do you love me like you know you ought to do?” we have come to expect from Paul). Only Marc Bolan made such utterly enjoyable nonsense.

Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 4 June 2018 19:31 (eight years ago)

Apparently, the Badfinger dudes play guitars on most of the ATMP tracks, too.

Darin, Monday, 4 June 2018 19:32 (eight years ago)

Todd Rundgren claims he rescued the shit out of “Day After Day” despite only getting an engineering credit on it. But it does have the signature George slide guitars so...

Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 4 June 2018 19:33 (eight years ago)

Rundgren says a lot of things tbg

Οὖτις, Monday, 4 June 2018 19:33 (eight years ago)

tbf

Οὖτις, Monday, 4 June 2018 19:34 (eight years ago)

yeah, George added a lot beyond the solo:

During their peak, Badfinger enjoyed a fabulous working relationship in the studio with The Beatles’ George Harrison. George took on a ‘big brother’ role of sorts with the band, especially in the studio during the recording of the Straight Up album, including the decision to shelve the first set of tapes from the recording sessions.

“George thought we sounded too much like a ‘beat’ group, and thought we could do better”, says guitarist Joey Molland. “He was really hands-on with the arrangements of songs like ‘Name Of The Game’ and ‘Suitcase’, including having me change the lyrics from “pusher, pusher” to “butcher, butcher”…because in those days, the radio wouldn’t have played anything with a even a slightly negative meaning related to drugs and the like.”

"Apple Scruffs" is almost too effortless for George.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 4 June 2018 19:46 (eight years ago)

I once spent a morning listening to "Secret Friend" on repeat

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 4 June 2018 19:46 (eight years ago)

yoooo “secret friend” made it!!!!

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Monday, 4 June 2018 19:46 (eight years ago)

Y'know, I might quibble about the order of these things, but I like-to-love every song that's placed so far.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 4 June 2018 19:53 (eight years ago)

YESSS @ 'Secret Friend'

bunny slopes, Monday, 4 June 2018 19:53 (eight years ago)

yeah, George added a lot beyond the solo

According to the Badfinger biography, Without You, George bailed in the middle of the album sessions, Rundgren added overdubs to "Day After Day" (and the other songs Harrison worked on) and also mixed the whole album but got no credit for the songs Harrison worked on. Reading between the lines, it doesn't take much of a leap to believe that George got the sole producer's credit on that song because it was chosen as the lead single by their label. Which was, you know, Apple.

Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 4 June 2018 19:56 (eight years ago)

'Day After Day' is a fucking beautiful song, and undoubtedly my favourite Badfinger song. It means a hell of a lot more to me than 'Without You' ...

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 4 June 2018 19:58 (eight years ago)

"I'm Losing You" too low, pretty sure that made my top ten, like an alienated 80's update of "Cold Turkey" with love replacing junk

sleeve, Monday, 4 June 2018 19:59 (eight years ago)

Damn, I meant to vote for Secret Friend and don't see it anywhere on my ballot. My favorite of things I discovered in poll listening.

WilliamC, Monday, 4 June 2018 20:04 (eight years ago)

i nearly put it in my top five and then figured i wouldn't have been able to bear it if it ended up in this poll's top ten, i guess i didn't have to worry

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Monday, 4 June 2018 20:05 (eight years ago)

voted for i'm losing you, certainly my favorite from double fantasy

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Monday, 4 June 2018 20:08 (eight years ago)

heart of the country is such a cute little song, i love it to death.

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Monday, 4 June 2018 20:08 (eight years ago)

it's def my favorite john song on double fantasy xp

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Monday, 4 June 2018 20:09 (eight years ago)

"goodnight tonight" is such a groove

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Monday, 4 June 2018 20:11 (eight years ago)

i didn't listen to any of the compilation albums so i've never heard goodnight tonight before. it's fucking wild. where does that guitar break come from??? one of those songs that explains why paul and stevie wonder were such good friends.

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Monday, 4 June 2018 20:14 (eight years ago)
